Hand over GBV culprits, murdered teenager's family asks community
The family of KwaZulu-Natal teenager Xolile Mpanza, 17, who was found deceased in a sugar cane plantation near Dokodweni on the north coast, is calling on communities to help police arrest the culprits in her case and that of other femicide cases.
The teenager's uncle, Jabulani Mpanza, spoke publicly after being visited by premier Thami Ntuli.
'It's tense. It's been difficult and we have barely been able to sleep after the grim discovery. This is something we would see happening to other people. I know no family deserves to be in such agony. This is painful,' said Mpanza.
He said the family had hoped for a bright future for the teenager.
Ntuli called on the community of Dokodweni to come forward with information which would help the investigation.
'Anyone who may have the information must share with the police on 08000 10111,' he said.
Ntuli said in another incident in the same area, it is reported two suspects raped a 17-year-old girl who has been admitted to hospital due to her injuries.
'The only way we can fight the scourge of gender-based violence is for us to stand up and work with the police.'

Manhunt continues for third suspect in Olorato Mongale murder case
Police are still searching for Bongani Mthimkhulu, the remaining suspect implicated in the murder of 30-year-old student Olorato Mongale. Last week, Mthimkhulu was identified as the third suspect in the case along with Philangenkosi Makhanya and Fezile Ngubane. Makhanya was killed during an altercation with police in KZN on Friday, while Ngubane was cleared by police at the weekend. Speaking to Sowetan, national police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said Mthimkhulu had not yet been found. 'The police are still searching,' she said. Last week Mathe revealed that Makhanya and Mthimkhulu had been arrested for kidnapping and robbery in Brakpan in April, but were released on bail. ' On April 20 this year, we arrested them [Makhanya and Mthimkhulu] on a charge of kidnapping and robbery in the Brakpan area, where a vigilant police officer was conducting his regular patrols. He came across a suspicious-looking vehicle, a VW Polo and when he confronted the suspects, he found that they had just kidnapped a woman and robbed her.

Worker killed at Harmony's Joel mine in the Free State
A worker was killed in a fall of ground accident at Harmony Gold's Joel mine in Free State on Wednesday. The company said all relevant authorities, family members and colleagues had been informed. It said it was devastated by another loss of life. 'Our safety strategy and culture include both systemic and humanistic factors and controls. These controls are designed to avoid incidents, protect our employees and have to be adhered to at all times. No working area will be accessed unless it has been declared safe,' said Beyers Nel, Harmony CEO. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) said this was the 11th fatality at Harmony this year, bringing the total fatalities in the South African mining industry to 25. 'Eleven fatalities point directly to the company's failure to provide conditions that are safe for the operation to take place,' Amcu said. The union added that if Harmony dodges analysing organisational failures and blames the deaths on the behaviour of employees, it is likely they will experience more injuries and disasters. Harmony said Thursday has been declared a day of safety across all Harmony's South African operations to engage with the company's employees and stakeholders and to reflect on the company's safety practices at each of its mines. DNA analysis confirms remains are of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and partner
DNA analysis of human remains found in Rust De Winter in Limpopo on May 8 has positively linked them to those of journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu and Zodwa Mdhluli. The couple was reported missing on February 18. 'The human remains were analysed and matched with the reference sample of the biological relatives of the deceased,' police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said in a statement on Wednesday. Police have already notified both families. Four suspects arrested in this case are currently appearing before the KwaMhlanga magistrate's court on various charges including kidnapping, house robbery and possession of stolen property. The African Media and Communicators Forum (AMCF) and the National Press Club (NPC) welcomed the latest developments. They said they did not come as a surprise because the location where the remains were discovered was pointed out by the suspects after their arrest. They said this milestone would lead the families closer to the truth. 'We wish to convey our gratitude to the SAPS for keeping to their promise that in four weeks the results would be available. 'We confirm that the families in Ga-Rankuwa [Ndlovu] and Thembisa [Mdhluli] were visited earlier this evening by the police where the results were disclosed to them,' said Elijah Mhlanga, chairperson of the AMCF. He said the families were relieved and could now begin with plans for funerals. Acting chairperson of the NPC Antoinette Slabbert said it had been an agonising wait for the results after months of grief following the mysterious disappearance of the couple. 'We hope that the evidence will also serve in court in the murder charges against the accused,' Slabbert said.
