Is air travel about to get greener? Our study shows how ‘coopetition' is helping aircraft companies tackle sustainability
Although air transport contributes a small proportion to global greenhouse gas emissions (approximately 3.5%), the expected growth in traffic compels the industry to minimize its environmental footprint. The European Commission aims to have carbon neutrality in 2050. To help reach this goal, the industry needs to change its practices.
However, making a greener aircraft is no small feat. No single company possesses all the required resources and expertise. There is a need to bring minds together to accomplish this task. Aircraft manufacturing competitors are best positioned to accomplish it.

Cooperating with competitors is commonly referred to as coopetition. The concept is well recognized in strategic management and has been extensively studied since its popularization in the early 2000s by Swedish researchers Maria Bengtsson and Soren Kock.
Coopetition can bring greater benefits than pure cooperation or competition. Competitors hold complementary and compatible resources that facilitate knowledge sharing and cooperation. However, cooperating with rivals is not a natural instinct. In fact, it introduces greater risks, because firms that are fierce market competitors could be tempted to behave opportunistically. While cooperating to create a common pie, they are also competing for the biggest share of it.
While coopetition can yield greater benefits, such as faster innovation, than strategies focused solely on competition, it also introduces greater risks, especially when multiple competitors are involved. By increasing the number of competitors, firms may have access to more resources. However, there is also a higher risk of the pursuit of self-interest, with guile. With more companies involved, competitors may be tempted and find it easier to conceal attempts to acquire more than an agreed share of knowledge and resources.
So, what is the secret to successful collaboration with rivals? That is what we are trying to find out. Our study focuses on how companies can successfully manage multilateral coopetition on a large scale by examining the case of CleanAviation, an initiative consisting of eleven competitors including industry players like Airbus, Safran and Dassault, as well as the European Commission. Our study involved 34 semi-structured interviews with project managers and directors and a review of archival documents to understand how the competitors managed their cooperation.
Since 2008, CleanAviation (originally CleanSky) has been at the forefront of developing innovations aimed at reducing environmental impacts. Its players are brought together in a governing board, which includes representatives of the founding members. They make decisions on the strategic management of CleanAviation by, for example, deciding on technological development priorities and how to achieve them.
The collaboration among the 11 manufacturers in the initiative allows for access to a broad array of resources, enhancing innovation. With over 100 key technologies and 30 prototypes developed, CleanAviation has made significant contributions to creating environmentally friendly European aircraft. One example is Airbus and Saab's effort to develop the Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft, an advanced plane with wings that are designed to adapt to varying flight conditions, thus optimizing performance. The effort aims at reducing fuel consumption and emissions in future aircraft.
However, in our study, these companies reported difficulties in knowledge sharing that at times slowed the technology development process and created tensions. For example, while collaboration through knowledge sharing was necessary to ensure technological compatibility, due to uncertainty about how to collaborate safely, companies restricted their interactions and limited knowledge sharing by protecting important information.
Our analysis suggests that balancing these benefits and risks requires specific management approaches. We identified two critical levels: the governing board level and the operational level.
CleanAviation's governing board strategizes about the management of the intiative. It drafted a joint technology roadmap to outline necessary technological advancements and implementation strategies. At this level, shared governance between the European Commission and the competitors, managed through rotating leadership, helps prevent power concentration and reduces tensions. Decisions within the board are made by consensus.
On the operational level, managing coopetition involves separating activities to compartmentalize daily knowledge sharing, ensuring each party's contributions and benefits are protected. In our study, we found that even though the separation of activities was essential, connection and interaction through knowledge sharing was also needed. To help this effort, individuals called liaisons officers acted at the interfaces to push competing companies to cooperate. They helped manage the coopetitive paradox by acting as knowledge arbitrators between competitors when discrepancies occur.
Finally, our results also confirm the indispensability of implementing both contractual and relational governance mechanisms to deal with coopetition. Contractual governance refers to the use of contracts, documents and other reporting or knowledge-sharing guidelines; relational governance refers to social interaction among companies through the liaisons officers.
Thanks to these management approaches, the manufacturers have reported several successful green innovations. For example, the Open Rotor programme, created by Safran in partnership with Airbus and other companies, has developed a new aircraft engine that reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20%, representing a significant cost reduction and environmental benefit.
As cooperation among competitors becomes more common, especially in tackling significant challenges like climate change, managing it will be crucial. The results of our study can apply to settings beyond the aircraft industry. The Covid-19 crisis has highlighted the need for firms to adopt more environmentally sustainable business practices, but achieving sustainability is a complex challenge that no company can tackle alone. That's why companies need to join forces to find collective solutions.

