Grace Clinton bullish ahead of FA Cup final: 'Chelsea aren't invincible'
Grace Clinton's first experience of a Women's FA Cup final as a player last year was a memorable one. Just not in the way she would have hoped.
On loan at Tottenham for the season, Clinton had played an invaluable role in helping guide Robert Vilaham's side to the competition's final for the first time in the club's history.
A day out at Wembley should have been the reward for a fine season which had also seen the midfielder deservedly named PFA Women's Young Player of the Year.
But with her parent club, Manchester United, also getting through to the final, Clinton was instead condemned to a seat in the stands, cup-tied and confused as she watched Tottenham fall to a 4-0 defeat.
'It was such a bizarre feeling, just weird,' she reflects to Metro. 'I'd worked all season long to get to the final with Tottenham to try and create this opportunity to do something special at a club that doesn't get to those finals so often. To then just sit in the stands and watch it play out was hard to swallow.

'But I also had all my friends and people that I've grown up with winning the trophy with United. I've never felt anything like it – it was frustration, it was happiness, it was disappointment. All of those things at once.'
Returning to United last summer, the 22-year-old has put that disappointment behind her and continued her remarkable rise at both club and international level. Deployed in the heart of Marc Skinner's midfield, Clinton scored an impressive eight times in 21 WSL games to help United finish third and qualify for the Women's Champions League.
A well-taken header against Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals also helped punch the defending champions' return ticket to Wembley. Thankfully for Clinton, there will be no watching from the stands this time around.
'It's been a big season for me. Obviously, coming back from Tottenham, there was an expectation to be able to deliver the same performances,' she said.
'I've enjoyed that challenge, but I'm also still learning so much every game around an amazing group. Reaching the Champions League and another FA Cup final is amazing and our levels have been so high.
'Every game feels like a cup final when you're at the top of the table and competing for those places, but Wembley is a really special way to end the season.'
But while United will return to Wembley on Sunday as the defending champion, they will also go into the match as heavy underdogs up against five-time champions Chelsea.
Sonia Bompastor's side are eyeing up a famous domestic treble, having already won the WSL title and League Cup. The Blues ended the league season unbeaten and have only lost twice all season when they became unstuck in their Champions League semi-final with Barcelona.
Chelsea's 1-0 victory over United at the end of April was the win that secured them the title, but Clinton insisted the manner of her side's performance on the night has only buoyed their hopes of pulling off an upset this time around.
'Everyone knows how good Chelsea are and can be,' she admits. 'They've won six titles in a row for a reason, but I feel like it was good that we played them a couple of weeks ago.
'It felt like we were the better team and that gave us a lot of confidence to know that we should have beaten them.
'The magic of the cup is that it's just one game, 90 minutes, and I feel like we're in a really good place at the moment. Chelsea are unbeaten, but they're not invincible and I believe in the squad that we've got.'
Such confidence is indicative of a young sportswoman who has taken everything about her rapid rise firmly in her stride.
It's perhaps also why, only days out from her latest trip to Wembley, Clinton makes the trip down to London to help kick off the first McDonald's all-girls Fun Football Day at Hanwell Town FC, still aware of how important her presence can be in helping more young girls into the sport.
'When I was younger, I played on boys' teams until I joined an academy,' she added. 'It's why events like this are so important. It's nice for it to be all girls and to encourage them to play because when I was younger, I didn't have access to that.' More Trending
It could yet be a big summer for Clinton, still. A key part of Sarina Wiegman's England squad over recent international breaks, she will no doubt play her role in a Lionesses squad that has its eyes set on retaining the European Championship in Switzerland this summer.
Such an opportunity has arrived quickly at Clinton's door, but one gets the sense it would take far more than a maiden international tournament on foreign soil to faze this impressive young footballer.
'The biggest thing for me is to be excited by the challenges ahead,' she ended. 'Whether it's United at Wembley or England at the Euros, every game just gets me excited.'

