El Paso County asks community's help to stop illegal dumping of waste
(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — El Paso County is asking for the community's help to keep the county clean and beautiful by reducing illegal dumping of waste in areas such as ditches, rural roads, and open spaces.
According to El Paso County, the Division of Environmental Services offers free, year-round disposal opportunities for household waste and hazardous materials. These include weekly drop-off services and regular events like 'Clean Sweep,' which offers the chance to get rid of used tires, mattresses, and large electronics at no cost.
In 2024, Environmental Services helped divert a large amount of waste from landfills and illegal dumping sites, including:
128 tons of paper, cardboard, and aluminum
115 tons of consumer electronics
24 tons of porcelain
64 tons of flammable materials
77,000 gallons of household paint
16,000 gallons of used motor oil
5,000 gallons of antifreeze
54,000 aerosol cans
36,000 cubic yards of organic material
However, illegal dumping continues, and according to the county, it impacts private property, wildlife, and water systems. The county asks the community to help by:

Watch: Funeral services for Morrow County deputy fatally shot on Memorial Day
GALION, Ohio (WCMH) – A private ceremony at Marion Cemetery will conclude a week's worth of remembrance for a Morrow County deputy who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Deputy Daniel 'Weston' Sherrer will be laid to rest Wednesday in Marion. A public service to honor and celebrate Sherrer is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Northmor High School near Galion, with former sheriff and current pastor Steve Brenneman officiating. From there, it will proceed west on State Route 95 to Marion. The Sheriff's Office said its parking lot will be open to anyone would would like to view the procession and pay respects. Of those in attendance who spoke during the service was Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton, and Franklin County Deputy Sheriff Michael Brewer. On Memorial Day, Sherrer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic situation at a home on County Road 26 south of Marengo. Sherrer's body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office before a police escort brought him back to Mount Gilead last Wednesday during a 120-mile procession. Flags around Ohio have been flying at half staff under an order from Gov. Mike DeWine that will expire at sunset Wednesday. Sherrer became a Morrow County deputy in May 2021. The 2012 graduate of St. Charles Preparatory in Columbus was engaged to be married and is survived by his parents and other relatives. Brian Wilson, 53, has been charged in Sherrer's death. Armed robbery in Aurora Township leaves one injured, Kane County Sheriff's Office says
An armed robbery on Monday evening in Aurora Township left one person injured, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office. On Monday at around 6:36 p.m., the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an armed robbery with shots fired and an individual injured on the 800 block of Konen Avenue in Aurora Township, the news release said. According to a preliminary investigation, three people had approached a red Mitsubishi Outlander demanding its driver, a man from Aurora, give them his money and cell phone. The items were taken, and one of the individuals fired a weapon, injuring the Aurora man's right leg, according to the release. The man was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora with non-life-threatening injuries and later released, the news release said. The individuals involved ran north from the scene of the incident, according to the Sheriff's Office's news release. Police dogs and a drone were deployed to locate evidence and the people involved, officials said. Those who remained at the scene were detained for questioning, with one released with no charges and another being held for further investigation and questioning, the release stated. The Aurora Police Department and Aurora Fire Department assisted, and the county's Investigations Division and Evidence Division also responded to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing. The Kane County Sheriff's Office is encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about it to contact the county's Investigations Division at 630-444-1103.

2 women hospitalized, one with life-threatening injuries, after Marathon County house fire
HATLEY − Two women were hospitalized June 3 from injuries they received in an early morning house fire in Marathon County. At 12:04 a.m. June 3, a caller reported a house fire with someone possibly trapped inside in the 200 block of Kirkwood St. in the Marathon County village of Hatley, about 20 miles southeast of Wausau. Deputies from the Marathon County Sheriff's Office and the Hatley Fire Department and EMS arrived to find smoke coming from the single-family home, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. A 67-year-old woman told responders a 57-year-old woman was still inside the home. Deputies and firefighters successfully located the 57-year-old woman and removed her from the house. She was treated at the scene before being taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the Sheriff's Office. The 67-year-old woman also was treated at the scene for severe burns before being taken to UW Health University Hospital for further medical care, according to Sheriff's Office. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Ringle Fire Department, Birnamwood Fire and EMS, South Area Fire and Emergency Response District, Riverside EMS and Mountain Bay Police Department assisted at the scene.
