From Pune to Aragam: terror survivor returns to lead Kashmir's first ‘book and poetry village'

Indian Express04-05-2025

Aragam, a tribal village located 70 km from Srinagar in Bandipora district, has become Kashmir's first 'book and poetry village', where over 70 households have dedicated spaces for books. This project, which started in March last year, will now be managed by Manzoor Rather, who had come to Pune after witnessing his father's killing by militants.
Manzoor Rather's return to his homeland comes at a time when many are leaving Jammu and Kashmir following the Pahalgam terror attack in search of safety.
On October 5, 1998, while three-year-old Rather sat in his father's lap at the dinner table, a group of militants stormed their home in Ajas Bazipora village and killed his father.

'I could've been killed if my father hadn't thrown me away. Following this incident, my grandmother took me to Aragam, where I studied till Class 1. Then, with the help of the Sarhad NGO, I completed my schooling and graduation from the Sarhad Institute in Pune. And recently did my master's in English literature from the Azam campus,' he said.
While in Pune, Rather discovered his passion for freestyle dance. He is now a professional choreographer who has worked in Marathi films and was the lead in the title track of Marathi movies like Redu and others.
Despite achieving financial stability and settling in Pune with his wife, Rather felt a pull toward his native place. 'I was not content with life overall, as my people in Kashmir are still in search of education and economic opportunities, and I was thinking of doing something for them for many years. After seeing Mushtaq Khoja, a Kashmiri local who started Sarhad Public School in Dardpora village in Kupwara district, which now helps over 250 students study there, my resolve for Aragam strengthened. There I will teach my dance skills to help the budding artists, and connecting with residents there will enhance the cultural exchange which I have gained over the years,' he added.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sanjay Nahar, founder of Sarhad, said, 'The Aragam project was implemented in March last year through the collaborative efforts of the Bandipora district administration, our NGO, and Siraj Khan, who initiated the groundwork and was inspired by Bhilar village in Mahabaleshwar. Currently, it has an open library, with over 3,000 books of different genres, which have been distributed to over seventy households and include contributions from the Maharashtra government's Marathi language department.'
Sarhad is also planning to start a UPSC guidance centre at Aragam. 'With specialised study materials and civil services exam guidance sessions, our effort will be to help increase the representation of candidates from Jammu and Kashmir in central services,' explained Rather.
Rather also aims to develop community-based tourism through homestays. 'This will be beneficial for tourists and locals as well, as economic opportunities will be created for residents while tourists can get a firsthand experience of local Kashmiri culture, which often gets missed in hotel stays. Scaling this initiative with an educational component will keep the youth engaged and divert their attention away from militant activities,' he added.

Marathi Horror Series Andhar Maya Unveils Haunting Trailer Ahead Of Premiere

New Delhi: ZEE5 has unveiled the spine-chilling trailer for Andhar Maya, its first-ever Marathi horror original series, set to premiere on May 30. Set against the eerie and atmospheric backdrop of the Konkan region, the series tells a disturbing tale of a family's return to their ancestral home, only to confront horrors that transcend reason, time, and reality. Directed by National Award-winner Bhimrao Mude and produced by Sharmishtha Raut and Tejas Desai under Ericon Telefilms, Andhar Maya stars the acclaimed Kishor Kadam in a mysterious role that promises to be one of his most emotionally complex performances to date. The series has been penned by Pralhad Kudtarkar (story and dialogues) and Kapil Bhopatkar (screenplay), and promises a deeply immersive horror experience. The story follows the Khatu family as they return to their ancestral wada in Konkan for a final ritual. However, what begins as a traditional homecoming quickly descends into a psychological and supernatural nightmare. As time loops and family members begin to vanish, the house itself seems to awaken with a sinister will—reclaiming its own in terrifying fashion. The narrative blurs the lines between memory and myth, reality and illusion, emotion and dread. V.R. Hema, Chief Channel Officer - Zee Marathi and Business Head - ZEE5 Marathi, remarked on the significance of the series: 'This is just the beginning. With Andhar Maya, ZEE proudly launches its first-ever Marathi Original Horror Series on ZEE5. We are all set to explore the world of OTT with a bold new voice. But pioneering has always been part of our DNA. From launching Maharashtra's first private GEC with Zee Marathi, to revolutionizing cinema with Zee Talkies and Zee Studios, we've consistently shaped the landscape of Marathi entertainment. Now, we carry that legacy forward into the digital age—rooted in our culture, stories, and people. Set against the mystic backdrop of Konkan, Andhar Maya is a gripping blend of folklore, familial bonds, and psychological suspense. It represents our deep commitment to investing in local storytelling and creative talent. We believe this is the start of a powerful new chapter—one that brings the dreams and voices of Maharashtra to every screen, everywhere' Producers Sharmishtha Raut and Tejas Desai added, 'Andhar Maya is a project that's extremely close to our heart. It's a compelling story that blends emotion, suspense, and raw human truth. As producers, it's fulfilling to see a Marathi series take such a significant step like being streamed on a global platform like ZEE5. This milestone not only marks a new beginning for Marathi content on digital platforms but also reinforces our commitment to showcase meaningful, high-quality stories. I'm excited for audiences to experience the world of Andhar Maya.' Director Bhimrao Mude said, "With Andhar Maya, my vision was to craft a world that feels deeply rooted yet disturbingly unfamiliar—a space where emotions, memories, and the supernatural coexist. Launching the trailer feels like opening the first door to that world, and I couldn't be more thrilled to finally share it. This story is as much about the ghosts of the past as it is about the fears we carry within us. The Konkan region, with all its texture and mystique, gave us the perfect canvas to build something visually rich and emotionally layered. I hope viewers find themselves intrigued, moved, and thoroughly spooked—because this is just the beginning of what the show has to offer.' Lead actor Kishor Kadam described his role as deeply moving and psychologically intense: "Playing Gonya in Andhar Maya has been one of the most hauntingly beautiful journeys of my career. He's a man of few words but carries centuries of silence and secrets within him. The trailer offers just a glimpse into the world we've built—but trust me, the real chills begin when the story unfolds. It's not just emotionally rich, it's deeply unsettling, keeping you on edge every second. Working with Bhimrao Mude and such an honest, passionate team made it even more special. This isn't your typical horror—it lingers, it whispers, and it stays with you. I'm genuinely excited to see how audiences respond once they step inside this world with us.' Andhar Maya premieres May 30 exclusively on ZEE5, promising a gripping blend of folklore, psychological tension, and emotional resonance. Step into the shadows—some stories are meant to be heard in whispers.

