Block-busted: Memphis man pleads guilty to leaking movies online before release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man is set to be sentenced later this summer for stealing pre-released DVD copies of some blockbuster movies and leaking them online.
37-year-old Steven Hale pleaded guilty to criminal copyright infringement. The Department of Justice says he was working for company in Memphis that manufactured and distributed DVDs and Blu-rays.
From 2021 to 2022, he reportedly stole hundreds of pre-release discs that were only for commercial distribution. They included several big names like 'Dune,' 'Black Widow' and 'Godzilla vs Kong.'
'Spider-Man: No Way Home' was copied before the release date, put online, and was downloaded tens of millions of times, prosecutors said, resulting in tens of millions of dollars in losses by the copyright owner, prosecutors said.
String of store thefts led to chase in South Memphis; two in custody
Hale agreed to make full restitution and return approximately 1,160 stolen DVDs and Blu-rays.
Sentencing is set for August 29.

Police use tracking device to help apprehend Hamden carjacking suspects
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — New Haven police say they used a tracking device to help apprehend three people accused of fleeing from a carjacking in Hamden Thursday night. Johnny Jones, 20; Malachi Macfarlane, 18; and a 17-year-old boy were all charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, weapon in a motor vehicle, and interfering with police. New Haven man arrested for alleged handgun threat Jones- the driver- was also charged with engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving, weapon in a motor vehicle and carrying a pistol without a permit. Police said it was around 9:19 p.m. when they were notified by Hamden police of a carjacking that had just happened. The NHPD Real Time Crime Center then located the vehicle in the area of Goffe Street, by Webster Street. Officers used spike strips and Star Chase- a GPS tracking device- on the vehicle, which they said ended up crashing into a fence on North Place in West Haven. A .40 caliber handgun was located in the vehicle during the arrests, police said. 'This is great police work. From Hamden notifying us of a carjacking, then our use of technology to located the vehicle, safely deflate its tires and track it to West Haven where we recovered the suspects and took a gun off the streets,' New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said. 'I can't speak highly enough about how our officers responded.' Macfarlane and Jones were held on $500,000 and $300,000 bonds respectively and the juvenile was released to his guardian. Man charged for reckless driving with 6-year-old in the vehicle in Southington
SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — A man is facing charges for reckless driving with a 6-year-old in the car in Southington on Thursday, police said. Stephen Buckler, 43, of Bristol was charged with risk of injury to child, reckless endangerment in the first degree, disobeying signal of an officer, evading responsibility and failure to drive in proper lane. Police use tracking device to help apprehend Hamden carjacking suspects Police said around 8:10 p.m., authorities were working a traffic detail at the Southington High School graduation ceremonies. Police saw a white Chevy Trailblazer drive over the grassy median in the High School parking lot, cross the sidewalk, and enter Flanders Street, passing a row of stopped vehicles. Authorities said the vehicle continued traveling towards police as they asked the driver of the white Chevy Trailblazer to stop. The vehicle allegedly began to speed as it headed towards police and 'abruptly' turned right on Annelise Avenue, where it drove over a curb, striking a fence. Police said it caused other private property damage before fleeing the area northbound. According to police, the officers in the roadway had to jump out of the way of the moving vehicle.
