Virginia campground to pay two families $750,000 for racial discrimination against Black camper

NBC News20-03-2025

Two families have been awarded $750,000 after a jury ruled that the owner of a Virginia campground discriminated against them because one of the campers was a Black man.
Friends Amanda Mills and Angela Smith had planned a joint family camping trip to Lazy Cove Campground in June 2020. Smith, who is white, brought her husband, Damien Smith, who is Black, and their 8-year-old son to join Mills' family for the getaway.
Their plans took a turn after receiving a phone call from the campground's owner, Regina Turner. According to a complaint filed with the Virginia Fair Housing Board — first reported by The Washington Post — Turner told Mills, 'You didn't tell me that your friend's husband is Black.'
'Had I known, I wouldn't have rented the lot to them. I saw the son, but I figured everyone makes a mistake,' she said, according to the complaint.
According to court documents, Turner allegedly said to another tenant on the campground that she wanted to wait until their lease ended instead of moving forward with eviction.
'I can't make them move now because if I give both of them moving notices now, they could take my park from me. I'm smart, you know, and I've got to use my head,' according to court documents.
The Virginia Attorney General's Office and the Virginia Fair Housing Board filed a civil suit against Turner on one count of refusing to rent and two counts of discrimination. The suit resulted in both families being awarded $100,000 each for their losses.
The jury also awarded an additional $550,000 in punitive damages, according to a news release from Attorney General Jason Miyares on Thursday.
'It was like a sigh of relief, but at the same time, I'm still angry because we never should have had to go through this,' Damien Smith told the Post. 'It was 2020 at the time, and somehow we're still getting judged by the color of our skin versus the kind of person we are.'
Attorney General Miyares said his office is 'pleased by the jury's verdict, and I'm immensely proud of my Civil Rights Unit. The people of Franklin County have spoken: Smith Mountain Lake is for everyone.'
The $750,000 verdict more than triples the state's former largest fair housing victory, which was a $200,000 judgment in a 2011 sexual harassment case, Miyares said.
Holland Perdue, Turner's lawyer and mayor of Rocky Mount, filed a motion to set aside the jury's verdict and the next court appearance is scheduled for April 8, according to the Post.
Perdue did not immediately respond to an NBC News request for comment. Turner told the Post she never evicted the families and, despite her late husband refusing to rent to Black people, the campground now accepts 'all kinds of people.'
She said she did call Mills about Damien Smith because she felt 'betrayed' by not knowing he was Black.

Children are clinging to moving trams for a popular TikTok trend - here's why

A TikTok trend that encourages children to surf on moving trams has become widespread in Nottingham. Nottingham Express Transit (NET) has seen a surge in youngsters gripping onto tram carriages after seeing influencers do the same. In one clip, a pair of school-aged boys are surfing the tram, clinging to its windscreen wiper. A boy can be heard saying: 'What's going on in Nottingham? The boys are on the back of the tram!' Another clip, filmed by a passing motorist and shared by NottinghamshireLive, shows a child holding onto the back of a tram travelling past Hyson Green Market on June 5. After the driver calls the teen a 'doughnut' and urges him to get off, the teen responds with a 'hang loose' hand gesture. Sarah Turner, NET's managing director, told the BBC: 'All of the footage and videos we've received of such incidents have been shared with the police who are now handling it as a criminal matter'. Turner said staff at the tram network would go into schools whose pupils have been caught engaging in the trend to explain how hazardous it was. She warned: 'These people are not only putting their lives at risk, but also the wider public and our team of tram drivers. 'Behaviour like this won't be tolerated and we are collaborating with the police to identify those involved.' Professor Sonia Livingstone, who heads the Digital Futures for Children Centre, told Metro that there's a simple reason thrill-seeking teens do what they do – 'attention'. She added: 'The responsibility must surely lie with TikTok to take down such content immediately. Ideally, the trend is identified by the platform itself, to prevent harm to children.' Neuroscientist Dr Huriye Atilgan, who works with child safety index TAK, said young people often turn to social media to fit in with their peers. She told Metro: 'TikTok's algorithm can amplify extreme behaviours, making dangerous challenges seem more common and tempting to try. More Trending 'The thrill-seeking nature of adolescence combined with the desire for social approval can override their sense of caution. 'This kind of reckless behaviour can have serious consequences, from physical injury to legal trouble. It's encouraging to see the tram network stepping in to educate students directly. 'Clear, relatable messaging that explains real dangers can help young people make safer choices, especially when it comes from trusted local sources they respect.' Buchan, of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, called herself Jessica Jackrabbit on OnlyFans, a site where users pay a monthly subscription to access explicit content. She described herself as a "good teacher gone bad" with a "sexy tight body". Buchan advertised her OnlyFans account through Instagram, which pupils spotted, and previously claimed to have made £60,000 in just one month through the adult site. She was previously warned by her headteacher about her "poor judgment" on social media. And the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GCTS) has taken action by striking her off the teaching register. The regulation body found that Buchan had failed to conceal her identity and profession. It also concluded that her behaviour lacked integrity, as reported by the BBC. Gary Burton, solicitor and presenting officer for the GTCS, said the mum-of-one had "used her profession as a selling tool". He added that Buchan appeared to have backed up her OnlyFans work in media interviews and that Bannerman High was "now synonymous with having an OnlyFans teacher". Hundreds of pupils cheered on a teacher about to undergo lifesaving brain surgery - by rocking out to ACDC'S Thunderstruck She resigned from her position at the school in December 2022 after complaints were made. Buchan declined to appear or give evidence at the GTCS hearing. Bannerman High headteacher, Seonaidh Black, said Buchan was a "bubbly and enthusiastic" person who "wanted to do a good job". But she added that on a "couple of occasions", Buchan was unclear on boundaries with pupils concerning her social media profiles being "open where pupils could access them". Ms Black said that a colleague told her images of Buchan's OnlyFans profile were seen by S5 and S6 pupils. Senior schoolboys asked Ms Black if she had "heard the news?" and that she should "look out for Jessica Jackrabbit". Ms Black added that it was "obvious everyone knew what was going on". She tried to contact Buchan after talks with HR, but couldn't reach her. Buchan's OnlyFans profile was discovered just days before teachers went on strike over pupil behaviour. Ms Black said Buchan's activity online and the walkouts have had a "huge impact" on the school. Following a probe, Glasgow City Council said: "The council has a code of conduct that all employees should adhere to and a teacher who has actively pursued a second income on this type of website brings their school, the council and their profession into disrepute." The GTCS has been contacted for comment.