Last Updated: In addition to introducing new musicians, Saiyaara will also mark the acting debut of Ahaan Panday in the Hindi film industry. The title track of Yash Raj Films' upcoming romantic drama Saiyaara has finally been released. Dropped on Tuesday, June 3, the video is making waves, especially for spotlighting two new Kashmiri musicians. Faheem Abdullah, handpicked by director Mohit Suri, makes his singing debut alongside the film's music composer, Arslan Nizami. Faheem's soulful voice brings life to the title track, composed by Tanishk Bagchi in collaboration with Arslan. The lyrics are penned by Irshad Kamil. Faheem Abdullah shared his experience of working on the film as a Kashmiri singer. He said, 'It is an honour to represent Kashmir in the Hindi film industry with our musical debut in Saiyaara! Our state has beautiful people and incredible artists. I'm really happy that two Kashmiri boys have worked really hard to land this project of a lifetime and are trying to make a name for themselves in the Hindi film industry. We want to make our people back home proud of our work, and it is truly humbling to witness that my song is the first track to open the Saiyaara promotional campaign," as per a report by MoneyControl. He continued, 'It is quite an overwhelming moment for me, my family, my friends and my well-wishers. Saiyaara title track is one of the purest songs that I have ever heard and I have tried to pour my everything into it under the guidance of the genius Tanishk Bagchi and the music visionary Mohit Suri. I share this moment with my friend Arslan without whom the magic of Saiyaara couldn't come alive." Arslan, equally excited, shared, 'I wouldn't have believed if people told me a couple of years earlier that I will get a chance to compose a song for a big film in the Hindi film industry. So, there was no way that I was dreaming that I would get a chance to compose for Mohit Suri in his directorial! This is an incredible milestone moment for my career and I couldn't be happier, prouder. To have my song, which I have composed along with an exceptionally talented fellow Kashmiri artiste like Faheem and the incredible Tanishk Bagchi, lead the Saiyaara promotional campaign feels surreal." Speaking to IANS, director Mohit Suri, who is known for creating musical hits like Kalyug, Zeher, Woh Lamhe, Awarapan and Aashiqui 2 has revealed that the album of Saiyaara took nearly five years to curate. Mohit said, 'One thing that only a handful close friends know about me is that I love meeting new composers, singers, collecting melodies and songs much like people who love reading, collect books. So, the album of Saiyaara has my songs, thoughts and melodies that I have carefully collected and curated for over 5 years." He also spoke about the two Kashmiri musicians: 'Saiyaara title track will also see us launch Faheem Abdullah and Arslan Nizami, two extremely talented Indian composers and singers (from Kashmir) to Bollywood. The track has been composed by the genius Tanishk Bagchi, who I thank for making me meet Faheem & Arsalan. The beautiful lyrics are written by the maestro Irshad Kamil". In addition to introducing new musicians, Saiyaara will also mark the acting debut of Ahaan Panday in the Hindi film industry. He stars opposite Aneet Padda, who continues to win hearts with her standout performance in the acclaimed series Big Girls Don't Cry. The film is set for a worldwide theatrical release on July 18, 2025. First Published:
