Police say 10 people killed in Austrian school shooting, including alleged perpetrator

Austrian police say 10 people are dead, including the alleged perpetrator, after a shooting at a school in the south-eastern Austrian city of Graz.
They said several people were also seriously injured in the attack on Tuesday, local time.
The city's mayor Elke Kahr earlier told the Austria Press Agency (APA) that several students and at least one adult were among the dead.
Ms Kahr described the events as a "terrible tragedy", and said many other people were taken to hospitals with injuries.
Police earlier said they believed the suspected shooter acted alone.
Special forces were among those sent to the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school after a call at 10am on Tuesday, local time.
A local police spokesman said the area had been secured, the school had been evacuated and relatives of the victims and pupils were being cared for.
"There is no further danger for the population," he told Austrian television.
According to Austrian public broadcaster ORF, citing police, a student was behind the shooting, which led to the school's evacuation.
Police deployed to the scene in large numbers, with police and other emergency vehicles guarding the area around the school.
At least one police helicopter flew above the area, according to photos published by the regional newspaper Kleine Zeitung.
Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker said the shooting was a "national tragedy" and offered his condolences to the impacted families.
"The rampage at a school in Graz is a national tragedy that has deeply shaken our entire country," he said in a statement.
European Union top diplomat Kaja Kallas said she was "deeply shocked" by reports of the shooting.
"Every child should feel safe at school and be able to learn free from fear and violence," Ms Kallas posted on X.
In Brussels, European Union spokesperson Paula Pinho also offered her condolences.
"We stand together in mourning while we seek clarity in the wake of this horrible event in a school," she said.
Graz is Austria's second-biggest city, home about 300,000 inhabitants.

Hot air balloon crash in Brazil kills eight people

At least eight people have been killed after a hot air balloon carrying 21 passengers crashed in Brazil's southern state of Santa Catarina, local and state officials say. Footage shared by local news outlet G1 showed billows of smoke coming from the balloon, which was in flames as it hurtled toward the ground in the municipality of Praia Grande. A video on social media shows two people falling through the air as the fire spread onboard the aircraft. Thirteen survivors were transported to nearby hospitals, according to the fire department. Footage shared by local news outlet G1 showed billows of smoke coming from the balloon in flames as it hurtled towards the ground. The crash happened about 8am Saturday local time, military firefighter Zevir Cipriano said. A fire started in the basket, prompting the pilot to try to land the balloon. Thirteen people, including the pilot, managed to jump out but eight were unable to. Without the weight of the others, the balloon began rising again. "These people ended up dying — four charred and another four jumped out of the balloon when it was falling," Cipriano Jr said. Three people died hugging each other, said Ulisses Gabriel, chief of Santa Catarina's civil police force, on X. "We are in mourning. A tragedy has happened. We will see how it unfolds, what happened, why it happened. But the important thing now is for the state structure to do what it can," Governor Jorginho Mello said in a video on X. Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his solidarity with victims' families and said he was placing the federal government at the disposal of victims and local authorities. Mello said he had asked authorities to head to the municipality "to do as much as possible to rescue, to help, to take to hospital, to comfort the families". The balloon's expected flight time was 45 minutes, G1 said, with the balloon reaching 1000 metres and cost 550 reais (about $A150) per passenger. Sobrevoar, the company responsible for the multi-coloured balloon, said it complied with all regulations and had a clean accident record before Saturday. Praia Grande is a common destination for hot air ballooning, a popular activity in some parts of Brazil's south during June festivities that celebrate Catholic saints such as Saint John. Last Sunday, a balloon fell in Sao Paulo state, killing a 27-year-old woman and injuring 11 others, G1 reported.