Fernandes will also turn 31 later this year and there continues to be question marks over whether he truly fits into Amorim 's system once he gets the players he wants. His output this season has been sensational, albeit largely in a losing effort. United have endured a dire campaign and they missed out on Europe when they were beaten in the Europa League final. That has placed even more strain on the club's financial situation. However Amorim has told United chiefs to find other ways of making money rather than selling their star man, despite the player himself seriously considering the offer he has in front of him. Amorim claims, through conversations with Fernandes, that the Portugal star wants to stay put. He said: "Of course I am the manager, the coach, but sometimes it is the decision of the player, but of course I talk with him, I explain things and I just have that feeling. When you talk to someone, you have that feeling if he wants to stay. "Of course in a lot of games this season he was so frustrated, but he knows what we are doing. The feeling that I have every time I speak to him is he wants to continue for sure at Man Utd. But you never know." Fernandes has been spotted dining with Portugal pal Joao Cancelo - who has been dubbed a "secret agent" by fans as the former Manchester City full-back looks to convince the United star to join him at Al-Hilal, where fellow Portugal international Ruben Neves is also in the squad. Would Fernandes really go? Well his agent Miguel Pinho has been in Riyadh for talks with senior Al Hilal individuals and those in Saudi see it as a positive sign that discussions have been held. Paul Scholes is among those who admits the sort of sums being offered cannot be turned down. He admitted: "When you're getting £100m for him you snap their hand off and take it.' Fernandes has admitted he would leave Old Trafford if United decided it was in their best interests to cash in. 'If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it is what it is,' he said. 'And football sometimes is like this. I have always been honest. I've always said I will be here until the club says to me that it's time to go." His social media activity has also served to fuel the rumour mill. He recently posted a Portuguese quote on his social media account which translates to: 'If you tried and failed, congratulations! There are people who don't even try.' Can Man Utd find a replacement? Well they are are lining up Sporting Lisbon's attacking midfielder Pedro Goncalves as the man to fill the void that could be left by Fernandes. The Red Devils would have the finances to meet Sporting's £70m valuation of Goncalves if they do cash in. Goncalves plays in a more advanced role than Fernandes after Amorim transformed him into a potent attacking midfielder throughout their time together in Portugal. He can also play out wide, which gives the team more versatility. The £100m they would receive would also help them improve other areas of the pitch. Meanwhile the £62.5m capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves goes someway to replacing the goals and assists provided by Fernandes - and there's an argument that the Brazilian better suits the 3-4-3 system in Manchester.

Chelsea move for £50m Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens
Chelsea are in talks with Borussia Dortmund over Jamie Gittens and want to wrap up a deal before both clubs go to the Club World Cup. Gittens, 20, was the subject of an enquiry from Chelsea in January and it is understood they have approached the German club about a deal in the current window. The England Under-21 winger, who spent time in Chelsea's academy as a child, has been expected to attract bids of more than £50 million, with a release clause of around that value in his contract. The deal will be a full focus for Chelsea with uncertainty over the future of Jaden Sancho, the former Dortmund player who is on loan from Manchester United and whom Chelsea have a contractual obligation to buy for between £20 million and £25 million – having finished in the top 14 of the Premier League – or pay a £5 million exit penalty fee. Chelsea have been active in the market early this year, to bolster Enzo Maresca's squad before the Fifa tournament this summer in America. Liam Delap is set to join from Ipswich Town in a £30 million deal, with Gittens now a target too. Gittens is one of the latest English talents to start their senior careers in the Bundesliga, having arrived at Dortmund in 2020 to play in their development teams. A year ago he helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final, which was somewhat overshadowed by Sancho facing Jude Bellingham in the Wembley showpiece. Earlier this season he became the youngest English player to score in the tournament – aged 20 and 75 days – when he netted against Real Madrid. England interim coach Lee Carsley name-checked Gittens in interviews before Thomas Tuchel took charge, and he has also played for the Under-21s. But the Club World Cup, starting on June 14, has priority over internationals which meant Gittens was not included in the squad for the Under-21 Euros. Dortmund will be at the expanded summer tournament, while Chelsea will play against Los Angeles FC, Flamengo and Espérance de Tunis in Group D. Chelsea have been in the market for a forward this summer as Christopher Nkunku looks set to leave after two years at the club. They were also looking at Alejandro Garnacho in the January window along with Gittens, with the Manchester United winger also allowed to leave this summer.
