Forum: Act on hazards for cyclists arising from T5 construction work
I refer to the article 'PM Wong breaks ground on Changi Airport T5; all SIA, Scoot flights to move there when it opens' (May 14).
While I wholeheartedly support the expansion of Singapore's airport, the increased construction activity along Tanah Merah Coast Road has dramatically raised the risk of accidents for those of us using the dedicated cycling lane there.
For cyclists who use Tanah Merah Coast Road regularly, the recent rise in the number of heavy vehicles accessing construction sites is worrying.
Heavily laden trucks that transport building materials often push the speed limits to meet their schedules. In doing so, debris is scattered along the road, posing a danger to all traffic. Unfortunately, this debris – sand, gravel, crushed stone, wooden planks, chunks of metal – quickly finds its way into the narrow confines of the cycling lane, creating especially hazardous conditions.
Recently, I was thrown off my bike when I hit a rock the size of my fist, resulting in a very painful fractured pelvis.
As there are more heavy vehicles using Tanah Merah Coast Road, there have also been more drivers stopping illegally on the cycling lane. Many are waiting their turn to enter the construction sites, despite large signs forbidding them from doing so. Infuriatingly, the drivers often use this downtime to clean their vehicles, hammering hardened cement from the chassis, or chunks of mud from the wheels, further adding to the debris hazard.
The authorities need to act quickly to help reduce the number of accidents and injuries. Enforcement efforts are needed to deter heavy goods vehicles from speeding or stopping in the cycling lane, and road-sweeping machines used to maintain the lanes should be employed more frequently in tandem with the increase in construction activity.
I sincerely hope the relevant agencies will make a concerted effort to improve conditions and prevent accidents.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz Musk's father says Trump dispute triggered by intense stress, has to end MOSCOW - The dispute between Donald Trump and Elon Musk was triggered by months of intense stress on both sides, and the public battle between the U.S. president and the billionaire donor needs to stop, Musk's father told Reuters on Monday. Trump and Musk began exchanging insults last week on social media, with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO describing the president's sweeping tax and spending bill as a "disgusting abomination". Asked whether he thought his son had made a mistake by engaging in a public clash with the president, Errol Musk said people were sometimes unable to think as clearly as they should "in the heat of the moment." "They've had five months of intense stress," Musk told Reuters at a conference in Moscow organised by conservative Russian tycoons. "With all the opposition cleared and two people left in the arena, all they have ever done is get rid of everything and now they are trying to get rid of each other - well that has to stop." Asked how it would end, he said: "Oh, it will end on a good note - very soon." Neither the White House nor Musk could be reached for comment outside normal U.S. business hours. Trump said on Saturday his relationship with Musk was over and that there would be "serious consequences" if the world's richest man decided to fund U.S. Democrats running against Republicans who vote for the tax and spending bill. Musk bankrolled a large part of Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. Trump named Musk to head an effort to downsize the federal workforce and slash spending. Musk's father told reporters he was standing by his son. "Elon is sticking to his principles but you cannot always stick to your principles in the real world," Musk's father said. "Sometimes you have to give and take." Speaking beside sanctioned Russian businessman Konstantin Malofeyev, Musk's father praised President Vladimir Putin as a "very stable and pleasant man." He accused "fake media" in the West of projecting "complete nonsense" about Russia and for casting it as an enemy. Rallying-Ogier leads after tough first day in Sardinia
Toyota's Sebastien Ogier led Rally Italy in Sardinia on Friday after surging from third to first on the final stage of the first full day of action after rivals hit trouble. Hyundai's reigning world champion Thierry Neuville retired on stage five after taking the lead on the fourth stage of the Olbia-based rally in northern Sardinia and then hitting an earth bank. Adrien Fourmaux was in second place, 2.1 seconds behind eight-times world champion Ogier, with Hyundai teammate Ott Tanak third on the gravel tracks. Last year's winner Tanak completed the leg with a damaged shock absorber and 5.2 seconds behind Fourmaux. Toyota's double world champion Kalle Rovanpera was down in fifth place with championship-leading teammate Elfyn Evans sixth after being the first driver to set out and effectively sweeping the road. "It's been a good day, for sure," commented Ogier. "I've done everything I could today, so I'm happy with that." M-Sport Ford's Martins Sesks rolled out while teammates Josh McErlean and Gregoire Munster retired with suspension damage in the morning action on the same new Telti-Calangianus-Berchidda stage that caught out Neuville later. M-Sport expected at least two of the three to resume on Saturday. "That stage where all the drama happened was very tricky,' said Ogier. "It's super narrow and extremely fast. It's always a surprise to see that many incidents, but it can happen very easily there." The rally, round six of the championship, continues on Saturday with more than 120km of timed action.
