Stability has returned to Murshidabad; have no clue about Guv's report: CM
Stating that the situation in violence-hit Murshidabad has stabilised, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she has no knowledge of Governor CV Ananda Bose's report on the riots to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), nor of his mention of the possible implementation of Article 356 in the state.
Banerjee, who left for a two-day visit to Murshidabad on Monday afternoon, said she could have visited earlier, but chose to wait until the situation had normalised.
"I have no information about Bose's report to the MHA. The Governor's health is not okay. Let us pray to God for his speedy recovery," Banerjee said before boarding the helicopter to Murshidabad.
"I could have gone to Murshidabad earlier, but if there is no peace and stability there, we should not go and disturb. Stability has returned to Murshidabad long back. Today, I am going there," she added.
The CM said she will hold a district review meeting in Berhampore later in the day.
"Tomorrow, I will visit violence-hit Dhuliyan and give compensation to people whose houses and shops were damaged," Banerjee added.
Bose has sent a report on the recent riots in Murshidabad district to the MHA, mentioning that the "twin spectre of radicalisation and militancy" poses a serious challenge to the state.
In his report, he suggested a slew of measures, including setting up an inquiry commission and outposts of central forces in districts bordering Bangladesh, besides writing, "needless to add, the provisions under Article 356 of the Constitution also remain".
The imposition of Article 356 of the Constitution refers to the President's rule in a state.
The governor also suggested several measures in the aftermath of violence that claimed the lives of at least three people, including a man and his son, and left several injured. The riot occurred amidst anti-Waqf (Amendment) Act protests.
In the report, the governor also claimed that the riots appeared "premeditated" and the state government was "aware of the imminent build-up of a threat to law and order in Murshidabad".
Banerjee, meanwhile, said her party, the Trinamool Congress, stands with the central government on matters of national security in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack..
"Our party is with the government on issues related to internal and external security," she added.

Kolkata: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has removed the name of Newton Das from the voter list, officials said on Friday. He was seen participating in the 2024 student movement in Bangladesh. The decision was taken after a thorough investigation by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on the directions of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Newton Das, having dual citizenship of India and Bangladesh, was a registered voter in the Kakdwip Assembly constituency in the South 24 Parganas district. He was actively involved in the student 'movement' in Bangladesh last year. Insiders from the CEO's office said the decision to remove Das's name from the voters' list was taken after the election-related senior officials received two consecutive reports from the office of the Kakdwip sub-divisional officer on this count. Sources said that not being satisfied with the first report on the matter, the office of the CEO, West Bengal, asked for a second report from the office of the Kakdwip sub-divisional officer and after studying the reports in detail, it was finally decided to delete Das's name from the voters' list. The controversy surfaced after some whistleblowers highlighted the picture of Newton Das, a registered voter with Kakdwip Assembly constituency, featuring in the students' movement in Bangladesh last year on social media. The whistleblowers also claimed that Das had dual citizenship of India and Bangladesh. Even Tapan Das, a cousin of Newton Das and also a registered voter in the Kakdwip Assembly constituency, confirmed to the investigating officials and to the media persons that Newton had voter cards both in India and Bangladesh. However, since the beginning, Newton denied the allegations of holding Bangladeshi citizenship, though he did not deny having gone to the country and participating in the students' movement there. According to him, he had been a voter of the Kakdwip Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district since 2014 and had also voted in the Lok Sabha elections that year. He claimed that he went to Bangladesh in 2024 in order to address some issues relating to his ancestral property there, and during that period, he got involved with the students' movement there. He also claimed that in 2017 he lost the EPIC card, which was issued to him in 2014, and in 2018 he was issued a fresh card. He also admitted that the Trinamool Congress MLA from Kakdwip, Manturam Pakhira, helped him get the new EPIC card. The West Bengal unit of the BJP created uproar on the issue and claimed that Newton's example validates their long-time allegations of Trinamool Congress and the state administration enlisting Bangladeshi nationals in the state's voters list.

ACB Summons KTR for Formula E Race Inquiry
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has issued a notice to K. T. Rama Rao (KTR), the Working President of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and former Minister, requiring him to attend questioning on Monday, the 16th of this month at 10 am, in relation to the Formula E Race case. Previously, the ACB had summoned KTR on May 26, asking him to appear for questioning on May 28. However, he was unable to attend due to a tour in America. KTR informed the ACB of his foreign commitments and indicated his willingness to cooperate once he returned. The ACB subsequently agreed to reschedule and has now issued another notice for his appearance. It is important to note that KTR has previously attended questioning sessions with both the ACB and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concerning the same case. On January 6, he arrived at the ACB for an inquiry with his legal team but departed when officials did not permit him to enter. He returned to the ACB for questioning on January 8, where he was interrogated for approximately seven hours. Although he was called again on January 9, KTR requested additional time to respond to the inquiry. In addition, the ACB has questioned Arvind Kumar, Secretary of the Municipal Department, and BLN Reddy, the former Chief Engineer of HMDA, as part of its investigation. The inquiry stems from allegations of the misuse of ₹55 crores related to the Formula E race, which was held in Hyderabad during the BRS administration.
