‘Vanguard,' About Swedish Mogul Jan Stenbeck, Sells to Multiple Territories: ‘Him and Trump Are Both Extremely Divisive Figures' (EXCLUSIVE)

'Vanguard,' a drama about Swedish mogul Jan Stenbeck, has sold to TG4 (Ireland), ERR (Estonia), Viaplay SVOD on Amazon Prime (U.S., U.K., Poland), Viaplay Select on Cindie (LatAm), Prima+ (Czech Republic) and Vodafone (Greece), Variety has found out exclusively. FLX's Lejla Bešic produced the five-episode show – about to premiere at Monte Carlo TV Festival – for SVT in collaboration with the N8 alliance, while Viaplay Content Distribution handles international sales. More from Variety Jason Priestley on Why 'BH90210' Got Canceled, and Why He Would Act in 'Euphoria' If He Were a Young Star 'The Tourist,' Starring Jamie Dornan, Wins Best Series at Monte-Carlo Television Festival 'The Reunion' Star Ioan Gruffudd, Director Bill Eagles, Producer Sydney Gallonde on Remaining Faithful to Guillaume Musso's Novel The story, based on Per Andersson's biography 'Stenbeck: A Biography of a Successful Businessman,' kicks off with Stenbeck (played by Jakob Oftebro, known for 'Black Crab' and 'Hamilton') returning to the family he has spent his whole life rejecting. Just like … Michael Corleone. 'I wanted to do a homage to 'The Godfather,'' laughed director Goran Kapetanović. He's happy, working in New York and romancing an American socialite. But when tragedy strikes, twice, he needs to lead his family's industrial group. The king is dead. Long live the king. 'He was this prince, living in the U.S., and then the king asked him to go back to Sweden. But he just painted the whole castle pink,' said Kapetanović. Stenbeck had ideas of his own, ultimately breaking Sweden's telephone monopoly and launching Scandinavia's first commercial channel TV3. 'He was a gambler – that's how he lived his life. Later, he was addicted to food and alcohol and just destroyed himself. It's quite tragic, this portrait of a strong, powerful man who deals with so many things but remains oblivious to his family, for example.' It was the complicated family dynamic that attracted Alex Haridi. He wrote the script with Lotta Erikson and Helene Lindholm. 'I also have a very, very complicated relationship with my sister. When I started reading about Jan, that part opened my eyes: it's like watching Greek gods, fighting and having all these conflicts, and everything they do trickles down to ordinary people. I can see things in my own life that are a direct result of these siblings not getting along back in the early 80s.' He added: 'He really impacted our lives in Sweden, and he wasn't even meant to run the company! He was the youngest of four children. Then he steps in and becomes this enormous figure. I don't want to put an equal sign between him and Trump, but they are both extremely divisive figures. People call him the savior or the devil. In a sense, he's both. And neither.' Their lead actor had to capture this duality, too. 'Jan can be likeable. There's something mystical about him and a little bit childish. I've been looking all over Sweden, then I turned to Norway and the only guy who could speak all three Scandinavian languages was Jakob,' recalled Kapetanović. 'It was a bit risky because of the accent, but he did a Swedish show before. Now, we have a Norwegian guy playing one of the most important Swedish guys. I'm so proud of it.' Haridi noted: 'I just remember watching Jakob during the casting process. He was so charming, so warm and wonderful. And then there was this point when everything shifts. All of a sudden, it felt icky. He really carries the show.' Oftebro is joined by Zoe Boyle, Malin Crepin, Julia Marko Nord, Iggy Malmborg and Niklas Engdahl. While 'Vanguard' had to be 'very, very factually correct,' admitted Haridi, the actual family wasn't involved. 'We talked to lots of people around the family and around the company. The family itself was informed the series was being written and made, but they didn't want to participate.' Instead, the team focused on making the story appealing to younger viewers – Stenbeck passed away in 2002 – and finding a way to combine his personal struggles with massive changes in the media landscape he was very much a part of. 'In the 1970s, there were educational programs everywhere, and then people realized they could make money. They just said: 'We want to give people what they want.' That's basically what Steinbeck said, too: 'We'll give Swedish people what they want to see.' There's a beautiful scene in the fourth episode when he's talking to these Italian Berlusconi types [Berlusconi was a founder of Mediaset]. That's why we're getting so many trashy TV shows these days.' 'There's a lot of business talk [in the show], so we had to balance it out, making sure there's always something emotional going on underneath,' added Haridi. 'Even if you don't understand exactly what they're talking about in business terms, there's a personal story you can follow. Having these two layers in every scene was the right way to do it.' 'At the end, it really comes down to family, to all of them competing with each other,' observed Kapetanović. 'You win some, you lose some and at the end you wonder: Was it worth it or not?' Which Cast Members Are Not Returning for ‘And Just Like That' Season 3? Who's Not Coming Back

