Serial Killers of the Pacific Northwest: Did Toxins Make Them Do It?
MURDERLAND: Crime and Bloodlust in the Time of Serial Killers, by Caroline Fraser
Ever since the first Neanderthal clubbed a fellow caveman in a random act of violence, people have puzzled over the whys behind certain homicidal acts. Crimes of passion, possession, jealousy, rage and lust can be explained. But the serial killer who murders innocents without tidy explanation has kept many people of good conscience, and no small number of cops, up at night.
Now comes Caroline Fraser, the lyrically luminescent author of books about a beloved heartland author and the odd mysteries of Christian Science, with a unified theory. It's something in the water — and in the air. She draws a clear line between the crimes committed by some of the world's most awful humans and their exposure to lead and other heavy metals from industrial pollution, primarily in the Pacific Northwest.
The effects of lead poisoning on children are well documented. The causal link between this toxic chemical element and serial killers is less so. 'Murderland' is a book-length argument for the lead-crime hypothesis — advanced by a handful of studies in the past— connecting the metal to a host of behavioral problems, including extreme violence.
'Recipes for making a serial killer may vary, including such ingredients as poverty, crude forceps delivery, poor diet, physical and sexual abuse, brain damage and neglect,' Fraser writes. 'Many horrors play a role in warping these tortured souls, but what happens if we add a light dusting from the periodic table on top of all that trauma? How about a little lead in your tea?'
Fraser won a Pulitzer Prize for her last book, 'Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder,' which would seem to have little in common with this one. But just as Fraser probed a dark underside to that little house on the prairie, she finds menace beneath all the surface beauty in the far corner of America where she grew up. Even Mount Rainier, one of the most sublime volcanoes on the planet, comes in for a slap against its glacial hide.
''The mountain is out,' people say, self-satisfied, self-confident,' Fraser writes. 'But it is all a facade. The mountain is admittedly 'rotten inside.' Hollow, full of gas. A place where bad things happen.' Earthquakes, epic floods, smoldering peaks lurk, just like the lead from smelters.

Money in the Bank 2025 date: WWE Money in the Bank match card and predictions
Want to see two WWE wrestlers become future champions in 10 easy steps? Even less if they're tall. It's Money in the Bank weekend and the men and women of WWE are ready to put on a show full of bumps, bruises and falling off ladders. Advertisement This year's show has four matches featured, including a huge tag team all-star match, a Women's Intercontinental championship match and the two Money in the Bank clashes. It should be fun. Here's everything you need to know about the show. When is Money in the Bank? WWE's Money in the bank will be held Saturday, June 10. What time does Money in the Bank start? Money in the Bank starts at 7 p.m. How to watch Money in the Bank In the United States, WWE Money in the Bank will air live on Peacock. It will also be available on traditional pay per view for $44.99. Where is Money in the Bank? WWE's Money in the Bank will be held at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. Does Money in the Bank have a kickoff show? A kickoff show will begin at 6 p.m. Eastern, one hour before the show. It will likely begin after WWE Worlds Collide. It will air on WWE's Youtube page and on Peacock. How long is Money in the Bank? While it's impossible to say, it looks like the card will be about three hours. It's starting at 7, and TKO won't have Money in the Bank air the same time as UFC 316. Will Steve Austin be at UFC 316? If he's not, he should be. WWE Money in the Bank match card Men's Money in the Bank match: Solo Sikoa vs. LA Knight vs. Seth Rollins vs. Penta vs. Andrade vs. El Grande Americano Women's Money in the Bank match: Giulia vs. Stephanie Vaquer vs. Naomi vs. Roxanne Perez vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Rhea Ripley Lyra Valkyria vs. Becky Lynch, Women's Intercontinental championship match Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso vs. John Cena and Logan Paul Money in the Bank predictions There are four matches on the card, which is one less than normal, but that could be thanks to the length of the ladder matches. Here's how we see it playing out. Men's Money in the Bank match Everyone has Seth Rollins as the favorite, but I think he has too many enemies to win this. Sure he has friends, but so many are out to get him. He's a longshot, but I'm sticking with my boy Solo Sikoa to grab the briefcase. He needs it. He's done a lot to make other people look good, he's built other guys, he's been everything WWE could want. Put the belt on him and let him go toe to toe with Jacob Fatu. I'm predicting Solo Sikoa wins. Women's Money in the Bank match Once again, I'm going with the wrestler who deserves it the most. All are deserving, all are capable of big things, but Naomi is who I'm going with. She helped Jade Cargill look great at WrestleMania, and while she held up her end of the bargain, Naomi was the veteran leading that match. She's been a pretty entertaining bad girl, and I'd like to see her with some gold. Naomi wins. Lyra Valkyria vs. Becky Lynch Becky Lynch has helped make Lyra Valkyria a star. And Valkyria is doing her best to hang right there with one of the best women in the world. Guess what? She doesn't at all look out of place. Not in the ring, not even on the microphone where Lynch is one of the best. I thought Valkyria was the star last month and she was great leading up to this rematch. I think she does it again. Valkyria wins. Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso vs. John Cena and Logan Paul This match has two of my favorites (Jey Uso, Logan Paul) and two of the biggest stars in the world. But I have little interest in it. It will be fun, and I'm looking forward to what this match leads to, so that will be cool, but I have little interest in who wins. I'm banking on the bad guys winning, and I think Uso and Paul will make the match fun. Cena's matches haven't been good during this championship run. I hope he somehow wins without kicking someone low. Prediction: Logan Paul and John Cena win. Overnight quadruple shooting in Milwaukee injures four near Fiserv Forum, Deer District
An overnight quadruple shooting in downtown Milwaukee sent four young adults to hospitals for injuries, according to the Milwaukee Police Department. The shooting happened around 2:47 a.m. June 8 on the 300 block of West McKinley Avenue, one block northeast of the Deer District and Fiserv Forum. Three 22-year-old victims were transported to local hospitals for injuries, though police did not specify if the injuries were gunshot wounds. Another 21-year-old-victim sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound, police said, and was taken to a hospital. No one died in the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and police seek unknown suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-Tips or P3 Tips. The shooting comes two days after two shootings that happened minutes apart on West Hampton Avenue, killing two and injuring four. Those shootings prompted Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson to issue a statement, asking the city's residents to take "all possible steps" to reduce gun violence. "To anyone inclined to shamelessly shoot at another human being, your actions will land you in prison," Johnson said. Gun violence has risen in recent weeks, with homicides in mid-May outpacing 2024 figures. The increase has prompted concern among violence prevention groups.
