Students get grand welcome back to school
Madurai: Government schools across Madurai reopened on Monday with festive celebrations as teachers and staff pulled out all the stops to make the first day of the academic year joyful and memorable for students returning from summer break.
At Singarathoppu Corporation Middle School, students were welcomed with the traditional Tamil trinity of fruits — mango, jackfruit, and banana — and each was gifted a sapling to encourage tree planting. "We try to introduce something new every year to give students a reason to look forward to school," said headmaster Joseph Jeyaseelan.
At LKP Nagar Panchayat Union Middle School, costumed performers dressed as teddy bears and clowns danced and enacted skits to promote good habits and the value of education.
"Students were excited to engage with the performers and enjoyed the interactive session," said headmaster M Thennavan.
At the Panchayat Union Primary School in Y Othakadai, students were greeted with nadaswaram music and traditional banana tree decorations. Rose petals were showered on them, and each received a rose as a token of welcome.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu commercial taxes minister P Moorthy announced ₹50 lakh in MLA constituency funds for the Othakadai Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, which recorded a 99% pass rate in public exams.

"Education is the greatest asset for any student. This school's performance shows that government schools are now on par with private institutions," he said, adding that the funds would be used to build additional classrooms.
Staff also urged the minister to address staff shortages due to growing student strength.
Madurai mayor Indrani Ponvasanth and corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan distributed free uniforms, books, and toys to 1,625 students from 40 corporation-run primary and middle schools.
"Students should take full advantage of government welfare schemes to grow in knowledge and skills. Education will uplift anyone," said the mayor.
Officials from the school education department said all students in 1,536 government and aided schools in Madurai district are being provided with free textbooks, notebooks, and other materials. Around 1.11 lakh students enrolled in the noon meal scheme are also receiving free uniforms.
