Isle of Man TT: Norwegian fans charter ship to visit races

BBC Newsa day ago

Two motorcycle fans from Norway, who hatched a "crazy idea after a couple of beers", have charted a ship for 145 fans to visit the Isle of Man TT.The MS Nordstjernen arrived in Manx waters on Monday after setting off from Bergen on Friday with enthusiasts from across the country onboard.Ole Skaar, from the Bergen Motorcycle Club, said: "Every motorcyclist has heard about the TT, you just have to do it."His friend Erling Thomas Pettersen said every morning at breakfast he had been surrounded by his fellow enthusiasts "sitting there smiling" because they were at the "Mecca of racing".
Tens of thousands of visitors travel to the island for the two-week event, which sees riders compete on 37.7-miles (61km) of closed public roads. The two friends, who decided they were keen to visit the 2025 event, had the idea to find a boat to hire "after a couple of beers", Mr Skaar said. That led to them organising to charter the vessel, which was built in 1956 and usually visits ports around the north of Europe, three days later.
Mr Petterson said he found it was "no problem" to encourage fans sign up for the trip, and ended up with a waiting list of enthusiasts who wanted to join them.Fellow members of the Bergen Motorcycle Club club were given "first right to join" before other fans from across the country were recruited to take the trip, he saidDespite some rough seas on the journey to the island, he said those on the trip were "so happy" because "everyone on Isle of Man is so friendly and helpful".Mr Petterson said the duo were already planning to organise the charter again for the 2026 festival and into the future, with about half of those onboard interested in returning."The TT is fantastic, we think we can do it for longer than the Vikings were standing here," he said."You have to do it at least once in your life."

Robin Goodfellow's racing tips: Best bets for Saturday, June 7

Mail Sport's racing expert Robin Goodfellow delivers his tips for Saturday's meetings at Musselburgh, Epsom Downs, Worcester, Doncaster, Hexham, Chepstow and Lingfield. RUBY'S PROFIT (NB) has the ideal draw (Epsom 2.10). From stall 18, she can use the blistering pace she has shown on her three starts this season — winning twice and finishing runner-up in the other — to get to the nearside rail and lead. DEMOCRACY DILEMMA (NAP) will relish the five-furlong downhill speed test (Epsom 2.45) and can go one better than last year, despite racing off 2lb higher. He drops back into handicap company for the first time in five runs. CHRIS BAKER'S WIZARD OF ODDS 1.00 Epsom: ROYAL DRESS went close in this race last year before going on to land a Group Three contest in Ireland. She made a pleasing return to action in a higher grade last month. 2.45 Epsom: CLARENDON HOUSE was second in this race two years ago, while nothing went to plan in last year's renewal. He has since won two Listed races and is in good form. 4.15 Epsom: FOURONEOHFEVER enjoyed a productive 2024, including a placed effort in a Royal Ascot handicap. He is coming back to form and should have his ideal ground. Arsenal fans expecting '30 assists a year with Sesko' after Martin Odegaard's sublime pass to Haaland for Norway goal

ARSENAL fans are banking on Martin Odegaard to bag 30 assists next season, after seeing him partnered up with a "proper top-tier cf". Odegaard, 26, struggled to find his best form for the Gunners after returning from a major ankle injury. 5 5 5 5 5 Part of the reason for that lack of form was due to Arsenal being without a recognised frontman for much of the season. Kai Havertz was preferred in striker role by Mikel Arteta when available, but when he suffered a season-ending injury in February the Gunners opted to play Mikel Merino there. Merino, to his credit, performed well, but fans of the north London club still called for them to sign a top tier striker to get winning major honours again, rather than having near misses. Arsenal transfer chiefs are said to be working to find that player, with Benjamin Sesko heavily linked with a transfer to the Emirates from RB Leipzig. Sesko, 22, has a similar profile to Manchester City ace Erling Haaland. Fans watching Norway 's World Cup qualifier with Italy on Friday had the chance to see Odegaard in action with Haaland. And it's safe to say the link-up has raised expectations among the Arsenal faithful for next season. With the score already 2-0 after goals from Alexander Sorloth and Antonio Nusa, Odegaard picked up the ball in midfield in the 42nd minute. He then spotted an expertly-timed run from Haaland and played a perfectly weighted pass into the 24-year-old's path. Haaland then dribbled the ball around Champions League winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before squeezing the ball into an empty net. Arsenal fans reacting to the goal on social media were thrilled to see Odegaard's contribution. One fan said: "He's feasting this season with Sesko. He finally gets a runner." A second said: "Teta needs to give the man willing runners." A third added: "He'd have 30 assists a season with a proper top-tier cf." Another said: "All he needs is a big striker." A fifth said: "Sesko is gonn eat nice." A sixth wrote: "See that vision. Sesko will cook." The most recent reports suggested Sesko would cost around £60million, despite his club wanting to bag £85m for him. Elsewhere, they have been linked with a and Chelsea outcast Kepa Arrizabalaga as they eye a back-up for David Raya. Norway's win tonight also put them in a strong position at the top of Group I, with three wins in as many games.

Clinical Norway hand Italy painful 3-0 defeat

OSLO, June 6 (Reuters) - Norway stunned Italy with a 3-0 win on Friday, handing the visitors a humiliating start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. In Group I, Norway lead the standings with nine points after three matches. Italy were playing their first match in the qualifying campaign. The soaking wet home crowd had reason to cheer after 14 minutes when Alexander Sorloth timed his run perfectly onto a through ball from Antonio Nusa and slotted it home from close range. Nusa lit up the night with a moment of brilliance after 34 minutes, controlling a pass with a slick first touch, bursting past two Italian defenders with a dazzling run, and drilling it in from the edge of the box. The first-half rout continued when another through ball from Martin Odegaard found an unmarked Erling Haaland, who rounded Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to score Norway's third just before the break. The continued pouring rain cooled the match down in second-half with Norway coming closest with substitute Patrick Berg sending a screamer into the post just after the hour mark, but no more goals were scored.
