What is "Black Dandyism," the theme of this year's Met Gala

Axios02-05-2025

The theme of this year's Met Gala, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," centers around Black dandyism, which put simply is about well-tailored, creative men's wear and the attitude of the wearer.
Why it matters: The Super Bowl of fashion will highlight overlooked contributions of Black culture on how we dress.
The theme is inspired by Monica L. Miller's book, " Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity," which documents Black dandies' emergence and evolution.
Fashion writer Ty Gaskins says Black dandyism is"about identity, power, and resistance. In a world where Black people have been marginalized, the dandy became a figure who defied the rigid categories of race and class that sought to confine them."
This year's Met Gala co-chairs are perfect examples: Actor Colman Domingo, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, artist A$AP Rocky, artist Pharrell Williams plus Vogue EIC Anna Wintour. Basketball star LeBron James is an honorary co-chair.
Zoom in: Think of someone who's always put together, perfectly groomed, and wearing clothing that's expertly tailored.
In a sea of traditional tuxes, cummerbunds and bowties, those who own the style have consistently hit red carpets in looks that shake up the men's wear ecosystem, but still prioritize elegance, tailoring and style.
The category is not exclusive to men. Women who embrace the style, like artist Janelle Monáe, can be dandies too.
Between the lines: The theme is a stark contrast to the Trump administration's efforts to scrub mentions of race, sexuality or gender from schools, arts programming and workplace policies.

Awkward! Tom Brady Gets Booed At Indy 500

Tom Brady was welcomed to the Indy 500 by jeers and boos, but the retired NFL star took the icy reception in stride as he greeted participants during a pre-race ceremony. Widely considered the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) by most NFL fans, Brady remains a controversial figure among Indianapolis Colts supporters, who clearly haven't forgotten the longstanding rivalry between the Colts and Brady's former team, the New England Patriots. Advertisement The Colts and Patriots share one of the most intense rivalries in professional football, having faced off in the 2014 AFC Championship Game—an event now infamous for the 'Deflategate' scandal. During that game, Brady was accused of having footballs deflated to make them easier to throw. 5 shots of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce canoodling at Oilers-Panthers

5 shots of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce canoodling at Oilers-Panthers The Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers put on an absolute show on Thursday night as the Oilers picked up a much-needed win in the Stanley Cup Final to take Game 4 in dramatic fashion. The reigning champion Panthers tied the game at 4-4 with 19 seconds left in the third period, but would go on to lose in overtime. Among the crowd for the immediate classic was celebrity couple Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. The singer and Kansas City tight end were in Florida to take in the game, and the pair could not have seemed happier throughout the evening. Swift and Kelce have been dating since summer of 2023, and they were seen being affectionate with each other throughout the evening. Cameras caught the 14-time Grammy winner and the 3-time Super Bowl champ canoodling, laughing and overall just enjoying each other's company. Both were thrilled at the exciting finish of the game, and the NHL playoffs are just the latest in the couple's sporty run. Kelce and Swift made it to both tennis and baseball in the last couple years, and Swift has, unsurprisingly, been a mainstay at NFL games as she supports her beau. Kelce will kick off his 13th NFL season this year, so Swift's sports fan era will keep going strong.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce attend Game 4 of Stanley Cup Final between Panthers and Oilers

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — There was bad blood at Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. Not just on the ice. Pop superstar Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce were among the celebrities that flocked to Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday to watch Game 4 of the final — with the 'Bad Blood' singer seen holding hands with Kelce as they headed to their seats. Advertisement And they were in attendance for a thrilling game. Edmonton came from down three goals in the first period to win it 5-4 in overtime, tying the series 2-2. Kelce, a Super Bowl-winning tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is a known hockey fan along with his brother Jason Kelce. And ever since Swift and Kelce began their high-profile romance in 2023, the 14-time Grammy Award winning singer has been known to pop in on big sporting events — including the last two Super Bowls — and cause an excited frenzy for fans. There were rumblings ahead of Thursday's game that the couple might attend the final. A helicopter landed near Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, ahead of the game. The VIP entrance to the area was also closed off and the media elevator was not available to be used for a period of time before pregame warmups began. Advertisement The pair was shown on the television broadcast during the first period of the game. Swift recently announced that she regained control over her entire body of work. In a lengthy note posted to her official website, Swift said that all the music she's ever made now belongs to her after she has purchased her catalog of recordings — originally released through Big Machine Records — from their most recent owner, the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. Over the last few years, Swift has been rerecording and releasing her early albums in an attempt to regain control of her music. Other celebs in attendance included former Miami Dolphins star defensive end Jason Taylor, who banged the drum before the game, and hockey great Jaromir Jagr. Miami Heat captain Bam Adebayo was joined by former Heat captain Udonis Haslem on the drum on Monday. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and Alanis Thames, The Associated Press