Matthew Harley Gempton tells murder trial of Peter Nguyen-Ha his former friend fired fatal shots

A debt collector turned prosecution witness in a Perth murder trial has described how his former friend fired shots into a suburban home, killing an innocent man. Peter Nguyen-Ha is on trial, accused of murdering Ralph Matthews Cox, who was shot dead through the bedroom window of his Landsdale home in January 2022. The court had heard that Mr Nguyen-Ha and Matthew Harley Gempton had gone to the home looking for another man over stolen money. Gempton, who has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Matthews Cox, has taken the stand to give evidence for the prosecution in return for a reduced sentence. Gempton told the WA Supreme Court Mr Nguyen-Ha loaded a shotgun when they were driving to Landsdale, assuring him they were only "salt rounds". The court heard that when they arrived Mr Nguyen-Ha walked to the house, wearing a mask and carrying the shotgun. He told the court he heard someone say "who turned the power off" and "who's out the front". Gempton told the court Mr Nguyen-Ha called out "where's Anthony Prior" and then fired three times. He said he then heard a woman scream. He described the third shot as "definitely louder" than the others and said he saw "a big flame that lit up the front of the house". He told the court that when Mr Nguyen-Ha got back into the car, he said he "just shot at the window, the corner of the window" to scare them. Gempton maintained he did not find out until later that someone had died, when he saw it on the news. Police had said Mr Cox, who suffered fatal injuries in the shooting, had no involvement with crime and was an innocent victim. Gempton was a debt collector for drug money, telling the court he used to drive Mr Nguyen-Ha around in return for money and meth. The 36-year-old said he had been using methylamphetamine "more than once a day". He also told how he came to shoot himself in the leg after Mr Nguyen-Ha was assaulted, and had tens of thousands of dollars stolen in December 2021. He said he was driving someone else's car, searching for Mr Nguyen-Ha, who had asked him to go to a 7-Eleven in Wangara. Gempton said he looked around inside the vehicle for a weapon and found a rifle he did not know was there. "Pulled it out and sat it on my lap, and it went off," Gempton said. "Scorched all the nerve endings on one side. "Just pissing out blood on one side." He went to Joondalup Hospital, where he was interviewed by police but lied to them, claiming he was shot by a bikie. Gempton denied firing any guns on the night of the Landsdale shooting, or in earlier incidents in Girrawheen and Wanneroo which took place days earlier. In these, he and others, including Peter Nguyen-Ha, had allegedly targeted the wrong homes looking for Anthony Prior. Prosecutor Beau Sertorio asked Gempton why he had pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other charges if he had never actually fired a weapon. The 36-year-old said he still "had a role to play", saying he did not call police after the first shooting at Girrawheen. He told the court that initially, he "thought it was just going to be a fight with Anthony Prior" and following that he "got told to go" to the other scenes. At Wanneroo and Landsdale he was "just driving", he said. The court heard Gempton's sentence was cut by more than five years and nine months, to 12 years, and he could be re-sentenced if he did not give full and truthful evidence. He is due to be cross-examined on Monday. The trial continues.

Man charged after shooting leaves Tasmanian Police officer dead

A man has been charged with murder after a police officer was shot and killed in rural Tasmania on Monday. Constable Keith Smith was killed as he and a colleague attempted to serve a court-ordered repossession warrant on a property near the small town of North Motton in Tasmania's northwest. The alleged gunman was shot by another police officer before being arrested. Tasmanian Police on Thursday charged a 46-year-old man with murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault. The North Motton man appeared in a bedside court sitting at Launceston Hospital. He will reappear in court at a later date. He remains under guard in hospital where he is receiving medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries. Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams thanked those involved in the ongoing investigation for their dedication and professionalism. Commissioner Adams earlier said the two uniformed officers were accompanied by three members of Tasmania Police Special Operations Group (SOG) for a 'frontline assist deployment' before the incident. 'On arrival at the property, the two police officers exited their police vehicle and shortly thereafter constable Keith Smith was tragically shot and killed,' the Commissioner alleged. 'Having heard the gunshots, the three members of SOG transitioned to their tactical kit, placed on their body armour, changed their weaponry and made their way up the driveway where they heard the shots had been fired.' 'An SOG operative was able to swiftly apprehend the offender after shooting him in the hand.' A memoriam page for Constable Smith has been uploaded to the Tasmania Police website, where members of the public can offer condolences to his family and colleagues. 'Keith was an experienced and well-respected officer with 25 years' experience working in northern and western Tasmania,' the page said. 'He received the Commissioner's Medal in 2011, and 20-year clasp in 2021, as well as the National Police Service Medal in 2016.'
