Axiom-4 launch: Space station leak concerns can further delay lift-off of mission carrying Indian Gaganyatri

The Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission, which is expected to carry four astronauts to the International Space Station, has already faced postponement four times.
Now, a new concern has emerged for India's Shubhanshu Shukla, former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, Poland's Sławosz Uznański and Hungary's Tibor Kapu. Shukla will be only the second Indian astronaut in space, after Rakesh Sharma's 1984 mission.
The launch of Axiom-4 has been postponed indefinitely owing to concerns of a leak reported from the International Space Station. Owing to the issue, NASA said Thursday that it would monitor the cabin pressure on the Russian side of the ISS before the mission is launched.
However, NASA assured that the seven astronauts already in the ISS were safe, adding that operations on the space station can not be affected following the leak.
The cabin pressure leak on the Zvezda service module is being handled by the country's space agency. However, recent repairs to resolve the issue led to 'a new pressure signature', according to NASA. However, no other details on the issue have been provided yet.
However, the delay of Axiom-4 opens up time for NASA and the Russian Space Agency to carry out evaluations and see whether there is a need for more repairs.
The three Russian astronauts who are currently on the space station had already inspected the walls of the service module, sealing a few areas and finding out the current leak rate.
The mission was postponed for the fourth time on Wednesday evening. It will carry a four-member crew on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to the ISS. This includes Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, who is the mission pilot, Peggy Whitson, the mission commander, and mission specialists Sławosz Uznański and Tibor Kapu.
The launch was initially scheduled for May 29. Speaking on the delay, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman V Narayanan said that a leakage had been detected in the propulsion bay.

The project is a joint effort involving the European Space Agency (ESA), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), and the KAU's College of Agriculture, Vellayani. The seeds selected for the space experiment include six high-yielding locally developed crop varieties: Jyothi, Uma (rice varieties); Kanakamani (horse gram); Thilakathara (sesame); Soorya (brinjal/eggplant); Vellayani Vijay (tomato). These seeds will undergo rigorous scientific evaluation in the unique microgravity environment of space, according to KAU sources. The primary goal of the study is to examine how space conditions, especially microgravity, affect germination, growth, and viability of food crop seeds. After spending time at the ISS, the seeds will be brought back to earth, planted in controlled environments, and monitored closely for changes in growth, resilience, and productivity. Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubanshu Shukla, one of the astronauts aboard the Axiom Mission 4, will play a supportive role in conducting the experiment in space. Among six Indian-led experiments selected for the mission, KAU's microgravity-focussed agricultural research stands out as a key scientific contribution, the KAU sources said.

One of them is the detection of the increasing air leak in the Zvezda service module in the International Space Station (ISS) by the NASA team. The experts from ISRO also acknowledged this and said that this is one of the other reasons for the delay that has been happening since May 2025. The ISRO and NASA teams said that the mission has been indefinitely postponed till things are corrected. ISRO has also stressed upon the need for in-situ repairs or replacements and better testing mechanisms before launching the 14- day long manned mission. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan said they were closely working to address the issues. 'Safety of the astronauts and the mission's integrity is our top priority,' Narayanan said The NASA team added that they are working with Roscosmos, Russia's Space Agency, to understand the air pressure and its current impact because of the gas leak. The NASA team noted that the increasing air leak was noted during their recent inspection ahead of the Ax-4 launch.

(Representational image: AI generated) New Delhi: India will soon test the Extended Trajectory-Long Duration Hypersonic Cruise Missile (ET-LDHCM) hypersonic missile. This missile can destroy enemy targets with a speed of 11000 km/hr and a range of 1500 km. it is equipped with scramjet engine and stealth technology. The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is soon going to test the ET-LDHCM as part of Project Vishnu. This hypersonic cruise missile has been built with completely indigenous technology and keeping in mind the objective of 'self-reliant India'. It is considered to be India's most advanced hypersonic technology. It can fly more than five times faster than the speed of sound. ET-LDHCM can fly at Mach 8 i.e. eight times faster than the speed of sound and at a speed of about 11,000 km/h. Its range is more than 1500 km. With this lethal range, this cruise missile can target the whole of Pakistan and most parts of China. That is, if any target in Pakistan has to be hit, then Indian fighter jets will not need to go to Pakistan or near the international border or LOC. This missile can be fired from Sukhoi or Rafale flying over Punjab or Delhi. This missile flies at low altitude. It will not move straight in the air but will move forward in a curved manner. With this speed and stealth feature, it will completely dodge the enemy air defense system. It will not be able to tracked by the enemy radar. The ET-LDHCM hypersonic missile can carry both nuclear and non-nuclear weapons. It is capable of carrying up to 1000-2000 kg of warheads. Under the completely Make in India programme, this missile has been built by DRDO in collaboration with private industry partners at Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex in Hyderabad.
