Attenborough releases film ahead of 99th b-day
British naturalist David Attenborough says there is hope for the future of the planet's oceans despite the scale of their damage in his new film which premiered on Tuesday evening with King Charles in attendance.
In his latest work Ocean, Attenborough, one of the world's best-known nature broadcasters and filmmakers whose work spans seven decades, charts the challenges faced by the seas over his lifetime, from destructive industrial fishing practices to mass coral reef bleaching.
"After almost 100 years on the planet, I now understand the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea," he says in a trailer of the film.
Its full release in cinemas on Thursday coincides with Attenborough's 99th birthday.
"When David Attenborough started there were two TV channels and everybody knew him as the voice of nature. Now there are hundreds of channels, social media but yet he is still the voice for nature," Enric Sala, an executive producer of the film and National Geographic Pristine Seas founder, said in an interview.
Sala said it was important to showcase Attenborough's film to younger viewers.
"We hope that the younger generations coming to the screening today are going to feel so inspired that they will want to be the David Attenborough of the future," Sala said.
Despite depicting the bleak current state of the health of the ocean, discoveries of restored seabeds during filming offer hope.
"The ocean can recover faster than we had ever imagined, it can bounce back to life," Attenborough says in the film.
"If we save the sea we save our world. After a lifetime of filming our planet I'm sure nothing is more important."
The film's release comes ahead of the United Nations Ocean conference in June where it is hoped more countries will ratify a 2023 agreement to protect ocean biodiversity, which currently lacks sufficient signatories to come into force. Reuters

Netflix ‘Tudum' fan event reflects studio investment in global streaming
LOS ANGELES: Netflix continues to add more live content for viewers hungry for real-time entertainment, including the Tyson vs. Paul boxing match, National Football League games and, most recently, the 'Tudum' live fan event that showcased upcoming TV shows. 'This is the first time we've done the show in this way, a live format,' Shelly Gillyard, VP of Series Marketing for the U.S. and Canada, told Reuters at the Netflix Tudum fan event last Saturday. 'Previous years was on the ground fan activations,' Gillyard added. Tudum is named after the sound that plays before each Netflix movie and series. For Netflix, is was important to ensure that they were incorporating talent from all over the world for the global fan event. More than 100 Netflix stars and creators appeared in the show hosted by actor Sofia Carson, who starred in the airport thriller 'Carry On'. The first two Tudum events took place in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2020 and in 2023. However, for 2025, it was relocated to Los Angeles, California. The 2020 Netflix Tudum in Brazil drew 50,000 people in four days and the post-COVID numbers for the 2023 Brazil Tudum were 35,000. Gillyard said the live event could take place somewhere else in the future and Netflix is focused less on where it is held and more on making it available globally. Netflix shares soar on price hikes and record subscriber gains With major titles like 'Squid Game,' 'Stranger Things,' 'Wednesday,' and 'Emily in Paris,' combined with a performance by Lady Gaga, the streamer capitalized on fan interest. One of the largest draws for viewers was the premiere date announcements for Emmy award-winning series 'Stranger Things.' The livestreamed event revealed that 'Stranger Things' will have a fifth and final season split into three parts, with part one on November 26, 2025, part two on December 25, 2025 and the series finale on December 31, 2025.

