Siliguri to get international convention centre, IT & industrial parks: Mamata

Time of India19-05-2025

Kolkata: Siliguri would soon get an international convention centre, the third in the state after Kolkata and Digha, and land had been identified for the same, CM Mamata Banerjee said on Monday.
The state was also setting up an IT park and four industrial parks in north Bengal, Banerjee said during an interaction at the North Bengal Business Meet in Siliguri. The CM instructed Goutam Deb, the mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation, to prepare a plan to expand the Siliguri city area.
Banerjee said the convention centre was planned considering the importance of Siliguri as a regional business hub. She said a core group, to be chaired by chief secretary Manoj Pant, would be established for development of the proposed centre.
Banerjee asked Ambuja Neotia Group chairman Harsh Neotia, Luxmi Group MD Rudra Chatterjee and Techno India chairman Satyam Roychowdhury, who were present at the business meet, to be part of the group.
"We have identified 10 acres of land for the project. Goutam Deb has helped us in identifying the land, which is near Uttarayan. There was land near Bagdogra airport as well, but that is a 4-acre plot. It might not be sufficient," the CM said.
The Siliguri convention centre would have a hotel as well, like those in Kolkata and Digha, she added.
Banerjee inaugurated the Webel IT park in north Bengal, which would attract an investment of Rs 100 crore. This would be an AI-enabled data centre cluster, the first of its kind in north Bengal.
She also inaugurated four industrial parks for MSMEs in different parts of north Bengal. The West Bengal Small Industries Development Corporation would implement these parks at an investment of Rs 80 crore.
The total area would be 123.8 acres and these parks would employ more than 5,000 people.
The CM inaugurated a skywalk at Jalpesh Shiva Temple in Jalpaiguri, the third skywalk in a temple in the state after Dakshineswar and Kalighat. She also announced six Volvo bus services from six north Bengal districts to Digha for those who wanted to visit the Jagannath temple.
Banerjee directed municipalities to stop excessive charges collected under the guise of trade licences.
State power minister Aroop Biswas said the power demand in north Bengal had gone up from 840 MW in 2011 to 3,500 MW now, which was testimony to the region's development.
Naresh Agarwal, vice-president of Credai West Bengal, later said Darjeeling district would see construction of 15 hotels worth Rs 1,175 crore. He added that Rs 9,000 crore would be invested in different industrial parks in north Bengal.
CM for 5-star hotel near Bagdogra airport
CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday proposed the setting up of a five-star hotel near Bagdogra airport. There was a 4-acre land which could be used for the purpose as there was no good hotel near the airport, she said. Currently, 36 pairs of flights operate daily from Bagdogra.

AAP slams demolition in Bhoomiheen camp, DDA defends action

New Delhi: A demolition drive was held at the Bhoomiheen camp in Kalkaji amid a heavy deployment of cops on Wednesday morning. Calling the demolition a "deliberate assault on the marginalised", AAP alleged that BJP govt defied its own chief minister Rekha Gupta's promise of "not a single jhuggi will be touched". Local MLA Atishi alleged that BJP was betraying the poor. "Just three days ago, CM Rekha Gupta claimed that not a single jhuggi would be demolished and no poor person's home would be touched. Yet, under the cover of heavy police presence, the entire Bhoomiheen camp was razed to the ground, displacing thousands of people and leaving them homeless on the streets," she said. Delhi Development Authority said the demolition was against ineligible dwellers encroaching upon five acres of its land. It stated that under the in situ slum rehabilitation project at Kalkaji, after applying the eligibility criteria as per DUSIB's rehabilitation and relocation policy of 2015, approved by the then Delhi govt, some residents were found to be eligible for rehabilitation and some were not. "As per policy, the households whose names appear in one of the voter lists of the years 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 (prior to 01.01.2015) and possess one of the 12 documents prescribed in the policy, like a passport, electricity bill, driving licence, or passbook issued by a public sector bank or post office, are eligible for alternative accommodation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo Their names should also appear in the voter list of the year of the survey," it added. Households using the jhuggi for commercial purposes, those with residents under 18 years of age, and those living on the upper floor without a separate ration card prior to 01.01.2015 do not qualify for alternative allotment, DDA further explained. A total of 1,862 eligible households of Bhoomiheen camp were rehabilitated to EWS flats in Kalkaji Extension between Nov 2022 and May 2023, said DDA. The project is located on a land of 3 hectares with a total construction cost of Rs 345 crore, excluding land cost. These flats have been given at a highly subsidised price of Rs 1.1 lakh as beneficiary contribution, it added. The ineligible dwellers were given an opportunity to file an appeal before the Appellate Authority, the land-owning agency said. DDA further claimed that most of the houses demolished on Wednesday were lying vacant. "344 jhuggi structures existed which were mostly vacant. There is no stay against demolition of these jhuggi structures," it said in a statement. BJP did not comment on the development.

