TSA retires O'Hare Airport's explosive-sniffing dog Panka after her 6 years of service
Most wish that we could retire after just six years on the job, but most would also agree that 8-year-old Panka had a remarkably full and successful career working with the Transportation Security Administration to sniff out explosives at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
Panka, an 8-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, has worked alongside handler Pete Kligerman for a little over a half decade, and on Wednesday was treated to a surprise retirement "ceremony."
The canine was showered with tennis balls and other toys as a reward for a job well done.

"After years of providing an additional layer of security and protecting countless passengers transiting through O'Hare, Panka has earned her retirement," TSA Illinois Federal Security Director Jim Spriggs said. "Panka has represented us well and is a favorite of travelers. Best wishes to her, and thanks to Pete and his family, who will continue to care for her in the years to come."
The agency said these canine workers are just one of the layers of security they use, and "supplement TSA's efforts to keep travelers safe and secure."

At the same time, officials at O'Hare are touting the success of new cameras that can recognize a person's face and verify their identity. They're being used for U.S. citizens returning to the country after foreign travel.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection claims the cameras have cut wait times by nearly 75%, and also reduced the number of missed flight connections for passengers on United and American Airlines by roughly the same proportion.

Pilot program in the works for a public Red Rocks shuttle in the Denver metro area

Officials in Denver and Jefferson County are building on an idea first shared by the environmental advocacy group Green Latinos to develop some form of public transportation. Currently, RTD's W line can take riders from downtown Denver all the way to the Jefferson County government center in Golden. But that's the end of the road for the line. The plan being considered is to use a shuttle -- either vans or buses -- to take light rail passengers from Golden to Red Rocks as well as several other outdoor attractions. Jefferson County Commissioner Andy Kerr referred to it as "West tracks" and would include a stop at Dinosaur Ridge, mountain biking and hiking areas as well as Red Rocks. Kerry said the hope is to do a test run in the fall. "We were really hoping to get something off the ground this summer but a lot of our partners -- Jefferson County, Denver Parks have offered up some money for this summer -- it might just be a weekend where we run the shuttle from here from the Jeffco government center and try it out. Hopefully people come and use it and we can work out some kinks so that next summer we could as early as the Memorial Day weekend really hit the ground running and maybe have this up and running," Kerr said. RTD says Jefferson County did submit an application for their partnership program, which allocates grant money for a service that would have stops at Red Rocks, but they say the proposal would not accommodate evening concerts. Kerr says currently the W Line doesn't operate late into the evening and for purposes of the pilot program they wanted to avoid having trying to get RTD to adjust service hours.

Canadians bypassing the U.S.? Not the case at Travel Leaders Network event
LAS VEGAS -- Despite many Canadians boycotting travel to the U.S. as a response to the tariffs implemented by the Trump administration, Canadian members of Travel Leaders Network (TLN) had a strong showing at its annual Edge conference, ongoing this week at Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. According to Christine James, vice president of Canada for TLN, about 100 Canadians usually attend Edge. This year, 154 are in attendance. "When the tariff situation came into play, we did see some fall off, but at the same time we had a lot of members that were still on a waitlist that we were able to backfill," James said. She added that those who did choose to come reported seeing the value of the investment in their business and the learning opportunities presented to them. Where Canadians are vacationing Travel Leaders Network members in Canada are still seeing growth this year, James said. While they do have clients unwilling to come to the U.S., they aren't canceling trips. Instead, they are shifting. Canadian members have been selling a lot of Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean. "At this point, anyway, we're not seeing loss of revenue," she said. "We're seeing a shift."
