St. Joseph Backpack Food Assistance Program distributed nearly 43K meals to students
(WFRV) – The St. Joseph Backpack Food Assistance Program distributed nearly 43,000 meals to students in eight school districts for the 2024-2025 school year.
Each meal contained eight ready-to-eat healthy meal items that students would take home with them over the weekend.
The participating schools said that students felt less stressed when heading home.
Registration open, date announced for 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field
'That program is for children from kindergarten through high school and so the teachers in each school determined what the best way to get that to the kids was but generally at the end of the week they would get that bag to take home and have something to eat,' said Monica Claire, St. Joseph Food Program Executive Director.
Schools also reported that students in the program felt more ready to learn on Mondays.

Proposed bill would allow Pennsylvania students to take mental health days
PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — A representative announced plans to model new legislation after a current Utah law that allows students to take mental health days. Representative Napoleon Nelson (D-Montgomery County) called mental health a 'significant issue' among students and youth. Adding that in a 2023 report, 98,000 students have depression and over half had not received care for their mental health. 'Additionally, high school students with depression are more than two times more likely to drop out than their peers, and suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents,' Nelson wrote. 'Fanta's Law' aims to require Pennsylvania police firearms training courses The proposed legislation would be modeled after a current law in Utah. The bill would allow students to take excused absences to recover from mental health issues, while not creating additional personal or sick days. An additional part of the legislation would require a staff member to talk to a student who has taken two or more mental health days. In a memo to lawmakers, the additional part of the legislation would make it so that students can be connected to mental health support. 'Student mental health is just as important as physical health, and normalizing support for students with mental health issues has increased in the last several years. Teen mental health has been recognized as a crisis, and it is important for the Commonwealth to take charge in protecting the well-being of its citizens,' Nelson wrote. Nelson argues that these are the benefits of the proposed legislation: Normalizes mental health support and encourages students to take care of their mental health Provides schools with additional insight Would allow schools to connect students with essential supports rather than simply punishing them The full memo to lawmakers can be read here. Memphis retirement community celebrates annual First Responders Day
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An appreciation day that was hosted by a local retirement community on Friday focused on showing gratitude to first responders for the work they do. There is a multitude of stories from those at Trezevant, a retirement community, when it comes to why they are so appreciative of the men and women who often come to their rescue. 'A day to honor and celebrate, they are over here quite a bit, helping out with residents. A day to really appreciate them,' said Katy Stanfield, Trezevant Community Liaison. For the tenth year, Trezevant has hosted this First Responders Appreciation Day. 'We always do the blessing of the badges, which is really special. They all went home with a little token for them to keep in their pocket to feel safe when they are out there,' said Stanfield. Firefighters, along with Police, including K9 officers like duno, mounted patrol officers, those who patrol on motorcycles, harbor patrol officers, and others, received well-deserved praise for the work they do day in and day out. 'I couldn't be more proud of the officers that serve this city,' said Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis. 'Our officers work hard, they do, every day.' 'Honoring our officers who graduated a class just last night, of 49 new officers. Really, really exciting,' said Memphis Mayor Paul Young. K9 officer Dono, by the way, is set to retire next month. We certainly wish him a happy retirement. When it comes to today's event, each first responder was also given a guardian angel they can carry in their pockets for protection.
