10-week closure of Blackheath rail tunnel set to start this weekend

Passengers in south east London are being asked to plan ahead for a 10-week closure of the Blackheath rail tunnel.
The closure, which starts on Sunday, May 18, and runs until Sunday, July 27, 2025, is due to £10 million worth of essential repairs by Network Rail.
The repairs are necessary for the 175-year-old Victorian-era structure, which is prone to leaks and water damage.
The tunnel's brickwork is affected by the freezing and thawing of rainwater, which filters through the ground into the tunnel.
While the tunnel is safe, the leaks and very wet conditions inside it damage track and electrical equipment, causing delays and speed restrictions.
The one-mile-long tunnel, which opened in 1849, has been the cause of around 1,000 minutes of delay to Southeastern passengers over the last year.
The closure coincides with Southeastern's timetable change, and customers are being reminded that some train times will change only for the period of the 10-week Blackheath tunnel closure.
Services that normally run through the tunnel will be diverted via other routes during the closure.
Due to the diversion, fewer Cannon Street services will call at St Johns and New Cross.
David Davidson, Network Rail's Kent route director, said: "We know there's never a good time to close the railway, and that changes to services for a 10-week period is a long time.
"These essential repairs will improve the safety and operation of the tunnel.
"We are carrying out the repairs over a series of 10-week closures because working in cramped and narrow tunnels is incredibly difficult.
"If traditional weekend working was used engineers would spend at least 50 per cent of a weekend bringing materials and plant in and out of the tunnel, leaving limited time for actual work.
"I want to thank customers for bearing with us during the closure, during which there are a number of alternative travel options.
"We are running extra services on the Woolwich line for connections to the Docklands Light Railway and the Elizabeth line, and there are also extra services on the Bexleyheath line.
"Rail tickets can also be used at no extra cost on some local bus routes, with full details available on the Southeastern website."
The repairs will involve replacing thousands of bricks and installing a new tunnel lining to stop water leaking into the tunnel.
Drainage systems will be rebuilt and essential track work carried out, including the removal of "wet beds" – waterlogged sections of track that cause bumpy train rides.
When the tunnel is repaired and water-damaged infrastructure replaced, passengers will benefit from fewer delays, fewer speed restrictions and improved reliability.
Around 3,500 passengers per week usually travel to stations between Lewisham and Abbey Wood through the Blackheath tunnel.
To minimise disruption and keep passengers moving when work is taking place, services from Dartford to Cannon Street (via Charlton and Lewisham) will run instead via Greenwich, stopping additionally at Westcombe Park, Maze Hill, Greenwich, and Deptford.
This offers the option to travel on the DLR from Greenwich to Lewisham, adding around seven minutes to journeys.
Other services will be diverted along the Bexleyheath line.
There will be no rail replacement buses but passengers will be able to travel on selected Transport for London bus routes at no extra cost.
A taxi can be provided for customers with accessible needs for travel between Blackheath and Charlton.

