Seattle Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer doubled down Wednesday on his admiration for Albert Rusnak, labeling the midfielder's goal against the Portland Timbers 'a classic' demonstration of the player's ability. The 30-year-old Rusnak scored in the 30th minute to earn the 1-1 tie and led the team with three chances created — a demonstration of his goal-scoring as much as his creative play from midfield.
'It was a classic Albert Rusnak goal,' Schmetzer said.
'As soon as he got the ball on his foot, I knew he was going to score. He's done that countless times in his career.'
Right-back Alex Roldan also highlighted how much Rusnak offers in and out of possession. 'We rely on him a lot to create these moments, and when he's not in those positions, you can see how it affects our team. He's vital.' Roldan said.
Rusnak's return is at a time when it matters most. Seattle Sounders have not lost in 12 home games in all competitions, and also possess an amazing 21-match unbeaten run against FC Dallas at
Lumen Field

Dallas last defeated Seattle away in 2011.
FC Dallas, on the other hand, comes to Seattle winless in their past three matches and ranked 11th in the Western Conference. Even in defeat to the Houston Dynamo last weekend, 2-0, there was something to smile about in the return of midfielder
Paxton Pomykal
from a long-term knee injury. Pomykal conceded the moment was emotional: "Four hundred days is a long time. I was back on the field before I even had time to process it.
For Seattle, striker
Danny Musovski
is another threat up front. He has now added six goals in his previous seven MLS games and has three goal involvements in games against FC Dallas before. For FC Dallas, Lucho Acosta is still their focus. Even with strong statistics since arriving from FC Cincinnati — three goals and numerous chances created — he has not scored against the Sounders, one of only seven MLS sides he has not breached.

With Seattle Sounders looking to continue their home stranglehold and close in on their playoff charge, the focus will once again be on Albert Rusnak. With FC Dallas finding form and scoring troubling away from home, Schmetzer's side is expected to claim another outcome at Lumen Field — a ground that has long been a fortress for home Dallas teams.

Thunder's Gilgeous-Alexander hungry to cap MVP season with NBA crown

Oklahoma City superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has piled up the individual accolades in leading the Thunder to the NBA Finals, but the Canadian guard says a title triumph against the Indiana Pacers is the prize that matters. "I don't play for the individual stuff, I don't play for anything else besides winning I never have in my whole life," Gilgeous-Alexander said Wednesday, a day before the Thunder host the Pacers in game one of the best-of-seven championship series. From youth basketball in Canada through university basketball in the United States, Gilgeous-Alexander said, his focus has been on winning titles. "Now I'm 26, I want to win the NBA championship," he said. "It's always about winning for me." With that goal in his sights, Gilgeous-Alexander delivered a spectacular season that saw him supplant Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic as the NBA Most Valuable Player. "SGA" averaged 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds. 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocked shots per game in leading the Thunder to an NBA-best 68 regular-season wins. He became the first player to lead the league in games with at least 20 points , 30 points , 40 points and 50 points in a season since James Harden in 2018-19. Named MVP of the Western Conference finals after the Thunder dispatched the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games, Gilgeous-Alexander could become the first league scoring champion since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000 to win the NBA title in the same season. Gilgeous-Alexander said it had been "a long week to wait" since polishing off Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves which followed a seven-game victory over Jokic and the Nuggets in the conference semi-finals. He acknowledged after the conference semis that he'd been nervous in the run-up to game seven but that experience has only helped him in the build-up to the Finals. "As these playoffs go on, you get better in controlling the situations, controlling your emotions. You understand what's coming," he said. "I just figured out how to navigate through all the emotions and the nerves and the waiting process, which is just plugging into my loved ones, try not to think about it so much, stress about it so much just enjoy life and stay in the moment." In addition to not looking too far forward, Gilgeous-Alexander said he is also not yet looking back on what has been an historic season for the Thunder. "I've been so focused on just game one," he said. "Trying to be the best version of myself for this group and trying to make sure that we're clicking on all cylinders on the biggest stage of our careers has been on the forefront of my mind and all I do worry about when I worry about basketball." bb/rcw