Will implement Centre's schemes in Delhi: Shivraj Singh Chouhan to farmers

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Wednesday met farmers from different parts of Delhi in Tigipur village and assured them that all of the Centre's agricultural welfare schemes will be implemented in the Capital soon. Addressing a gathering of farmers from the city's rural belts, Chouhan said, 'Delhi's farmers were left out of the central government's schemes earlier due to the previous government. The state government has to send us a proposal… I have spoken to the Chief Minister, and she will soon send a proposal to ensure these are rolled out.' Chouhan is on the last leg of his 15-day programme, Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, under which he has travelled to 14 states already and is interacting with farmers directly. 'There is great demand for fruits and vegetables in Delhi. If agriculture is strengthened here, it will not just benefit the city but also ensure India's economy grows — because even today, half our population is dependent on farming,' he said. Farmers present at the event raised several concerns, including high electricity costs, lack of subsidies, and no retail outlets for fertilisers. 'We don't get any subsidy. And if there is, the process is too complicated to understand,' said a farmer. Another noted that tractors with Delhi registration numbers are charged commercial tax, which increases their input cost, so farmers have to purchase tractors from neighbouring Haryana. A mushroom farmer from Tigipur, cultivating on just two acres, said he spends Rs 40 lakh a year and makes Rs 10-15 lakh in profit by selling directly to Azadpur mandi and contracting with factories. A strawberry grower, with 10 acres under cultivation, said he earns Rs 12-13 lakh per acre. 'We plant strawberries in October and inter-crop it with sweet corn and capsicum later. We sell to Reliance, BigBasket and local mandis,' he said. 'There are some farmers who are doing very well and earning a lot. We also need to learn their best practices' Chouhan said at the chaupal. The cost of inputs remains a problem for farmers of the national capital. 'Agriculture doesn't exist in Delhi for the government. So, our electricity is charged at commercial rates, which is extremely high,' said another farmer. 'There is also no IFFCO shop in Delhi from where we can buy fertilisers,' another said. Chouhan said the government is planning to adopt a 'One Nation, One Farm, One Team' approach. 'Policies must not be made sitting in offices. The agriculture department, research scientists, and agricultural universities must go to villages and speak to farmers. Only then can we find solutions together,' he added. Prayagraj's Munj jewellery catches fancy of women

Prayagraj: Demand for Munj jewellery is rising as city-based women's self-help groups are receiving bulk orders both online and offline. With Munj products being selected as the One District One Product of Prayagraj, women associated with different self-help groups, apart from making traditional products like puja baskets, puja aasans, Ganga Jal bags, and flower pots, are now designing and shaping Munj jewellery. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Moreover, the rising demand for Munj products, particularly jewellery, has also brought changes in the lives of women, making them self-reliant. Assistant Director (Handicraft) Tanya Banerjee said, "Women making Munj products associated with the Tourist Craft Village in Maheva are being trained to make Munj jewellery by the designers of National Institute of Fashion Designing. After this training, these women are now making Munj jewellery instead of traditional products, which have a good demand online and offline within the country." After receiving training, these craftswomen targeted the ritual of making jewellery for Haldi ceremony, which has now become a trend in Hindu families at the time of marriage. Banerjee, meanwhile, said that the Bindi of the Haldi ritual, being prepared from Munj takes less time and with fewer resources. Women here are working in groups of 20 each. Handicraft artist Saumya says that due to being eco-friendly and sustainable, there is a good demand for Munj jewellery products online and offline. After making Munj products, the biggest challenge was to provide an accessible market for these products. Banerjee, however, claimed, "For this, a tourist craft village was set up in Maheva village of Naini on Sept 13 last year at a cost of Rs 5 crore. Here, these handicraftsmen got a place where they are displaying and selling their products." However, in the coming days, under the concept of the home market, there is a plan to provide them with sale stalls at their homes. Munj craftsmen will be allotted these on the basis of rotation.
