Tunisian national shot dead by neighbour in the south of France
PARIS: A Tunisian national was shot dead by his neighbour in the south of France, the prosecutor in the Draguignan commune said in a statement, adding that the incident was being investigated as a racially motivated crime.
The victim, who was said to be 'possibly 35' but has not been officially identified, was killed late on Saturday in the town of Puget-sur-Argens. A 25-year-old Turkish national was also shot in the hand by the man and taken to hospital.
The incident comes one month after the fatal stabbing of Aboubakar Cisse, a 22-year-old man from Mali, in a mosque in the southern town of La Grand-Combe, amid rising racism in France.
France's interior minister Bruno Retailleau, in a post on X on Monday, said that 'racism must be severely punished' and that the shooting was 'intolerable.' Retailleau's critics said that his declarations on migration and Islam had contributed towards rising levels of hate crime.
Last year, French police recorded an 11% rise in racist, xenophobic or anti-religious crimes, according to official data published in March.
In a statement late on Sunday, the prosecutor said the suspect in the weekend shooting was a 53-year-old who practises sports shooting. He had published hateful and racist content on his social media account before and after killing his neighbour, the prosecutor added.
France has the largest Muslim population in Europe, numbering more than 6 million and making up about 10% of the country's population.
Politicians across the political spectrum, including President Emmanuel Macron, have attacked what they describe as Islamist separatism in a way that rights groups have said stigmatises Muslims and amounts to discrimination.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government should consider classifying smoking and vaping as Syariah criminal offences to reinforce public health efforts and curb addiction among Muslims in Malaysia, says a law academic. Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (Usim) Syariah and Law Faculty Associate Prof Dr Muzaffar Syah Mallow, in a statement, said such a move would support ongoing efforts to combat smoking, which continues to have devastating health impacts on society. He noted that although cigarette smoking remains the most common form, the rapid spread of modern alternatives such as electronic cigarettes and vape devices has complicated the issue. Cigarettes, which contain toxic chemicals from the tobacco leaf and those produced during combustion, are known to cause harm to nearly every organ and are linked to numerous life-threatening illnesses. Citing global statistics, he said smoking contributes to around eight million deaths annually, with half of all smokers dying from smoking-related causes including cancer, heart disease, and lung complications. Vaping, which involves inhaling vapour from devices powered by batteries and atomisers, has similarly been linked to serious health issues including lung damage, cardiovascular disease, and impaired brain function, especially in young users. He referred to international studies showing vaping increases risks for asthma, strokes, and coronary conditions, and may affect brain development, leading to poor decision-making and impulsive behaviour. Muzaffar pointed out that Islam has long addressed the dangers of smoking, with a fatwa issued by the National Fatwa Council in 1995 declaring smoking haram due to the harm it causes to individuals and those around them. The 2015 fatwa further extended this ruling to electronic cigarettes and vape devices, but enforcement remains lacking, as many Muslims still downplay the severity of the issue. Ivory Coast's final electoral list excludes opposition leader Thiam

Thiam told Reuters in April he would not drop his presidential bid despite a court ruling that his name be struck from the list due to his French nationality at the time of registration. The electoral commission's decision risks reviving tensions in a country that emerged from more than a decade of civil war in the early 2000s. The conflict was partly fuelled by disputes over nationality and electoral eligibility. Thiam, 62, was elected as leader of the PDCI, the main opposition party in the world's top cocoa-producing nation, in December 2023. "My removal from the electoral roll by the Independent Electoral Commission is a sad but telling example of Ivory Coast's abandonment of democracy," Thiam said in a statement to Reuters. "We will fight, fight for democracy and peace in our country," said Simon Doho, president of the PDCI parliamentary group. Other prominent politicians, including former president Laurent Gbagbo and his close ally Charles Ble Goude - both acquitted on charges of crimes against humanity related to the civil war - were also ruled ineligible for the October election. So too was former prime minister and rebel leader Guillaume Soro, who was sentenced in absentia to life in prison in 2021 on charges of plotting a coup against his former ally, President Alassane Ouattara. Ouattara, who has served three terms, has not declared whether he'll run in the election. His ruling RHDP party is scheduled to select its candidate on June 21 and 22. Thiam's lawyer, Mathias Chichportich, said his client had filed a complaint on Tuesday with the United Nations Human Rights Committee. Indonesian jailed for Bali bombing starts coffee business
SURABAYA: An Indonesian convicted in the deadly 2002 Bali nightclub bombings has launched his own coffee business after being released on parole, and has said he will use some of the earnings to help survivors of the attacks. Umar Patek, a member of the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah group, was jailed for 20 years in 2012 after he was found guilty of making bombs that ripped through two Bali nightclubs, killing 202 people, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians. He was released on parole in 2022 and has apologised to the victims. Patek's release sparked anger in Australia and Indonesia. At the launch of the coffee business on Tuesday, a banner with Patek's face festooned a cafe in the Indonesian city of Surabaya on Java island. It is owned by dentist David Andreasmito and will use the beans Patek supplies and roasts. "I was still shell-shocked by the outside world," Patek said, adding he had trouble finding work after his release and was worried his image would affect the business. "The stigma of a former terrorism convict made it hard for me to find work," he said. Patek said he understood that many people were still angry with him but pleaded to them "not to let that doubt stick", adding he would give portions of his earnings to survivors. David said he went into business with Patek because he had apologised and wanted people to give him a second chance. Since Patek's release, Indonesian authorities have highlighted him as an example of the deradicalisation efforts launched by the world's most populous Muslim-majority country to counter a resurgence in Islamic militancy. Chusnul Chotimah, a survivor of the Bali attacks who is covered in burn scars and says she struggles to pay for life-saving treatments, jostled in front of the crowd to speak to Patek at the launch. "I used to have grudges against you," she said. "I forgive you for what you did. I know you've changed for the better." Chusnul later said she hoped Patek could help out the survivors. "Don't just say sorry," she said.
