Michael Felger's family-unfriendly stance on athletes consistent, but as bizarre as ever
I can't believe that Felger's viewpoint — whether it's a concocted take or a genuine belief — resonates with too many listeners beyond the stray Neanderthal. It's not entertaining radio, either.
Yet there he was on Monday, hammering Red Sox manager
Alex Cora
for missing that evening's game after his daughter
Camila's
graduation from Boston College earlier in the day.
'It's just the tone you set and the example you set for the team,' said Felger. 'It's not like they need him there to make the pitching change or lay down the bunt. It's the leadership and optics of the whole thing. It's a very easy chance for him to say, 'Nothing's more important than tonight's game.' He just does it by example. Nothing's more important than this game.'
I should've seen this coming, but Felger ripping Alex Cora for missing one game for his daughter's college graduation is crazy. He's acting like one baseball game is more important than a major life milestone for Cora's family
— Boston Media Critic (@bostonmedia617)
Even with the Red Sox plodding along at a mediocre pace, to suggest one game should take priority over a loved one's major life event is absurd. It also overlooks, perhaps intentionally for the sake of Felger's argument, that Cora's greatest strengths as a manager include building trust with his players by acknowledging the importance of their lives away from the field, something that was made evident on multiple occasions in the Netflix series '

Cora has his priorities in order.
'People have their own opinions,'
This isn't the first time Felger has fired off a team-over-family take. In 2016, he
Ean
, in Atlanta.
'I know when you make $30 million a year it ain't much to get a private jet,' he said. '
Wyc
[
Grousbeck
] would probably pick it up to fly down at 3 o'clock in Atlanta. It's about a 90-minute flight to Atlanta. Play the game and come right back.
'I would have gone to the game, I would have played in the game. I like my guys to sort of forsake everything for the team.'
Felger, to his credit only somewhat, acknowledged some hypocrisy during his Horford rant nine years ago. He admitted then that he missed one day of work — just as Horford did — when his daughter was born.
Huh. Why do we suspect he'll take the day off when she graduates from college, too?

Malone on the ball
Former Nuggets coach Michael Malone has been a welcome addition to ESPN's NBA coverage.
David Zalubowski/Associated Press
Michael Malone
,
Malone, refreshingly blunt, has been a welcome addition as guest analyst on ESPN/ABC's pre- and postgame playoff coverage, including correctly referring to
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
as 'a foul artist' for the Thunder star's thespian tendencies while trying to draw a whistle.
Malone did cause a stir in Denver during Game 1 of the Western Conference finals when he referred to Gilgeous-Alexander as 'the MVP' before
Nikola Jokic
.
Malone clarified his position during Game 2, saying Jokic was his MVP choice. Not sure why Malone would care what Nuggets fans feel about anything at this point anyway, but here's hoping he keeps saying what he honestly thinks without worrying about public reaction or falling into the habit of deliberately cooking up hot takes.
ESPN could use someone like that permanently on its NBA coverage. I'd love to see him give in-game color analysis a shot, given how thin ESPN's depth chart is there.
The last word
I must admit that 'Around The Horn,' which began its run of more than 4,900 episodes on Nov. 4, 2002, and ended it Friday for reasons ESPN isn't all that interested in explaining, wasn't a show that I ever eagerly anticipated or sought out.
I always figured the typical 'ATH' audience was college students burning off a few hours in the afternoon, or late lunch customers at Buffalo Wild Wings watching it on mute above the bar.
It had legitimate positives. Host
Tony Reali
, perhaps the most authentically upbeat ESPN personality of this generation, was always good company, and an upgrade on original host
Max Kellerman
. The show was a TV incubator for promising talent — it was fun to see the likes of
Mina Kimes
,
Bill Barnwell
, and
Joon Lee
get their television bearings on the show.
And on a personal/anecdotal note, it was incredibly cool on my first day at the Globe in December 2003 to come into the office and watch
Bob Ryan
participating in the show in front of the 'ATH' backdrop that was in the sports department in those days. If I remember right, he shared some thoughts on
Paul Pierce
and
Antoine Walker
that day.
I won't miss the show much, but I'll always miss that.

