"Why Are You Thinking About Next Youngster?": KL Rahul Hits Out At 'Decision Makers'
Team India has rolled into a new chapter in Test cricket, with Shubman Gill being made the side's captain, while Rishabh Pant takes the role of his deputy. The transition comes after the retirement of stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. The Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee, in a press conference on Saturday, made it clear that the focus is to groom the next generation. Though another veteran India batter, KL Rahul, is part of the Test squad, he isn't entirely onboard with the rush to groom the next generation of talent.
In a conversation with Nasser Hussain on Sky Cricket, Rahul shared the pressure of having to prove himself time and again. While the wicket-keeper batter categorically said that he doesn't mind doing that, as it's part of an athlete's life, things get tough when the 'decision-makers' forget what a player did in recent outings.
"I don't mind having to prove himself. I think that's how sports go. You never settle. And it's just not for me, it's for every person who plays a sport. You have to always perform, every tournament, every game, and that's the challenge of being an international athlete. I see the same amount of competition for English, Aussie, or Kiwi players," Rahul said.
"That's not what's hard. The hard part is that people who make decisions seem to forget what a player has done in the recent tournament. That has been a little bit of a challenge for me," he further said.
As Rahul's Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign concludes, he isn't entirely sure when India's next ODI assignment is going to be. The 33-year-old feels extensive gaps between assignments trigger talks of 'groom the next generation' out of the blue, much to his disappointment.
"I don't know when the next ODI series will be, but by the time the English summer gets over, which could be about five (three) months, you see people writing and commenting that we need to look for players for the 2027 World Cup or the next World Cup after. And sometimes, as a player, you sit back and think, 'why should there be a change when something's working for you? Why are you thinking about the next youngster already?'" Rahul said.
"But I don't think it's a challenge for me. It's for everybody else."

If India are to do well in the upcoming Test series against England, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will have a big role to play in it. His recent form has not been great but Pant, as a wicket-keeper and as a middle-order batter, will be closely watched. Off the 12 games, he played nine on English soil, scoring 556 runs at an average of 32.70. Pant, however, had struggled the last time India played Tests – in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In Australia, he played all five Tests and scored 255 runs at an average of 28.33, including just one half-century. Team India touched down in the UK on June 7 and had wasted no time as they dived straight into intense training sessions, kickstarting their preparations for the five-Test showdown that marks the beginning of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both teams. This series also signals the start of a new era for Indian cricket, following the Test retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Led by Shubman Gill, India will face England in the first Test of the five-match series at the Headingley Cricket Ground from June 20. The second Test will be played at Edgbaston from July 2 while the third Test will be held at the iconic Lord's beginning on July 10. Both India and England will later travel to Manchester for the fourth Test to be played at Old Trafford from July 23, before concluding the Test series at the Kennington Oval in London starting on July 31. India are aiming to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007.

Top Indian shooter Sift Kaur Samra tackled a strong field with aplomb to claim the bronze medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event at the ISSF World Cup on Thursday. The 23-year-old Samra, who holds the current world record in women's 50 metre rifle three positions event which she had set while winning the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games, shot 453.1 in the eight-player final. Norway's Jeanette Hegg Duestad won the gold medal with 466.9, while Emely Jaeggi of Switzerland bagged silver with 464.8. In the men's 10m air rifle competition, Ankush Jadhav narrowly missed out on the finals and settled for the 11th place in the qualifications with a total of 631.7 across six series. Umamahesh Maddineni ended seventh with 632.3 but was not eligible to enter the final as he was shooting for ranking points only (RPO). Arjun Babuta was placed 43rd with 629.1, while Sandeep Singh was 53rd with 628.3. Earlier in the day, Emely was placed ninth in the qualifications of the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event with 590, but made the final as two markswomen among the top eight were shooting for ranking points. Samra, who is from Faridkot, Punjab, was second in the qualifications with a total of 592 across the three stages of kneeling, prone and standing. She won a gold medal at the World Cup in Buenos Aires earlier this year, starting the season on a rousing note after a disappointing campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics. France's Agathe Cecile Camille Girard, who also shot 592, topped the qualifications on the account of having more inner 10 (Xs), while Switzerland's Audrey Gogniat was placed third heading into the finals. The other Indians in the competition, Ashi Chouksey finished 11th with 589, while Anjum Moudgil ended 27th with 586. Shriyanka Sadangi was 53rd with 582, and Nischal was further down at 60th position.
