How is South India succeeding
Javed Akhtar on working with his children
Is Bollywood losing its soul in the race for spectacle and scale? Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar seems to think so. In a sharply worded critique, Akhtar has reignited the debate over Hindi cinema's identity crisis, questioning why it struggles to create depth, relatability, or rooted narratives. Meanwhile, he points to the roaring success of South Indian films, made for their local audiences by filmmakers who've stayed grounded in their culture and land.In a recent interview with The Lallantop, Akhtar didn't mince words. 'They dream in English,' he said of many modern-day Hindi filmmakers, blaming their lack of cultural connection for Bollywood's increasingly superficial storytelling. According to him, these creators—largely second-generation migrants raised in Mumbai's cosmopolitan bubble—have grown distant from their regional heritage. Their parents may have held onto their roots, but the new generation has swapped earthy storytelling for flashy action and pan-India ambition.Akhtar contrasted this with South Indian cinema—Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam—which he praised for its cultural clarity and local focus. 'South Indian movies are made by people from those regions, for those regions,' he noted. 'They haven't migrated. They're still working where they were born. That rootedness shows in the stories they tell.'Javed Akhtar recently reflected on the challenges of working with his children, Zoya and Farhan Akhtar . He admitted it's tougher to collaborate with them than with other filmmakers, as they hold him to high professional standards despite their personal bond. He revealed that Zoya, in particular, is a tough taskmaster who expects nothing less than excellence. Javed also spoke about how the siblings, though both talented, have distinct cinematic styles. Farhan leans toward a different storytelling approach than Zoya, and vice versa. Their creative visions belong to entirely different schools of filmmaking, and according to him, neither could replicate the other's work. Still, he takes pride in the fact that both are thriving in their own lanes, carving unique paths in Indian cinema

Rs 500 Currency Notes To Be Discontinued By 2026? What Government Said
New Delhi: A video on YouTube claiming that the Rs 500 currency notes will be discontinued by 2026 has been gaining traction over the past few days, triggering confusion and panic among people. However, the Centre has debunked the 'fake' claim, saying the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not made any such announcement. The video, posted by a YouTube Channel 'Capital TV' on June 2, said that the Rs 500 notes will start phasing out from March next year. The nearly 12-minute-long video gained over five lakh views. "Rs 500 notes have NOT been discontinued and remain legal tender," the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check division - the Indian government's official fact-checking agency, wrote in a post on X. It also advised citizens not to fall for misinformation. "Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it," it said. Is the ₹500 note set to be phased out by 2026? 🤔 A #YouTube video on the YT Channel 'CAPITAL TV' (capitaltvind) falsely claims that the RBI will discontinue the circulation of ₹500 notes by March 2026. #PIBFactCheck ✔️ @RBI has made NO such announcement. ✔️₹500 notes have… — PIB Fact Check (@PIBFactCheck) June 3, 2025 The current Rs 500 currency notes were introduced after the 2016 demonetisation exercise. The size of the note is 66mm x 150mm. The colour of the notes is stone grey, with the theme 'Indian heritage site - Red Fort'. Like other Indian Rupee banknotes, the Rs 500 notes have their amount written in 17 languages - English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on November 8, 2016, had demonetised the previous Rs 500 notes as a measure to fight corruption in the country and address the issue of counterfeit banknotes. The news notes were replaced two days later. The RBI had also introduced the new Rs 2,000 currency note during the demonetisation exercise. However, in May 2023, the notes were withdrawn from circulation, but they remained legal tender.

Thug Life box office collection day 2: Kamal Haasan film sees big drop, Hindi version wiped out by Housefull 5
Thug Life box office collection day 2: Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's much-hyped reunion after 37 years has not quite panned out the way the two stalwarts would have hoped for. Thug Life, their new film, has opened to lukewarm reviews and is not faring too well at the box office. On Friday, the second day of its release, the film saw a major drop. (Also read: Mani Ratnam fans get nostalgic for Nayakan, Thalapathi, Guru after lukewarm response to Thug Life) According to Sacnilk, Thug Life earned ₹7.50 crore in all languages on Friday, a steep 55% drop from its opening day figure of ₹15.50 crore. This takes its two-day India total to ₹23 crore. Interestingly, Akshay Kumar's comedy Housefull 5, which released on Friday, earned that much on its opening day itself. The release of Housefull 5 was also detrimental to Thug Life's business in the Hindi-speaking regions. Billed as a pan-India film, Thug Life was heavily marketed in the north as well. However, it opened its Hindi business at a paltry ₹65 lakh. Trade insiders predict the number for day 2 to be somewhere in the ₹25-30 lakh range. This means that Thug Life may struggle to even reach ₹5 crore net in Hindi in its lifetime, a rather disappointing figure for a star of Kamal Haasan's stature. But Thug Life is not doing too great in Tamil either. Its ₹23-crore two-day haul is far below Kamal Haasan's last box office hit, Vikram. The Lokesh Kanagaraj film had earned ₹60 crore net in its first two days upon release in 2022. Even Indian 2, the box office disappointment that was released last year, had fared better, netting ₹44 crore in its first two days at the ticket window. Clearly, Thug Life has a lot of catching up to do if it wants to stay afloat. Thug Life has notably suffered due to a non-release in Karnataka following Kamal Haasan's controversial statement on the Kannada language. Thug Life also features Trisha, Silambarasan, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, Abhirami and others. The music for the film is by maestro AR Rahman while the cinematographer is Ravi K Chandran and editor is A Sreekar Prasad.
