Archaeologists uncover extraordinary 2,000-year-old Roman basilica beneath London office

Euronews14-02-2025

Archaeologists have made an extraordinary discovery under an office block in London: the remains of the city's first Roman basilica.
It's been described as one of the most significant archaeological finds in the capital in recent years.
Dating back nearly 2,000 years to the late 70s or early 80s AD, the basilica was part of the Roman forum - Londinium's administrative and social hub.
"The significance of this site is that the Roman basilica really was the commercial, social, and economic hub of London," explains Andrew Henderson-Schwartz, the head of public impact at MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology), in a chat with Euronews Culture.
"It's where you would go to do big business decisions and big business deals. It's where you would go to have disputes resolved by a magistrate. It's where you'd go to have discussions about the kind of decisions that could affect the changes that were happening to both Roman London and and wider Roman Britain."
What's been uncovered so far are the remarkably intact foundations of a two-storey building, nearly the size of an Olympic swimming pool.
Constructed between 78 and 84 A.D., the structure was erected just a few decades after Roman troops first invaded Britain and about 20 years after the destruction of Londinium by the forces of the Celtic warrior queen Boudicca.
As well as the walls, excavations have also revealed several artefacts, including a roof tile stamped with the mark of an official from the ancient city.
The developer, Hertshten Properties, which owns the site and holds planning permission for a new office tower, has committed to incorporating the ancient remains into the building's design and showcasing them in a public visitor centre.
The display is expected to feature a glass floor, allowing visitors to view the basilica's walls below, and will also include space for food stalls and markets.
"I think it's important to preserve the past. Obviously, London is a rapidly developing city, and it's great that we're growing so quickly with so much development happening. But having these tangible links to the past helps us remember where we came from and gives us a sense of connection to those who came before us," says Henderson-Schwartz.
With further excavations on the horizon, the archaeological team hopes to answer several questions, such as why the original forum was only used for 20 years before being replaced by a much larger one, which continued to serve the city until the collapse of Roman rule three centuries later.

Los Angeles Grand Slam Track meeting cancelled: sources

The fourth and final stop on the new circuit had been due to take place at Los Angeles' Drake Stadium from June 28-29. However sources with knowledge of the situation told AFP Thursday that the meeting had now been scrapped due to "poor economics". An official announcement on the meeting's cancellation is expected later Thursday. Sources said Johnson was due to hold a video call with athletes and their representatives following Thursday's Diamond League meeting in Oslo to confirm the move. Reports in the United States and Britain said the cancellation was made due to the failure to secure adequate sponsorship and broadcast revenue for the league, which was launched in Kingston, Jamaica in April. Ticket sales for the Los Angeles event had also been sluggish, reports said, with Britain's The Times saying the decision to cancel would save organisers around $3 million in prize money and travel expenses. The cancellation is a stinging blow to Johnson's hopes of revolutionising athletics through the circuit, which was launched as part of an attempt to reinvigorate interest in the sport after years of decline. Johnson's stated goal of Grand Slam Track was to produce a more concentrated format which promised more head-to-head races between the world's best athletes. However while the series was able to recruit stars such as US Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas and 400m hurdles icon Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, it failed to recruit a slew of top sprinting talent including the reigning men's and women's 100m champions Noah Lyles and Julien Alfred. The series offered athletes prize money of up to $100,000 for their overall standings after participating in two races at each meet. However while athletes expressed enthusiasm for the series, there were clear signs it had failed to capture the imagination of fans. Swathes of empty seats were seen at the opening meeting in Kingston, while for the third meeting in Philadelphia, the program was cut from three days to two days. US Olympic 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin had been among the athletes expressing scepticism over Grand Slam Track's chances of success. "I look at it as a business," Benjamin said before the opening meeting in April. "At the end of the day, if there's no ROI (return on investment), then you have a failed business model. And it's like, how long could you be sustainable? "They're not going to make any money this year, they're not going to make any money next year." Johnson however brushed off those concerns, adamant that the series would generate interest once launched. "I've started several successful businesses in my life and not a single one was profitable in year one," Johnson said. "That's not how you build businesses.

