‘Still in shock': Gwinnett family shares lightning strike, fire survival story
Eleven family members are starting over after lightning struck their Gwinnett County home early Wednesday morning, sparking a fire that consumed their house and injured a firefighter when the roof collapsed.

Douglas, who asked that his last name not be used, was awakened at 2 in the morning by his teenage son's urgent warning that their Grouse Court home in Lawrenceville was on fire. Surveillance video from a neighbor captured the moment lightning struck the house.
'I see the bright light, that gold,' Douglas said. 'I didn't know what to do.'
After his son alerted him to the fire, Douglas quickly got into survival mode to get everyone out safely. The family of eleven, with eight people home at the time, had to evacuate quickly, including Douglas's elderly mother-in-law who uses a wheelchair after suffering a recent stroke.
'He did what he got to do, and I did what I had to do,' Douglas said.
In the chaos, no one stopped to grab personal belongings.
'We didn't even worry about phones or whatever stuff we had. We just make sure everybody get out,' Douglas said.

Everyone escaped safely, but as firefighters battled the flames from inside the house, the roof suddenly collapsed on one of the firefighters. The injured firefighter was pulled to safety by colleagues and has since been released from the hospital.
The family lost everything they had gathered over 15 years in the home. Douglas says he's still processing what happened.
'I see it happen to other people, but to see it happening to me? I'm still in shock,' he said.
Despite losing all their possessions, Douglas says his family is grateful to be alive.
'Thank God, we stayed alive. Thank God, we stayed alive,' he said.
The Red Cross is providing temporary housing. The family has started a GoFundMe page for immediate needs.

There, he received his diploma and two medals, one for band and the other for track. Afterwards, Mykale went to his local Burger King, where he works as a crew member, to pick up food for his family. Although he wasn't scheduled to work that night, he ended up helping out his busy coworkers behind the counter. 'Honestly, I walked in there and I just saw it was so busy,' he recalls. 'I was like, 'I'm not doing anything when I get home, so I might as well just help you out, give out a helping hand.' " The teen took off his cap and gown, but still wore his graduation medals around his neck, which caught the eye of a customer whose daughter went to the same school and also graduated that day. Maria Mendoza, 45, and her family — including the graduate, daughter Daizie — stopped in at the Burger King that night because Mendoza had a hankering for a Whopper. When she caught sight of Mykale through the drive-through window, she froze. "I told my husband, 'Look at him. He is working. Oh my God. He has his medals,' " she says. Moved by seeing Mykale fresh out of his graduation to prepare the customers' orders, Mendoza took out her cellphone and recorded him for several seconds before stopping when he turned around. 'I dropped the phone," says Mendoza, "and my daughter, who was in the backseat, was like, 'Mom, what are you doing? You're so weird.' " The next evening, Mendoza shared the clip of Mykale on TikTok and then went to sleep. 'When I woke up, I was just blown away,' she says. As of Friday, June 6, the TikTok has generated over 4.4 million views. It was her daughter Jazmine who suggested setting up an online fundraiser on Mykale's behalf. 'So I decided to put a GoFundMe to pay for his college tuition,' she says. (As of Friday, June 6, that GoFundMe has raised over $200,000.) Mendoza later stopped at the Burger King and asked for Mykale's contact information from his coworkers so she could tell him the news. They declined to give it to her, so she left them her phone number to pass it on to him. Twenty hours passed and Mendoza had not heard from Mykale. With the donations to the GoFundMe continuing to pour in, Mendoza went back to the Burger King to speak with Mykale's manager. The manager then called Mykale and told him to come to the restaurant. ''I need you to come right now. This is life changing. Please, I beg you. Come right now,' ' the manager said, according to Mendoza. Fifteen minutes later, Mykale and his mother entered the Burger King and Mendoza told them what happened. Upon hearing the news, an emotional Mykale hugged his mother and Mendoza. 'Honestly, when she told me about the video, I was surprised,' Mykale says. 'But when she showed me the GoFundMe, I was like, 'Wow. I might go to college now.' Foster care agency begins donor-funded building expansion, increases access to services
An area foster care agency is breaking ground on building expansions to accommodate its growth. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Isaiah's Place, located at 61 Stanfield Road in Troy, announced on social media Friday morning that they are working with Level MB Construction on building expansions. 'Isaiah's Place has been one of the fastest-growing foster care agencies in the state of Ohio for the last year and a half. Because of this, we have used every square inch of our building to make room for offices, trainings, meetings, Child Advocacy observations and investigations, as well as therapy rooms for our families,' a spokesperson for Isaiah's Place said in the post. Tree fire spreads into Sacramento County apartment complex
Several families have been displaced after a tree caught fire and spread flames onto an apartment building in north Sacramento County early Friday morning. Metro Fire of Sacramento crews responded to the scene along Garfield Avenue, south of Auburn Boulevard, just before 4 a.m. Firefighters found that a tree had caught fire and the flames were extending to the attic of a nearby apartment complex. The fire was quickly contained by crews and no injuries were reported. However, a total of three apartment units were affected. The Red Cross will be helping those families, firefighters say. Exactly what started the original fire is under investigation.