The ‘Keynote Speaker'
A keynote speaker is typically the main speaker at an event, conference or meeting, and their speech is often the highlight of the program. Therefore, the keynote speaker has to be chosen carefully with the following characteristics in mind: Expertise: Keynote speakers are often experts in their field, with a deep understanding of the topic they are speaking about. Charisma: A good keynote speaker is engaging, charismatic, and able to hold the audience's attention. Inspiration: Keynote speakers often aim to inspire and motivate their audience, leaving a lasting impression. Storytelling: Many keynote speakers use storytelling techniques to make their message more relatable. Unfortunately, Pakistan has a dearth of meaningful keynote speakers. Some great speakers of yore are still around, but slowly losing their relevance. The young generation wants to hear new ideas and concepts. They want verve, vibe and excitement. But the people who know rarely speak and those that speak rarely know. The current restrictions on free expression have become a worldwide trend. But amusing anecdotes abound. At the height of the decolonization era, circa 1956, Lancaster House London was a happening place. One evening, a leader of a large African state, soon to be independent, was the chief guest and keynote speaker at a dinner. He was seated to the right of the British Prime Minister as per tradition. Seated next to him was a London matron, a highly influential politician. In an effort to keep the African leader engaged she quietly asked him 'You like soupee, soupee?' (when the soup was served). He nodded his head yes, yes. So on as the meal progressed. 'You like fishy, fishy?' 'You like sweety, sweety?' (dessert). After dinner it was the African leader's turn to speak. He walked to the rostrum and delivered a 20-minute address in immaculate English. A standing ovation. He returned to his seat, turned to the lady and asked politely 'you like speechee, speechee?' Winston Churchill was an epic orator (much has been written on the subject in this newspaper). One of his lesser-known quips –Churchill absolutely did not like Harold MacMillan. It was mutual. One afternoon Churchill was standing outside Westminster with two party colleagues. A London taxi pulled up. Churchill remarked, 'aah an empty taxi. Soon Harold MacMillian will emerge'. Keynote speakers should hail from a wide spectrum, depending on the host organization: Industry Experts: Specialist in a particular field sharing knowledge and insights. Thought leaders: Visionaries who challenged conventional wisdom and offer new perspectives. Motivational speakers: Speakers who focus on inspiring and motivating their audience. Celebrity speakers: Well-known personalities who share their experiences and insights. As the Executive Director of the Management Association of Pakistan (2000 - 2008) I constantly faced the dilemma of credible keynote speakers. Two instances stand out. In September 2001, MAP (Management Association of Pakistan) had invited Maurice Flanagan, Executive Vice Chairman of Emirates Airlines. I had cultivated Maurice very carefully as a supporter of MAP and Pakistan. After the seminar Maurice Flanagan and myself were to fly to Islamabad. The next morning Maurice was to have a serious meeting with President Pervaiz Musharraf and his team. The agenda: to increase the intake of aviation professionals from Pakistan into Emirates Airlines. A significant step. The Karachi event was planned for 14 September 2001. Unfortunately, the New York event happened on 9/11. Our event in Karachi was cancelled. Much later MAP was planning a major seminar on geopolitics. I had written to Mr. Colin Powell, the then secretary of state of US government, but was not hopeful of a response. Eventually, we (MAP) did receive a letter from Secretary Powell, signed by him, politely declining the event due to prior commitments, but committing to sending a senior official from the State Department. I later learned that Secretary Powell's office made an inquiry from the US Embassy in Islamabad/Karachi about the credentials of the Management Association. They received positive feedback. Life of Chuck' explores essence of life and love
Before finishing the science-fiction drama film The Life of Chuck, English actor Tom Hiddleston and American director Mike Flanagan had a conversation about life, death and existence. "I think (the conversation) went far deeper than just about any conversation I can recall having with an actor," Flanagan told Reuters during an interview in Los Angeles. For both Hiddleston and Flanagan, the core of the film, based on author Stephen King's 2020 novella of the same name, is understanding the essence of being alive. "I loved the wisdom in the story," Hiddleston said. "This idea of holding onto the people you love and the people who matter, because you never know when it'll all end, and to have the courage to live as fully as you can with what you have," he added. The film produced by Intrepid Pictures, FilmNation Entertainment, and WME Independent arrives in theatres on Friday. The story follows Charles "Chuck" Krantz, whose life story is told chronologically backwards, depicting the influence he has on the world and also how the world influences him. The film explores existentialism, death and loss, and the apocalypse, fitting the thematic elements that both King and Flanagan are known for. The cast includes Hiddleston as Chuck Krantz, Mark Hamill as Chuck's grandpa Albie Krantz, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Karen Gillan as ex-spouses Marty Anderson and Felicia Gordon. Beyond the supernatural themes, Hamill believes the messages of The Life of Chuck delve into current real-world divisions. "I really think it's the perfect timing for this movie, because we are so divided as a nation, and we are dealing with just one outrage after another," he said. "It's almost frightening to open up your computer every day and see what's happened now. And so, I think this movie couldn't arrive at a better time. It's almost therapeutic," he added. Reuters
