Hundreds attend Memorial Day parades across the Southern Tier
ENDICOTT, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – The largest post-COVID Memorial Day crowd in Endicott lined Washington Ave today to honor our nation's veterans.
Endicott held its annual Memorial Day parade on Washington Ave today, prior to hosting a ceremony at the Endicott War Memorial. The parade featured local veterans' groups, the Union-Endicott High School marching band, emergency services, civic organizations, dignitaries, and a host of other community participants.
After the precession, spectators gathered for a memorial service to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Chaplain Dennis Nota explains the importance of observing the federal holiday.
'Today, we stand to remember the most honorable amongst us, and we must continue to carry the burden of their sacrifice. Lest we lose sight of what true freedom is. Today is for remembering, to stand in honor of them, walk in their path of duty, remember the cost, and hold in your heart the cost of freedom,' said Chaplain Nota during his benediction.
The ceremony included a reading of the Gettysburg Address, a performance of Amazing Grace by the Edward P. Maloney Memorial Pipe Band, and the playing of TAPS by a Marine. Anny Hogan Camp, the Post Commander for VFW Post 1449, announced that the out-of-commission mailbox at the memorial is finding new use as a U.S. flag retirement box.
In addition to the holiday, the day marks the opening of the Villages carousel and pool at George W. Johnson Memorial Park.
Two hours later, the City of Binghamton hosted its Memorial Day Parade. The procession kicked off at the American Legion Post 80 on Main Street and continued to the Broome Country Courthouse.
A plethora of groups participated today, including the Binghamton Police and Fire Department, New York State Police, Broome County Sheriff's office, the Rumble Ponies, the Triple Cities Choppers, and perhaps the longest and flashiest of the day, the Twin Tiers Mustang Club. Broome County Clerk Joeseph Mihalko emceed the event, which included providing commentary and introducing the organizations to spectators.
As the story goes, Memorial Day was first observed in Waterloo, New York, in 1866. It was originally known as 'Decoration Day.' The holiday was created to honor those who gave their lives in the Civil War.
Binghamton adopted the tradition three years later, and in the years following, New York State was the first in the nation to make it a holiday in 1874.

Allegan County: Damage from storms is $2.2 million
ALLEGAN, Mich. (WOOD) — Allegan County's emergency management agency says its preliminary assessment has estimated some $2.2 million in damage caused by the severe storm that spawned two tornadoes in the county last week. NWS confirms 2 tornadoes in Allegan County on Thursday The county's Emergency Operations Center put together the preliminary assessment to submit to the office of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who may decide whether to issue a state emergency or disaster declaration. If issued, a state or federal disaster declaration would open up access to resources for recovery. The county already declared a local state of emergency. The EOC says it found $440,000 in direct expenses and damage to local government property that fall under Michigan State Police administrative rules for possible reimbursement. Allegan County community reacts to state of emergency The National Weather Service has confirmed two EF1 tornadoes touched down in Allegan County on the night of May 15. One was in the Martin area and the other was near the Sandy Pines campground. As of Wednesday, the EOC said it was not aware of any federal financial assistance for businesses or residents with property damage. It advised people to contact their insurance company. Additional resources may be available by calling 211 or through the American Red Cross, which is reachable at (733.27677). The tornado that marched through Martin sent trees crashing down, damaged some homes and knocked out power for days. 'Trees across the road,' street commissioner Rick Martin said. 'You couldn't go in or out of Martin at 11 p.m., 12 p.m.' He estimated cleanup costs at $250,000 — but said it will end up being less than that because neighbors, people who grew up there, friends and family have stepped up. Neighbor David Cheeseman said he saw it firsthand. 'In the middle of the night, neighbors were out helping clean things up,' Cheeseman said. 'The whole town's been that way. I've always liked it here, but now I love it.' Cheeseman planted a tree before he even closed on his Martin home 20 years ago. It has grown taller and taller as the years have passed and as he built a life there. Now, that special tree will soon come down after it was rocked by the tornado. 'It was 30 feet tall until Thursday night,' he said. Cheeseman said the governor declaring a disaster and offering access to more resources for recovery could be helpful. 'There are people that are going to need help for sure,' he said. While the street commissioner also said the extra help would be beneficial, he again praised his community. 'Any help that comes along, we're not going to turn it down by any means,' he said. 'But the community here has cleaned it up. You talk to anybody, it's family. It's just the way it is.' Crews are trying to finish cleanup before Monday's annual Memorial Day parade through Martin, which includes veterans, the high school band and tractors. It's a priority for the village to keep the parade on. 'It's a goal of the (department of public works), the village of Martin to have this to make sure life goes on,' the street commissioner said. Week of May 26 Evening News Ratings: All 3 Newscasts Struggle For Viewers Post-Memorial Day
The week after the Memorial Day holiday weekend proved slow for the evening newscasts as all three failed to make week-to-week gains in total viewers or the Adults 25-54 demo. NBC Nightly News was the only newscast not to record declines across the board for the week of May 26, as enough of an audience tuned in for Lester Holt's final broadcast as anchor to keep it from falling into the negative zone with total viewers. Holt has something else to smile about: His final week in the anchor's chair brought the demo gap between Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight with David Muir to just 53,000 viewers-its closest finish since January. Note: The weekly averages of ABC News, NBC News, and CBS News are based on four days (Tuesday-Friday). Monday's (05/26/25) broadcasts were retitled due to the Memorial Day holiday. These broadcasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, WNT averaged 7.042 million total viewers and 884,000 demo viewers for respective drops of -2% and -9% compared to the previous week. Looking at its performance alongside the same week in 2024 (the week beginning May 27), WNT was down -3% in total viewers and -14% in the demo. NBC Nightly News finished second in total viewers and the demo, averaging 5.720 million total viewers and 831,000 demo viewers. United Airlines Breaks Silence After Big Newark Airport Update
On June 2, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed a construction project on one of Newark Liberty International Airport's three main runways wrapped up nearly two weeks early. "The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has completed construction of Runway 4-Left/22-Right at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This runway will only be open for departures, while FAA flight crews ensure the runway's navigational aids are tested, calibrated and safe to use for arrivals. This is standard protocol to ensure a runway is safe to use for pilots and the flying public," the FAA said in a statement. "The airport will continue to operate with a maximum arrival rate of 28 aircraft an hour until those checks are complete. After that, the airport's maximum arrival rate will be 34 aircraft an hour." The announcement comes before the summer travel schedule becomes fully booked and is welcomed news for United Airlines, which operates nearly 70% of flights from Newark Liberty International Airport. "The airport's runway construction project is now complete. That means all runways at Newark are open, and we're confident that will lead to even better on-time performance for our airline," United said in a statement on June 2. The airline touted Newark Liberty International Airport's on-time rates over the busy holiday weekend that saw record travel numbers. "During Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest of the year, EWR beat New York LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International (JFK) in on‑time departures, and over the last two days of the weekend, EWR had the best on-time rates of any large airport in the country," the airline added.