Thunder, Pacers open battle in search of first NBA title

OKLAHOMA CITY The Oklahoma City Thunder are in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2012. The Indiana Pacers haven't been to the finals since 2000. Neither has ever won an NBA title, but one will hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy in 2025. The final step there begins Thursday when the teams square off in Game 1 in Oklahoma City. "I haven't really wrapped my head around the fact that I'm in the finals," Thunder third-year star Jalen Williams said. "... It's definitely a blessing that we're here and I try not to get too caught up in it because we still have a job to do." The teams are tied together through Paul George. The Pacers' and Thunder's trades of George helped chart their path to these finals. First, in July 2017, Indiana traded George to Oklahoma City for Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis. In February 2022, the Pacers traded Sabonis as part of a package that brought them Tyrese Haliburton a cornerstone piece to this run. Oklahoma City's haul from its own George trade has been even more impactful to its current roster. After two All-Star seasons with the Thunder, George asked to be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. Oklahoma City acquired not only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, this season's NBA leading scorer and Most Valuable Player, but also the draft pick that was used to select Williams. Gilgeous-Alexander has turned into the Thunder's biggest offensive weapon he's averaging 31.6 points in Oklahoma City's 12 playoff wins but also their overall tone-setter. "Just has an 'I'm-gonna-get-it-done' mentality," Williams said. "I think it's rubbed off on the rest of the team." While the Thunder have seemingly been destined to reach the finals, going 68-14 in the regular season to win the Western Conference going away, Indiana's path has been much less straightforward. The Pacers were under .500 as late as early January before turning things around and finishing as the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference. "We started rocky but we just stayed steady and kept being ourselves and we just kept getting better," Indiana's Pascal Siakam said. In the playoffs, though, Indiana has been plenty dominant, beating the Bucks in five games, top-seed Cleveland in five games, and the Knicks in six to advance to their first finals since Reggie Miller starred for the franchise. The Thunder swept the two meetings during the regular season, the most recent a 132-111 victory in Oklahoma City on March 29. Much like it did during the regular season, the Thunder's defense has set the tone. Oklahoma City's 104.7 defensive rating points allowed per 100 possessions is tops in the NBA during the playoffs. The Pacers have shown plenty of offensive firepower, with a 117.7 offensive rating in 16 playoff games behind only Cleveland's 122.6 and ahead of Oklahoma City's 115.9.. "There's no shortcuts to beating this team," Haliburton said of the Thunder. Indiana had an adventurous trip to Oklahoma City. The Pacers' plane had to stop in Tulsa, Okla., due to storms in the Oklahoma City area, though it finally was able to land Tuesday night. Field Level Media

Oklahoma weather throws Indiana Pacers a stormy welcome ahead of NBA Finals Game 1

Pascal Siakam. Photo via Getty Images Oklahoma's erratic weather conditions laid down an unconventional stormy welcome for the Indiana Pacers as the team arrived for Game 1 of the NBA finals . The Oklahoma City Thunder will be facing the Pacers for their first championship victory after the franchise won its only trophy in 1979 as the Seattle Sonics. The Pacers, on the other hand, have never lifted the championship trophy. Oklahoma's severe weather conditions disrupt the smooth travel of the Indiana Pacers, flight gets delayed by multiple hours Game 1 of the NBA Finals has been scheduled for June 5, 2025, after fans got to witness some thrilling moments in the respective conference semifinals and finals. The Indiana Pacers entered the NBA finals after a couple of decade-long disappointing playoffs and conference finals since 2000, contrary to the Oklahoma City Thunder's entering the NBA finals last in 2012. While the players from both teams are hyped up and gearing up for some thrilling finale games, the weather conditions in Oklahoma dampened the spirit of the Pacers. It is not a very long flight from Indianapolis to Oklahoma. However, a severe thunderstorm warning in the city led to certain inconveniences faced by the Pacers team. The flight from Indianapolis took off at 3pm ET and was expected to land at the OKC Will Rogers International Airport in a few hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo However, common to the region, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued, which led to the chartered plane circling Northeast Oklahoma before landing in Tulsa. The flight was being operated by Delta Airlines. After refuelling at Tulsa, the flight took off, but this time, instead of taking a direct route towards OKC, it travelled towards the south, moving away from the storm. The affected areas were primarily the northern parts of Missouri and Kansas, all the way to North Texas. Facing a long struggle of beating the storm and ensuring the safety of the players, the plane finally landed in Oklahoma City at around 6:58 pm CT after almost 7 hours. With the Pacers landing safely now, the only thing between them and the championship trophy is the winner of the Western Conference, the Thunder team. Individually considered as one of the strongest teams in the league, both the Pacers and the Thunder will be facing each other to claim the championship trophy, which will be the first one for both teams.