Neighbourhoods where people are most likely to be mugged, carjacked or robbed

The neighbourhoods and town centres where people are most likely to be mugged, carjacked or threatened and forced to hand over mobile phones have been revealed by a new crime map. A new interactive crime map has revealed the neighbourhoods in Britain where you're most likely to be mugged, carjacked or robbed, according to police data. Last year, police recorded more than 80,000 crimes of robbery in England and Wales. That is any crime where an offender uses force or the threat of force in order to steal. It can include mugging (where someone is attacked and robbed on the street), robbery by intimidation (making someone think violence or force will be used to steal from them), carjacking (using force to steal a vehicle), an armed robbery or a bank robbery. ‌ ‌ It is a more serious offence than simple theft and can leave victims suffering psychological harm, even triggering long-term mental health issues such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The maximum sentence is life imprisonment. As with most crime types, robberies are more likely to take place in busy town and city centres than in residential neighbourhoods. Last year, outside central London - where tourists are far more likely to be targeted than anywhere else - Leeds City Centre witnessed the highest number of robberies with 365, the equivalent of one per day. Next was the North Central & Dartmouth Circus (287) and Central (262) districts of Birmingham city centre. You can see how crime rates compare near you using our interactive map. Crime rates - the number of crimes in each area for every 1,000 people living there - allow for a fairer comparison of the likelihood of being robbed in places with widely different population sizes. However, in some busy city centres, the results may be skewed by the number of visitors. After Leeds City Centre and districts within Birmingham's city centre, the risk of a robbery was greatest in Central Bradford. There were 133 robberies last year in Central Bradford, a rate of 20 crimes for every 1,000 people, or one robbery for every 50 residents. Next was Bristol's City Centre & Harbourside neighbourhood (17 robberies per 1,000 residents), Leicester City Centre (16 per 1,000 people), Central Blackpool (14), and Nottingham City Centre & Trent Bridge (14). ‌ However, robbery is far more likely in London than anywhere else in England and Wales. The 32 local authority areas with the highest rates of robbery are all boroughs of London. Of neighbourhood areas, robberies were most common in Fitzrovia West & Soho, a total of 1,285 last year. That's the equivalent of a robbery every seven hours, or at least three each day. Figures are available for every one of more than 7,000 neighbourhoods in England and Wales apart from areas covered by Greater Manchester Police, as the force has not supplied crime data for last year. Crime figures are available for neighbourhoods with between 7,000 and 10,000 residents, which the government designates as Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs). The statistics do not include crimes reported at train stations, as British Transport Police record them.