They have locations all over London, from Brixton to Camden, and St Paul's. I'm obsessed with Chinatown, so I didn't go in easily impressed. It's a casual spot, but not just a basic takeaway counter. The food comes in boxes, but there are some tables and counter seating available, and the décor is really sleek, with dark blue tiles and red neon signs. The first thing that stood out wasn't the food - it was the service. A staff member serving the customers clocked me looking for a table and quickly set one up just for me. Despite the lunchtime rush of office workers, the staff were warm and attentive. One customer was even greeted with a 'the usual?' - I had never seen a busy central London spot recognising a regular customer. The menu is small, which I always take as a good sign. No endless scroll of options here - just roast meats, rice or noodles, and a few dim sum classics, from baos to wontons. I went for their best-seller: roast duck on rice, with plum sauce on the side. To try a bit of everything, I also ordered char siu BBQ pork with Lo Mein noodles (egg noodles) and wontons. Each dish was around £14, so not the cheapest. But when I opened the boxes, I was shocked by the portion size - one dish easily could've fed two, and I couldn't even finish mine. The roast duck had beautifully crisp skin, and the rich meat paired incredibly with the sweet plum sauce. But the rice was underwhelming - sticky, plain, and the duck did not have enough sauce to drip on it and bring it to life. At that point, I was thinking - it's good, but 'best in London' good? Not yet. Then I tried the noodles, and everything changed. The egg noodles were thin and packed with flavour from the sweet char siu pork on top. There was a mystery sauce that added a savoury, salty depth without overwhelming the noodles. Jalapeños on the side gave it an unexpected kick, which spice lovers might adore. But what took it up a notch was a £1 extra ginger and spring onion sauce - I'd go back just for that dip. The wontons were another win - soft, tasty, and far from the greasy versions you often find at other Chinese spots in the city. It's that clean, non-oily finish packed with flavour that really sets Three Uncles apart. I've eaten in other Chinese restaurants that are on par with this one, but it's certainly delicious and worth a visit. And honestly, the woman taking orders might've been the best part of the whole experience. There's more on the menu I'd love to try next time - from lamb dumplings to a Char Siu Bao, and a two meats combo. I'll be back for round two, especially for those noodles. Temporary permission for a traveller site in a town in Nottinghamshire has been extended despite fears of flood risks in the area. Park View Caravan Park, in Tolney Lane in Newark, has been approved to continue to operate as a traveller site until June 2026 by Newark and Sherwood District Council. Plans to make the 1.5-acre site - equivalent to the size of a football pitch - which is being used by up to 15 caravans, permanent was submitted in January. The Environment Agency and Newark Town Council objected to the proposal as the site is on a flood plain, but residents had said they felt safe. The council's planning committee discussed the application on Thursday and recommended extending the site's temporary status instead of granting it permanent approval, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). Councillor Linda Dales backed the move, highlighting the shortage of traveller sites in the area at the meeting. "I hope that in a year's time that we have a Tolney Lane flood alleviation scheme under way," she said. "We don't have sufficient pitches [for travellers] available." However, councillor Keith Melton questioned the decision, saying: "It leaves me with an impression that allowing the application for just a year is a way of trying not to get the blame if something goes wrong. "It makes me feel uncomfortable. I would rather see it as a permanent solution with support from the Environment Agency." Councillor Adrian Amer urged more government funding to help flood risks in Newark, saying it was a "disaster waiting to happen", adding addressing flood risks along Tolney Lane was just "one part of the jigsaw puzzle". British holidaymakers to miss out on compensation after EU rule change

Britons will miss out on compensation for delayed flights after Brussels adopted a rule change following complaints from airlines. Payouts that were previously triggered by delays exceeding three hours will now only be made after four hours of holdups, European transport ministers agreed. The new regulation, hammered out following a decade of discussions and bargaining over passenger compensation, will apply to all services from EU countries to the UK. For the time being, travellers headed from Britain to the Continent will still qualify for a refund when flight delays hit the three-hour mark, unless they are flying with an EU-registered airline. While raising the compensation threshold, ministers also agreed to increase the minimum level of payment from €250 (£210) to €300 for shorter journeys and to €500 for those above 3,500km (2,175 miles). The original regulation, known as EU261, was passed in 2004 with the aim of ensuring that passengers received money and assistance in the event of flights being cancelled at short notice. Following Brexit, the UK adopted it into law so that the rights of travellers remained unchanged. However, the Government will now have to decide whether to adopt the amendments for outbound flights or stick with the original version. Taking no action might be welcomed by consumer groups but would have consequences for UK airlines, which would be at a disadvantage to their European rivals. It could also affect fares, with Ryanair having claimed that EU261 costs passengers £7 per ticket. Airlines for Europe, an industry group, had pressed for a higher compensation threshold, arguing that extending it to five hours – as originally proposed by the European Commission – would allow 70pc of flights that are cancelled to be rescued. It argued said that airlines inevitably scrapped flights once compensation was triggered, especially since the payouts involved were often higher than the ticket prices charged. It said a five-hour threshold would have made it more practical for carriers to fly in replacement aircraft so that more flights would get away, potentially benefiting 10m passengers a year. A spokesman said: 'Getting to their destination is the primary concern of passengers, even if it means getting to bed or arriving at their holiday resort late. But with a low cancellation threshold it makes more sense to call off the flight and take that hit.' Airlines have also railed against the fact that the compensation applies whether delays are caused by a crew shortage or technical issue that might be laid at their door, or by severe weather or air traffic control issues beyond their control. A number of extraordinary circumstances are expected to be added as part of revisions to 31 different air passenger rights. The revisions must still clear the European Parliament but are expected to become law in the bloc by the end of the year. The Department for Transport said the UK did not have to amend its legislation in line with any changes from the EU, and that any potential future reforms would require careful consideration on their merits, and be subject to public consultation.
