Red Sox' Alex Cora peppered with Roman Anthony call-up questions after 497-foot HR

NEW YORK — Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony belted a 497-foot grand slam Saturday, the longest home run tracked by Statcast this season (majors and minors).
On Sunday, manager Alex Cora was peppered with questions about when the game's No. 1 prospect will finally be called up to Boston.

'Good swing,' Cora said about the grand slam, smiling.
Is there a good chance that Anthony will be called up Monday when the Red Sox return to Fenway Park or sometime this week?
'I cannot answer the question,' Cora said before the rubber game of Boston's three-game series with New York here at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. 'My mind is with the 26 guys we have here. And we've got a chance to win a big league series against a rival that is playing good baseball. So we'll leave it at that. Try to win this game.'
The Red sox host the Rays on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They will then host the Yankees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday before heading out on a West Coast road trip.

Is it fair to say the team is talking often about the right time to call up Anthony?
'I think it's fair,' Cora said. 'Obviously there's always conversations not only about him but other players. I've been loud and clear about this whenever I get asked on Wednesdays on the radio thing (weekly WEEI appearance). He's actually doing an outstanding job. Let's be honest about that. It's just a matter of what we're gonna do, how we're gonna do it or when we're gonna do it. And I keep getting the questions and that's my best answer.
'But just watching not only the highlights and all that, I think watching what he's doing offensively, he's been impressive,' Cora added. 'And we knew this about him — the way he controls the strike zone, how hard he hits the ball."
The 21-year-old outfielder is batting .290 with a .421 on-base percentage, .495 slugging percentage, .916 OPS, 10 homers, nine doubles, two triples, 29 RBIs, 44 runs, 49 walks and 55 strikeouts in 57 games (261 plate appearances) for Triple-A Worcester.

'I still believe he's not the final product. Just like Marcelo (Mayer) and (Kristian) Campbell and Ceddanne (Rafaela) and Wily (Abreu),' Cora said. 'There's things that players need to do better and they will with more games and with experience. At what level? I don't know. Right now we saw KC here the first month of the season and we were like, 'Wow, this is great.' And now it's, 'Wow, we have to help him out.''
The 22-year-old Campbell, also a Top 5 prospect at the time of his major league debut on Opening Day, won American League Rookie of the Month for March/April, batting .301 with a .407 on-base percentage, .495 slugging percentage and .902 OPS in 29 games (123 plate appearances). But he has posted a .150/.213/.190/.403 with two extra-base hits in 28 games (108 plate appearances) since then.
'So understanding that it's not an easy process,' Cora added. 'It is not as easy of a transition as people think it is. But at the same time, man, he's a good player. We know that."
Cora then was asked if Anthony is one of the organization's best 26 players at this point.

'But he's not here, right?' Cora replied. 'And that's the way I see it. ... My job here is to manage the 26 that we have here and maximize the roster that we have. If I start thinking ahead or talking about something else, it doesn't do me any good. I got these guys here. I have to see how we're gonna use them. When are we gonna pinch hit? When are we gonna use the bullpen? And try to win the game."
Are questions about Anthony the most common he's receiving right now and does he hear them elsewhere besides reporters?
'Yeah. Yeah. Everybody's asking about that,' Cora said. 'There's a lot of questions about that and a lot of questions about how we have played during the season. ... And I think I've been very honest with both of them."
Cora understands the excitement surrounding Anthony.

'I think every market goes through this, right?' Cora said. 'I think Kansas City (with No. 19 prospect Jac Caglianone) went through it, right, the last two months or whatever it was. I bet there's other teams that have good players in the minor leagues and their fan base and people are gonna talk about it. So that's part of the job.'

Yankees scratch across late run to edge Royals 1-0, complete season sweep

Pablo Reyes stumbled, stopped and still scrambled home safely on a wild play in the eighth inning, taking advantage of a throwing error by reliever Lucas Erceg to give the New York Yankees a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. New York completed a three-game sweep to finish 6-0 against the Royals this season after eliminating them 3-1 in their best-of-five playoff series last October. Backed by some brilliant defense, Will Warren and four relievers combined on a five-hitter as the AL East-leading Yankees (42-25) moved a season-high 17 games over .500. They have the best road record in the majors at 21-13. Mark Leiter Jr. (4-3) got one out for the win, and Devin Williams earned his ninth save with a perfect ninth. He threw a called third strike past Jac Caglianone to end it, freezing the touted rookie with a full-count fastball. The game was interrupted by rain for 28 minutes in the top of the sixth. With two on and two outs in the eighth, Paul Goldschmidt lined a single off the glove of leaping first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino. He tracked down the ball behind him and threw to Erceg (1-2) covering first, but Goldschmidt beat the play. Reyes lost his balance coming around third, changed direction twice and then slid home safely when Erceg bounced his throw to the plate. Both starters pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Seth Lugo allowed just two hits, while Warren permitted four. Pasquantino extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games and his on-base streak to a career-best 27 games. New York rested Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Austin Wells, who were a combined 7 for 23 with three homers and 10 RBIs in the first two games of the series. Key moments The Royals squandered two excellent chances to take their first lead of the series. In the second inning, they had runners on first and second with nobody out. In the fifth, they had a runner at third with one out. Key stat New York swept a season series from the Royals for the third time in their 57-year history. ... The Yankees have won 19 of the past 20 series between the teams. Up next Yankees LHP Ryan Yarbrough (3-1, 4.17 ERA) faces Boston LHP Garrett Crochet (6-4, 2.35) in the opener of a three-game series Friday night at Fenway Park. New York City FC scores 3 goals in 5 minutes to rout Atlanta United 4-0

Hannes Wolf scored two goals for the second straight game, Maxi Moralez had a goal and an assist, and New York City FC beat Atlanta United 4-0 on Thursday night. New York City (8-6-4) scored three goals in a five-minute span for the first time in club history. Mounsef Bakrar, moments after sending a breakaway shot off of Brad Guzan, had a one-touch finish at the penalty spot in the 55th for a 2-0 lead. Wolf slotted home a shot from a difficult angle in the 57th and he added a goal two minutes later on a one-on-one opportunity with Guzan, who got a touch on it before it rolled into the back of the net. Atlanta (4-9-5) has struggled on the road, registering just one draw and five defeats in its last five away matches. Atlanta was looking for its first road win over NYCFC in their regular-season history. Tomás Romero got his first MLS start in goal for NYCFC — with several first-team players away on international duty. Ronny Deila, who managed NYCFC from 2020 to '22, faced his former team on the road for the first time.