Bulgaria is close to joining the euro currency but faces disinformation and fear
SOFIA, Bulgaria -- Bulgaria is close to realizing its decades-old goal of joining the euro currency union and deepening ties with the more prosperous countries of Western Europe. But the government faces a populist backlash against the shared currency on the eve of a key decision by European Union authorities. Fears of inflation, poverty and the unknown are mingling with disinformation spread on social media that aims to turn people against the euro. The discontent tracks with increased support for populist and anti-EU parties across Europe, which is exploited by nationalist and pro-Russian politicians in a country that remains one of Europe's poorest and most afflicted with corruption. 'Adopting the euro will make us feel the threshold of poverty. After all, prices will be in euros,' said 78-year-old retiree Tanya Ignatova. 'Bulgaria is not ready for the euro. Someday we may be ready, but not now," said another retiree, Mario Georgiev. Several thousand people rallied against the euro in the capital on Saturday, urging a referendum on whether to transition from the lev currency to the euro. The head of the pro-Russian Varazhdane party, Kostadin Kostadinov, told the crowd that 'Bulgaria has risen and declared: Freedom, we choose the Bulgarian lev!' Others in Bulgaria say the country already benefits from EU membership and it does not matter what the currency is. "We have inflation now and we will have it in the future,' said 26-year-old Konstantin Bozhinov. Aiming at deepening European integration amid growing geopolitical tensions, the government is pressing ahead. It has asked for a review of whether it meets the requirements of low inflation, sound government finances and legal conformity to EU institutions. On Wednesday, the European Commission will announce the results. If the commission gives a green light, other member states will decide on Bulgaria's candidacy in the coming weeks. At the last review in 2022, Bulgaria failed on the inflation requirement. Inflation has since fallen. President Rumen Radev has encouraged the anti-euro voices by proposing a referendum on the currency, citing public concerns over inflation and purchasing power. That followed a protest in February that saw the offices of the EU's executive commission in Sofia spattered with red paint and its entrance set on fire. The president's proposal was turned down by the pro-European majority in parliament, which accused Radev of acting in favor of Russia with his last-minute attempt to sabotage the euro adoption. According to the EU's multi-country Eurobarometer survey released last week, 50% of Bulgarians are against the adoption of the euro, while 43% are in favor. In contrast, trust in the euro continues to grow across the rest of the EU. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007. It has been plagued by political instability and corruption that have fueled euroscepticism among its 6.4 million citizens. Analysts say disinformation campaigns from abroad have fed fears of economic changes that could bring more poverty. Scores of false claims by opponents of the eurozone have been published on social networks. One claim says the EU plans to take away people's savings if they fail to spend them within a certain period. Another claims that plans to introduce a digital version of the euro are part of a plan to control everyone. 'There is a powerful brainwashing of the average Bulgarian. Illusory fears are being spread, lies are being told wholesale, unscrupulously and brazenly," said Ognyan Minchev, director of the Institute for Regional and International Studies in Sofia. Economists say joining the euro will not bring massive change to Bulgaria's economy in the short run. That's because the government has pegged the currency to the euro by law, at a fixed rate of 1 lev for every 51 euro cents. Joining the euro can bring lower borrowing costs, greater ease in comparing domestic and foreign prices and no need to exchange money when vacationing in another euro country. More than that, it's a sign of integration into the EU and its large economy. Members get a seat on the European Central Bank's interest rate-setting committee. Countries agree to join the euro when they join the EU, but so far 20 of 27 members have taken the step. Croatia was the last to join in 2023. Bulgaria's government has very little debt, at 24.1% of GDP — the second lowest in the EU and well below the 60% level in euro membership criteria. That's a sharp contrast to its neighbor, Greece, which entered the euro in 1999 with high debt that was concealed through complex financial transactions. Greece's broken finances eventually triggered a eurozone-wide crisis. Bulgaria's government has been 'fiscally super conservative ... the risk of Bulgaria becoming a fiscal risk to the eurozone is essentially zero,' said Zsolt Darvas, senior fellow at the Bruegel think tank in Brussels. Fears of inflation are not entirely without basis. Experience in other countries shows that 'whenever there is a changeover from national currency to the euro, there is often a minor inflation effect, but it's typically less than 1%,' said Darvas

Deutsche Bank lifts S&P 500 year-end target amid Wall Street upgrade wave
(Reuters) - Deutsche Bank has raised its year-end target for the S&P 500 to 6,550 from 6,150, citing lower tariff-related earnings drag and a resilient economy, in a move that comes amid a broader wave of target upgrades by major Wall Street brokerages. This follows similar moves by Goldman Sachs and UBS Global Wealth Management, which raised their forecasts in May, with RBC Capital Markets joining the trend on Monday. "We now see the tariff drag at only about one-third of what we previously penciled in," Deutsche Bank strategists led by Binky Chadha wrote in a note on Monday. The new target is 10.35% above the S&P 500 index's last close of 5,935.94. The S&P 500 posted its strongest monthly gain since November 2023 in May, boosted by U.S. President Donald Trump's softer stance on tariffs, strong corporate earnings, and tame inflation data that helped markets recover from April's decline. Still, the European brokerage warned that the rally could be volatile, with potential pullbacks driven by renewed trade tensions. "We expect the rally to be punctuated by sharp pullbacks on repeated cycles of escalation and de-escalation on trade policy", the brokerage said. Deutsche also increased the estimate for the index's earnings per share to $267 from $240.
