Over 300 cost rental apartments will be delivered in Shankill by the end of next year.
The new A-rated apartments are being delivered in Woodbrook and include 102 one-bed and 226 two-bed homes. The homes are being delivered by the Land Development Agency's (LDA) in partnership with Castlethorn through the LDA's Project Tosaigh initiative.
This is where the Agency partners with private homebuilders, providing the financial stimulus required to initiate construction and complete new housing projects. The completed homes are then owned by the LDA and made available as cost rental or sold by the LDA in partnership with local authorities through affordable purchase schemes.
In this case, all of the 328 Woodbrook apartments will be made available as cost rental, with rents at least 25 per cent below market rates. The wider development includes 685 homes and has the potential to deliver an additional 500 homes.
The Woodbrook apartments are being delivered in two blocks over six storeys and are due to be completed by 2026. They are located beside Woodbrook Golf Club and are also next to Woodbrook Dart station, which is due to open this summer.
John Coleman, Chief Executive of the LDA, said: 'This is a very welcome partnership between the LDA and Castlethorn. We are forward funding the development of 328 new cost rental homes in a prime location with excellent transport links, local amenities and facilities.
"This is a highly accessible and attractive location for renters, and we are pleased to be working with an experienced delivery partner in Castlethorn to bring these homes to market by the end of 2026. These new homes will play an important role in addressing demand for affordable, secure rental accommodation in south Dublin.'

Irish resident released in Iraq after more than four years in custody

More info A Roscommon resident has been released by authorities in Iraq – after being locked up for more than four years, it has emerged. Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris tonight revealed that Robert Pether – who is an Australian citizen but had been living in Elphin with his Irish family – was released on bail earlier today. Mr Harris, who has been working to secure the engineer's release for several months, said his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein contacted him to tell him of the development. Construction engineer Mr Pether, 49, who is married to Desree Pether, 53, from Roscommon, has been locked up since April 2021. The father-of-three was jailed over four years ago in a €20 million contract row between his Dubai-based employer and the Central Bank of Iraq. His distraught family in Ireland revealed Mr Pether, who previously had melanoma skin cancer, has a prostate that is "three times (the) normal size" and that he also has gallstones. Mr Pether and an Egyptian colleague had been employed by a Dubai-based construction company, CME Consulting, to build a new Central Bank in Baghdad, when the contract row erupted. They are accused of stealing money from the project, which they both deny. The United Nations has slammed his jailing as "arbitrary detention." He was due to be released last January but Iraq issued new charges against them and he was facing a further 15 years in custody – until Mr Harris intervened earlier this year. He was a free man tonight - although he must remain in Iraq for the meantime. But the Tánaiste welcomed the decision to free him. He said: "This evening, I have been informed of the release on bail of Robert Pether, whose imprisonment in Iraq has been a case of great concern. "This is very welcome news in what has been a long and distressing saga for Robert's wife, three children and his wider family and friends. "Foreign Minister Hussein of Iraq, whom I spoke to last month to urge Robert's release, called me this evening with the news. I was informed that Robert has been released on bail and for the moment he remains in Iraq, but I welcomed this as a first step to his being allowed to return to his family in Roscommon." The Tánaiste also said he had been in contact with Mrs Pether over the release – and said he was grateful to Irish diplomats who had worked on the case. He said: "I also spoke this evening with Robert's wife, Desree Pether, about this positive development. "I want to thank Irish diplomatic officials based in the region for their continued work on this case. "We remain concerned about Robert's health and outstanding charges, but I am hopeful now of a positive resolution in this case." Government will seek to make development of apartments more viable
The Government is to explore measures that would make apartment building more viable in an attempt to increase housing output. It is understood that the Cabinet's committee focused on housing discussed how to get the greatest volume of housing output from the Land Development Agency (LDA) while requiring a minimum amount of capital funding. The meeting heard that proposals for measures that would help to make apartments a more viable option are being considered. If measures cannot be agreed, then focus would need to shift to building more State-funded social housing or developing lower density, marketable homes where suitable. It is understood that providing the LDA with a broader remit to go beyond social and affordable housing was agreed at the meeting. One source said this will require legislative change. However, it was stressed that this will only involve an adjustment to the section that defines the work the LDA can and cannot carry out and should be relatively straightforward. Ministers also discussed the 'broad direction' of the longer-term housing plan, albeit this is still in the early stages of development. While a decision is imminently expected on rent pressure zones and could be finalised this weekend, it was not on the agenda of the meeting. However, one minister noted there is a 'broad awareness' that this is at an advanced stage and could be ready to go to Cabinet as early as next week without being discussed at the housing sub-Cabinet committee. The meeting also heard of the struggles the LDA is facing in terms of sourcing enough suitable land from State bodies. It was suggested that if more land could be zoned for housing by local authorities, more opportunities would open up in new areas. This would then help to meet the National Planning Framework housing targets. Looking to private land would also bring greater opportunities in counties such as Dublin and Cork, where there is high demand. The LDA is legally required to develop 100% social and affordable housing on public lands in these counties. However, this stipulation does not extend to private land. Where it is feasible to acquire and develop private land, it is to be a mix of social, affordable, and private housing. The controversial housing activation office was also raised at the meeting, though no decision was reached on the matter.

Tributes flow as 'true legend' dad of three dies in tragic accident at home

More info Heartfelt tributes are flooding in for 'a true legend' and 'great friend' Eamonn Egan, 58, who tragically passed away after an accident at his home earlier this week. The father of three and boss of the Irish division of global insurance heavyweight Lloyd's, Mr. Egan, died in an incident involving a tractor loader at his home in Maynooth on Monday. Despite the swift response from emergency services, Mr. Egan was declared dead shortly after their arrival. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has said it is aware of the tragic event and has launched a full investigation. Well respected in the corporate circuit and a one-time amateur jockey, Mr. Egan's passing has left many in mourning. Mr. Egan's death notice on reads: "Egan, Eamonn, Ivy House, Clonfert, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, June 2 2025, following a tragic accident at home, deeply regretted by his loving children Eddie, Emma and Ashlie, wife Sarah, brothers Alan, Declan and Fergal, sister Lorraine, partner Katherine, grandson Ethan, extended family, colleagues and friends. Rest in peace.", reports the Irish Mirror. Over the past days, family and friends have been sharing memories of a man they hailed as "tremendous" and "a true legend". "My sincere condolences to the Egan family. Eamonn was a true legend. Rest in Peace," said one mourner. "We both attended Oatland's College. Although Eamonn was a few years behind me, our paths crossed many times over the years in the insurance industry. Eamonn was always a gentleman in my dealings with him," another person added. "Deepest sympathies to his family and friends on his untimely passing. May he rest in peace." A third said: "My condolences to the Eagan family on such a sad loss. I am genuinely sorry to lose such a good friend. Eamonn always had a kind word and was always great company whenever we were together. "Our time together on the board of the British Irish chamber of commerce, and together in the Royal Dublin society. Social events were always social events when Eamonn was there, and his charm and personality always made the occasion one worthwhile. RIP." Mr. Egan's remains will be laid out at his home on Sunday from 4pm to 8pm, with evening prayers at 7pm. His body will be moved from his home on Monday around 11am to arrive at the Church of St. Patrick and St. Brigid's, Clane for an 11.30am Funeral Mass, followed by interment in Mainham Cemetery, Clane.