And Just Like That... returns for season 3 minus several key cast members who have been with the show since the first episode. Life & Style reveals which costars aren't coming back and the reasons behind their departures. Sara Ramirez is not coming back to the show as nonbinary comedian and podcaster Che Diaz, even though they have been with the show since season 1. Similarly, another two-season regular, Karen Pittman, won't be back to reprise her role of law professor Nya Wallace. The Grey's Anatomy alum and showrunner Michael Patrick King "felt that that character had run its course," AJLT star and Sex and the City alum Cynthia Nixon told Variety in May 2024. Cynthia's Miranda Hobbes fell for Che in season 1, causing her to split from husband Steve Brady, played by David Eigenberg. Che and Miranda's romance blossomed throughout the season as Miranda explored her sexuality. Season 2 saw Che suffer a major career downturn after their comedy pilot didn't get picked up. They went back to working in a veterinarian's office and the podcast they cohosted with Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw was cancelled after the studio was shut down. Che's romance with Miranda also came to an end, after the intensity of being involved so deeply in each other's lives took a toll. That left Sara without much to do on the show, as their character's ties to both Carrie and Miranda were no longer there going into the third season. 'One of the things that it meant was that Miranda was single again, and that the tensions between Miranda and Che, and also Miranda and Steve, had been quelled and quieted," Cynthia told E! News on May 28, 2025, about her character finally being free of any partner heading into season 3 of AJLT. "Just speaking for Miranda, it meant that she was setting out on this new dating world, having decided she wanted to date women and nonbinary people, but not really quite knowing how to go about that," the New York native added. Karen's busy schedule didn't have room for her to return as Miranda's former law professor and close pal, as she was shooting Apple TV+'s The Morning Show season 4 and the Netflix's series Forever during AJLT's season 3 production. 'It has been a joy to have Karen Pittman play the smart and stunning Professor Nya Wallace on the first two seasons of And Just Like That. As we have thoroughly enjoyed working with this dynamic actress, so too have others," a spokesperson for HBO told multiple outlets on March 22, 2024. They noted that 'it has become apparent that filming three shows at once isn't possible.' 'Due to the production realities, we are disappointed to announce that scheduling conflicts will not allow us to continue with this character as part of season 3 of And Just Like That. Karen and Nya will be missed, and her Max family and fans will all be cheering her on in her other endeavors," the streaming service added. The character of Nya had been left at somewhat of a dead end after season 2. Miranda had long left her brief return to college in the professor's classes to take a job as a human rights lawyer, so the pair only had social interactions. Nya's marriage broke down after she and her husband were unable to come to a decision about children, and season 2 saw the character exploring dating life while somewhat adrift from the rest of the AJLT cast. Kim Cattrall's cameo in the AJLT season 2 finale was a one and done. She thrilled Sex and the City fans by reprising Samantha Jones one last time in the episode that aired on August 24, 2023. Samantha called Sarah Jessica's Carrie Bradshaw to let her know her flight from London was running late and she was going to miss the former sex columnist's goodbye dinner at her longtime New York City apartment. The characters had a brief but pleasant chat after having several text exchanges during season 1 of the SATC revival. Kim shot her scene separately and was never face to face with SJP or other cast members. The Glamorous star had gone on the record numerous times that she was done playing Samantha for good when SJP tried to get a third SATC movie off the ground in 2017. The How I Met Your Father star said she wasn't asked back by AJLT executive producer and star Sarah to take part in the reboot, which the Hocus Pocus star confirmed.

Is Che in ‘And Just Like That' Season 3? Sara Ramirez's Character's Fate After Dramatic Season 2

Miranda Hobbes experienced both love and heartbreak in the Sex and the City spinoff, And Just Like That…, and her relationship with Che Diaz certainly had its highs and lows. Is Sara Ramirez's character in season 3 of the show? It was reported by multiple outlets in February 2024 that Sara's character was not returning for season 3 of And Just Like That… after two seasons on the show. Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda, spoke out on Che's exit from the show one year ahead of the season 3 premiere in May 2025. "I think for Miranda, Miranda and Che were really pretty done," Cynthia told Entertainment Weekly in May 2024. "I think that Miranda and Che had kind of run the gamut of what they were going to be to each other." Cynthia echoed a similar stance while speaking with Variety that same month. 'I do feel like our show always works best when people are dating,' she said. 'They created such an amazing character — such a controversial character, but such an amazing character,' she said, referring to the character of Che. 'I think they felt, and Michael Patrick [King] felt, that that character had run its course. They came in and shook everything up, and then the arc was completed.' The Emmy winner said that she understood that a lot of people were upset with the arc of Steve's character, Miranda's husband, whom she left and got back together with in the first Sex and the City film. In And Just Like That… their relationship came crumbling apart when Miranda met Che and began an affair. While speaking with Grazia in May 2025, Cynthia said that the ''poor Steve' narrative doesn't really bother me. Our show always killed its darlings. If we're just gonna play it safe and nice, why are you watching?' Cynthia revealed that she suggested Sara, who uses they/them pronouns, for the role of Che. 'I love Che, I love Sara. It's hard to know what people would have made of Che if Che hadn't ostensibly broken up Steve and Miranda,' she noted. 'But I don't want a show in which everybody is behaving well all the time. A feminist show doesn't show women being perfect.' Miranda and Che ended up breaking up after their toxic romance hit its breaking point in season 2 of And Just Like That… Their romance was plagued by bickering and tension as Che's TV pilot ended up failing. 'I think for Che, there's an incremental ego death process that is occurring over time, with the failure of the pilot, with all of the projections that they internalized during that process, with all the questioning they've been doing,' Sara told TVLine in July 2023. 'I don't think they have the capacity to keep the wheels on the car any longer. They don't have the capacity to continue this fantasy of a bubble of love and friendship and affirmation.' Cynthia revealed that in season 3, Miranda would be embracing her single era. 'Both the old show and the new show are more fun when people are dating, so Miranda will be dating,' she said.