Aaron Boone still has plenty of confidence in Trent Grisham despite production dip
Access the Yankees beat like never before Don't miss Greg Joyce's text messages from The Bronx and beyond — he's giving Sports+ subscribers the inside buzz on the Yankees. Sign Up Now Trent Grisham was always bound to cool off at the plate after his red-hot start. But Aaron Boone believes his at-bat quality has remained just as high despite the results dropping off in recent weeks. Advertisement The center fielder was batting .294 with a 1.025 OPS, 12 home runs, 13 walks and 23 strikeouts through 35 games. In 20 games through Friday, he was batting .155 with a .519 OPS, one home run, 14 walks and 23 strikeouts. 'Really good — for me, not much has changed,' Boone said before the Yankees beat the Red Sox 9-6. 'Generally speaking, gets deep in the count, not chasing. Advertisement Trent Grisham walks back to the dugout after striking out during the Yankees' 9-6 win over the Red Sox on June 6, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST 'Just hasn't got a lot of results lately hit-wise, but I think at-bat quality's been there the entirety of the season, really. On those days where you don't get hits, you can still be on base a couple times each in the last two days. A testament to the quality of at-bat he's given day in and day out.' Grisham continued that trend Friday, going 1-for-4 with a walk that led off the Yankees' five-run first inning. Grisham's underlying numbers largely support Boone. Advertisement Before he led off Friday against Walker Buehler, he ranked in the 98th percentile in chase rate (16.3 percent), 89th in barrel rate (15.3 percent) and 85th in walk rate (12.8 percent). Trent Grisham has cooled off after a strong start. Bill Kostroun/New York Post Boone indicated Grisham's case was similar to Ben Rice, whose surface numbers have also taken a bit of a hit despite continuing to hit the ball harder than almost anyone else in the majors. 'Both of those guys, we've seen their averages come down a little bit, but to me, both of those guys are still really putting together good at-bats,' Boone said. Advertisement Devin Williams converted his seventh save of the year Friday, a drama-free ninth inning in which he hit Jarren Duran on a 3-0 pitch but was otherwise sharp. Luke Weaver received a PRP injection to help his strained hamstring heal, and the early results have been promising. The reliever threw on Thursday and did so again on Friday, keeping his arm active after landing on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. His injury came with a reported four-to-six week timeline, though the Yankees have not committed publicly to that. 'He's doing quite well,' Boone said. 'Like the early stages of where he's at and how he's expressing to me how he feels. He's pretty encouraged and optimistic considering the injury and the timeline with it. So hopefully he does better than that.' Advertisement Giancarlo Stanton remained in Tampa on Friday to take more live at-bats with a full workout that included running. He is likely to stay there through the weekend before the Yankees finally make a call on what's next. 'I still think a rehab's in play next week,' Boone said.

The main event is expected to start approximately at 12:30 a.m. ET. Early prelims start at 6 p.m. ET (ESPN+ / Disney+), followed by the prelims at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN / ESPN+ / Disney+) and the main card at 10 p.m. ET (Pay-Per-View). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's UFC odds around the UFC 316: Dvalishvili vs. O'Malley odds, and make our expert UFC picks and predictions. Records: Dvalishvili (19-4-0) | O'Malley (18-2-0) Dvalishvili lifted the bantamweight strap off of O'Malley at UFC 306 in a unanimous-decision victory Sept. 14, 2024. He successfully defended the championship at UFC 311 in January against Umar Nurmagomedov, also by way of unanimous decision. In fact, the Georgian fighter has 5 consecutive victories by way of unanimous-decision. Starting with a unanimous-decision victory over Terrion Ware in September 2018, Dvalishvili has won 11 times by way of UD, with just 1 fight inside the distance by way of KO/TKO in round 2 against Marlon Moraes in September 2021. In fact, in his MMA career, Dvalishvili has 23 fights under his belt, with a 3-0 record via KO/TKO, and 1-1 by way of submission. That means he is 15-3 in 18 fights going the distance. O'Malley hasn't fought since his loss to Dvalishvili at UFC 306 as he suffered a torn labrum in his hip which required corrective surgery. Now that he is healthy, "Suga Show" is back on as he runs it back against Dvalishvili. Prior to the Dvalishvili loss, he took the belt off of Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 by way of KO/TKO in August 2023. Seven months later, he successfully defended the belt against Marlon Vera at UFC 299, winning by unanimous decision March 9, 2024. O'Malley has gone the distance in 3 of his past 4 fights. O'Malley is 4 years younger than his counterpart, and he has a 5-inch height advantage and 4-inch reach advantage. The switch-stance fighter holds a 6.70-to-4.36 significant-strikes-landed-per-minute advantage. Suga also holds a 61.86% significant-strikes-accuracy percentage to 58.94% for the current champ. Dvalishvili has a 5.89 takedown average, while O'Malley checks in at just 0.29 in the category. The submission average difference is rather negligible, however, as O'Malley holds a slight 0.29-to-0.26 advantage. UFC 316: Dvalishvili vs. O'Malley odds Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 2:43 a.m. ET. Fight result (2-way line) : Dvalishvili -285 (bet $285 to win $100) | O'Malley +225 (bet $100 to win $225) : Dvalishvili -285 (bet $285 to win $100) | O'Malley +225 (bet $100 to win $225) Will the fight go the distance? (Yes -250 | No +175) UFC 316: Dvalishvili vs. O'Malley picks and predictions O'MALLEY (+225) is a strong play for the opportunity to multiply up 2.25 times your initial bet. The former champ is healthy and a tremendous value at this price. The key to this fight will be if O'Malley can keep the fight upright, and avoid Dvalishvili from wowing the judges with his takedown ability. Both of these fighters have been routinely going the distance lately. If O'Malley was to get a finish, it would be via KO/TKO. If Dvalishvili was to get a finish, it would be by way of submission. He is No. 1 in control time (1:16:27) among the bantamweights. However, O'Malley leads the division in significant-strikes accuracy, and he has a 3.31 striking differential, which also leads the division. Whomever wows the judges most will get the victory. It's really a coin-flip fight despite whatever the sportsbooks say, so back the better value. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Yes (-250): Fight to go the distance is just a little too on the expensive side, costing 2½ times to win 1 unit. If you were to toss it into a multi-leg parlay, it would be OK, but the parlay likely needs to be at least 3 or 4 legs to make sense. O'MALLEY ON POINTS (+600) is worth a roll of the dice for the chance to multiply up by 6 times. He has won twice via decision in his past 4 fights, including the KO/TKO of Sterling at UFC 292. In the loss to Dvalishvili by way of decision, O'Malley suffered an injury. He is a good bet to bounce back, and for the chance to multiply up 6 times, it's hard to pass on this huge value.
