She released most of her best-known songs through TK Records, a regional powerhouse founded by Henry Stone that counted other proto-disco acts, including Betty Wright and KC and the Sunshine Band, among its stable.
She began performing with George McCrae as a duo. They recorded their own albums, sang backup on others, and carved a presence for themselves in the clubs of South Florida.

They also performed separately, and Gwen McCrae's repertoire was not limited to dance songs. On her own, she was the first person to release a version of the ballad 'You Were Always on My Mind,' in 1972; sometimes shortened to 'Always on My Mind,' it was later recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, and the Pet Shop Boys.

"She was an amazing talent," Harry Wayne Casey, a songwriter at TK Records and the lead singer of KC and the Sunshine Band, said in an interview. "She had one of the most soulful voices I've ever heard."
After the worldwide success of George McCrae's signature hit, "Rock Your Baby," in 1974, Gwen McCrae recorded her own hit the next year: "Rockin' Chair," a sensual, swinging tune that topped the Billboard R&B chart and reached No. 9 on the Hot 100 pop chart.
There was some dispute over how the two came to record their respective songs. Gwen McCrae later said that Casey and Richard Finch had written 'Rock Your Baby' for her, but that she had given it to her husband to help his career — and then asked for her own hit song once his went big.

But George McCrae had a different spin: Their marriage was on the rocks, he said, and she had given him "Rock Your Baby" in a bid to keep them together.
Regardless, their marriage did not last. They divorced a year later.
After TK Records closed in 1981, she moved to New York City and signed with Atlantic, where she had a minor hit with "Funky Sensation" in 1981 and recorded two albums.
Although her career had begun to slow in the postdisco era, she found a new fan base in Europe, especially in Britain, where the discovery of classic American soul, sometimes called 'rare groove,' was underway in the 1980s.
DJs and hip-hop artists sampled her songs. She became known as the 'queen of rare groove' across Britain and Europe.
"When I went overseas, I didn't know people loved me so much. They really loved my old stuff," she said in a 1996 interview with a Swedish journalist. "Yeah, I was shocked!"
Gwendolyn Patricia Mosley was born Dec. 21, 1943, in Pensacola, Fla. Her father, Aaron, died when she was young, and she was raised by her mother, Winnie (Lee) Mosley.
She began singing gospel songs in church and aspired to make religious singing her career. Even later in her career, when she was belting out disco tracks filled with double entendres, she found it uncomfortable to be too explicit.
"I had the worst time singing 'Damn Right It's Good,'" she said in the 1996 interview, referring to a song she released in 1976. "I sang like 'Darn right it's good, you better knock on wood'; I could not sing 'Damn right it's good.' And I still can hardly say it. It ain't me!"

She met George McCrae in 1963, when he was stationed in Pensacola with the Navy. They married soon after, and they began singing together once he left the service in 1967.
She leaves two daughters from her marriage to McCrae: Sophia and Leah; a daughter from a previous relationship, Wanda; a son from a later relationship, Alex; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Although 'Funky Sensation' was her last hit in the United States, Ms. McCrae continued to make music and to draw a dedicated following for her live performances, both at home and in Europe.
In 2004, she released a gospel album, "I'm Not Worried." Two years later, she worked once more with Stone, recording an album of standards from the TK Records catalog, "Gwen McCrae Sings TK."
Although she claimed Florida as her primary residence, she toured Europe extensively. She stopped in 2012, when a stroke after a concert in England left her paralyzed on the left side of her body.