Young stars sparkle as Thunder and Pacers seek first NBA titles

Oklahoma City, fancied by oddsmakers after an NBA-high 68 regular-season wins, will host game one in the best-of-seven championship series. Both teams are fast-paced squads with young star point guards, 26-year-old NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the Thunder and Indiana's 25-year-old Tyrese Haliburton. The Pacers seek the first NBA crown in their 58-year history while the Thunder, who moved from Seattle in 2008, took the franchise's only title as the SuperSonics in 1979. "It's a new blueprint for the league," Pacers center Myles Turner said. "The years of the superteams and stacking, it's not as effective as it once was. "The new trend now is kind of what we're doing. OKC does the same thing. Young guys, get out and run, defend and use the power of friendship." Oklahoma City's only prior NBA Finals appearance was in 2012, when Kevin Durant, James Harden and Russell Westbrook lost to LeBron James-led Miami. Indiana's only prior trip to the NBA Finals came in 2000, a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, but the Pacers also won three 1970s titles in the American Basketball Association, which sent four teams into the NBA in 1976. Gilgeous-Alexander could become the first league scoring champion to win an NBA title in the same season since 2000, when Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers past the Pacers. "SGA" averaged 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocked shots a game in leading the Thunder to the NBA's best regular-season record at 68-14. With forwards Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, Gilgeous-Alexander has formed a formidable trio. The Thunder swept Memphis in the first round of the playoffs, outlasted Nikola Jokic-powered Denver in seven games then dispatched Minnesota in five. The Pacers went 50-32 behind 20.2 points and 6.9 rebounds a game from Pascal Siakam and 18.6 points, 9.2 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals a game by Haliburton, who helped the USA win Paris Olympic gold last year. "What makes him very good is that he's very confident," Williams said of Haliburton. "It makes him a very dangerous individual." Indiana eliminated Milwaukee and Cleveland in five games each and took out New York in six. Oklahoma City beat Indiana twice in the regular season with Gilgeous-Alexander averaging 39 points, eight assists and seven rebounds while Haliburton struggled, averaging 11 points, three rebounds and 5.5 assists. The Thunder dominate defensively, leading the playoffs with 18 turnovers forced and 10.8 steals a game plus a 42.6% opponent shooting percentage from the floor. The Pacers, however, average 117.4 points a game in the playoffs and own the top shooting percentage overall at 49.7% and from three-point range at 40.1%. 'Be who we are' Each team helped build their current lineup by trading NBA star Paul George. The Pacers sent him to the Thunder in 2017 for players that were later traded for Haliburton and draft picks that landed Andrew Nembhard and Ben Sheppard. "This franchise took a chance on me, saw something that other people didn't see in me," Haliburton said. The Thunder traded George to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2019 in a deal that landed Gilgeous-Alexander and a draft pick that was used on Williams. Oklahoma City has a player who won an NBA title in Alex Caruso, who helped the Lakers win the 2020 crown, while the Pacers boast Siakam from Toronto's 2019 title run. "You don't have to do anything special," Caruso said of winning an NBA crown. "You just have to be who we are. That has worked for us throughout this whole year."

US-based group completes Rangers takeover

The consortium of investors, led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, purchased a majority 51 percent stake in the Glasgow team. Funding for the close-season signings will come in the form of a new share issue, subject to shareholder approval at a general meeting on June 23. Healthcare executive Cavenagh is Rangers' new chairman, while Paraag Marathe, who is chairman of Premier League side Leeds United and the president of 49ers Enterprises, becomes the vice-chairman. Rangers said the Scottish Football Association approved the deal late on Thursday night after the club sought consent over dual ownership issues. Sports investment firm 49ers Enterprises also owns a majority stake in Leeds, who won promotion from the Championship this season. The deal will allow Rangers to step up their recruitment of a new manager. Real Madrid's departing assistant manager Davide Ancelotti and former Southampton boss Russell Martin are among the leading contenders for the job following the departure of interim boss Barry Ferguson. "We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by the Rangers board, shareholders, staff, and supporters," Cavenagh said. "This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches. "We know that the true way to honour the club's heritage will be to drive performance. "Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs - at the top." Rangers finished second in the Scottish Premier League this season, trailing 17 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic, and failed to win a trophy. Rangers haven't won the Scottish title since 2021, with Celtic lifting the trophy 13 times in the last 14 seasons. Ending Celtic's dominance will be the top priority for Rangers' new owners. © 2025 AFP