Legendary '80s Rocker, 75, Stuns Fans With 'Smoking Hot' Shirtless Performance

Legendary '80s Rocker, 75, Stuns Fans With 'Smoking Hot' Shirtless Performance originally appeared on Parade. When we picture folks at age 75, we probably have an unfair stereotypical perception of how they'll look, act and move. Iconic musician and actor Rick Springfield will absolutely dismantle every preconceived notion you have about this age, and a fan's latest video can prove it. In the video, Springfield appears ageless in both appearance and sound, rocking out to the hit that catapulted him to fame in 1981 "Jessie's Girl." The star previously told Yahoo!Life last year he credits his ageless appearance to a rigorously healthy lifestyle. Cutting back on alcohol and working out every day are two key moves in his quest to remain youthful, along with a very healthy diet.'The hardest thing is looking in the mirror and going, 'Wow, that wasn't there when I was in my 30s…' and going, 'I look like my mom,'" he said of aging. 'So I never think of myself as a real 75.' Neither do his fans."Guys living his [third] life," commented one fan. "Saw him when he was 69. Looks just as good!" "Um, what is happening here? Where did he find the fountain of youth," asked another. The Australian musician and actor hit number one for two weeks in the U.S. on the Hot 100 singles chart after "Jessie's Girl" and received a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance in 1981. While new music isn't confirmed to be on the horizon, Springfield is currently playing shows and making appearances. All in all, we bet "Jessie's Girl" has some major regrets. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Legendary '80s Rocker, 75, Stuns Fans With 'Smoking Hot' Shirtless Performance first appeared on Parade on Jun 9, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 9, 2025, where it first appeared.

Sabrina Carpenter's Hit Returns — Right Before She Scores A New Smash

Next week, Sabrina Carpenter will likely score a brand new smash on the Hot 100 with her latest single, "Manchild." The tune, which dropped on June 5, is headed for a lofty debut across a number of Billboard rankings — and it may even become the superstar's next top 10 hit. Ahead of what will likely be an exciting launch, Carpenter's previous focus track returns to the competitive tally and joins her most familiar tune as the singer-songwriter moves on to the next. Carpenter claims a pair of Hot 100 wins this frame in the United States as "Busy Woman" returns to the list of the most consumed songs in America, coming in at No. 97. The tune, which was pushed as the single from the deluxe edition of Carpenter's Short n' Sweet album, earns its fourteenth stay on the tally as it breaks back in. Somewhat surprisingly — despite a fairly long run on the Hot 100 for a pop tune — "Busy Woman" has only risen as high as No. 27 during its lifespan, and it seems unlikely that it will climb any higher. "Busy Woman" was Carpenter's most recent single before "Manchild," but it's her breakout smash that sits highest this time around. "Espresso" pushes from No. 24 to No. 21 as American audiences remain energized by the caffeinated cut. Each time the track holds on and finds space, it extends its lead as the recently-named Grammy winner's longest-running success on the Hot 100. The cut has now spent 59 weeks somewhere on the ranking — more than 20 stints longer than "Please Please Please," her second-longest-charting win. Radio may be largely helping "Busy Woman" in its return to the Hot 100. While the track doesn't appear on any sales- or streaming-focused rosters published by Billboard, it does chart on both the Pop Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay rankings. In fact, the tune soars to new highs on both lists, dancing to No. 21 on the former and No. 37 on the latter in just its second stay.

Billie Eilish's Only No. 1 Hit Demoted Again Within Her Discography

For much of her career, Billie Eilish has been known as the 'bad guy,' thanks to her breakout hit of the same name, which is the tune that propelled her to global superstardom. More than half a decade later, 'Bad Guy' is no longer the sturdiest in her catalog when it comes to chart longevity. As of this frame, another tune has passed it on the most important songs ranking in America. 'Wildflower,' Eilish's latest single from her most recent album Hit Me Hard and Soft, climbs on this week's Hot 100, pushing from No. 58 to No. 44. This marks its fiftieth frame on the ranking of the most consumed songs in America. Now that 'Wildflower' has lived on the Hot 100 for 50 weeks, it breaks its tie with 'Bad Guy' and officially becomes Eilish's second-longest-charting track ever. 'Bad Guy' remained on the tally for 49 periods between April and August of 2019. While it has now been demoted to third place on the list of her longest-running wins on the Hot 100, it is still her sole No. 1. Meanwhile, 'Birds of a Feather' continues to extend its lead as Eilish's track with the most time spent on the Hot 100. The biggest single from Hit Me Hard and Soft inches closer to the top 10, lifting four spaces to No. 13 after previously topping out at No. 2. It does so as it reaches 54 weeks on the roster, and it seems likely to continue adding to that total in the coming frames. 'Wildflower' is performing so well in the U.S. thanks to a healthy mix of streaming activity and radio attention. The track appears on multiple streaming-only tallies, and it currently sits at No. 6 on both the Rock Streaming Songs and Alternative Streaming Songs rankings. The tune is also rising at top 40 radio, and this time around it manages to climb to a new all-time high of No. 15 on the Pop Airplay chart.
