Former Chelsea starlet quits football aged 24 to join the army after admitting ‘I lost the taste for the sport'

FORMER Chelsea goalkeeper Nicolas Tie has quit football aged 24 to join the French army.
Tie was on the Blues' books between 2017 and 2020.

The Lille-born stopper did not crack Chelsea's first team, but did feature for their various academy age groups in the Premier League 2, Uefa Youth League and Under-18 Premier League.
Tie, who was called up to the Ivory Coast national team in 2018, left Stamford Bridge in 2020 for Portuguese side Vitoria.
After failing to make the first team in Portugal, the 6ft 1in goalkeeper has opted to hang up his boots.
In an interview with French paper Ouest France, Tie revealed that he has joined the army.

"I've had some good tests, I've got the regiment I asked for," Tie said.
"I'm ready, I'm training every day for this."
On what led him to such a drastic career change, the former Blue admitted: "I lost my taste for football.
"I always liked military careers, so I said to myself: 'Why not join the army?'

"My stepfather is a paratrooper in Ivory Coast; I would go to the barracks to observe… It inspired me."
Tie, who claimed to be "proud" of his "little career" also revealed that he would be willing to serve in Ukraine.

The goalkeeper-turned-soldier said: "I don't do politics. I have committed to treating the problem at the source.
"If the OPEX (external operations) in Ukraine is open, let's go! It doesn't scare me."

Premier League teams have chosen not to change controversial rules that allow the sale of fixed assets to companies related to a club's ownership. Despite discontent among some clubs over the rules, which have helped Chelsea to meet profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) by selling two Stamford Bridge hotels to businesses linked to their owners, no vote was taken on changing them at the league's annual general meeting in Harrogate on Wednesday. Chelsea's hotel sales were ultimately cleared by the Premier League after a lengthy assessment which concluded earlier this year. The process led to the value of the deal being restated, however, at £70.5m in Chelsea's latest accounts, down from an original £76.5m. The west London side have also sold their women's team to a related company at a value of almost £200m last year, helping the club record a net profit of £129.6m for the year ended 30 June 2024. The Guardian understands that the league was asked by some clubs to table an amendment that would prevent such deals from being included in PSR calculations in future. That proposal was ultimately removed from a series of votes on rule changes, however, after it became clear there was insufficient support amongst the totality of clubs to pass it. All clubs attended the AGM on Wednesday knowing there would be no vote. This is not the first occasion that clubs have stepped back from changing the rules. Alterations were discussed first in 2021, when the EFL had brought in tougher rules, and then last summer, but no vote was taken on either occasion. The sale of fixed assets cannot be included in revenue under Uefa's financial sustainability rules, however and the Blues are expected to have agree a potential financial settlement with European football's governing body as a result.

Sweden boss flatly rejects Gyokeres transfer claims amid ongoing Arsenal talks
Viktor Gyokeres has been forced to withdraw from Sweden's squad for this week's international break through injury as speculation mounts over his future at Sporting Lisbon Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has denied that Viktor Gyokeres has left the national team squad to avoid injury amid a potential move to Arsenal. Gyokeres is one of the hottest properties on the market this summer. The striker has scored a ridiculous 97 goals in 102 games across two years with Sporting Lisbon, winning successive Primeira Liga titles. His contract runs until the summer of 2028 but it appears increasingly likely he will leave the Estádio José Alvalade. Arsenal are among the clubs chasing his signature as they search for a new striker. They have opened talks with the Portuguese giants over a potential deal, though first comes an international break. Sweden will face Hungary and Algeria in friendlies across the next week, with the Scandanavians not starting their World Cup qualification campaign until September. Even so, the two friendlies are a good chance for Tomasson to assess his squad. Gyokeres had been included in the original 24-man group for the games in Budapest and Stockholm. But on Tuesday it was announced that the 27-year-old would be leaving the group early. That sparked rumours that Gyokeres may have pulled out in order to protect himself from picking up an injury which could potentially scupper a big summer move. But that talk has now been rubbished by Tomasson. "No! He felt a small injury and our medical team was already aware of it and we decided, together, to release him," Tomasson said. "I spoke to Viktor last week. He hasn't trained much in the last few weeks and was feeling some discomfort because of a small injury. "I was happy to see him and have him with us in this training camp. It says a lot about Viktor, how much he wants to get involved. We're thinking about it [a replacement] and need to talk more about it. In a perfect world, we have all players available." The Swedish FA released a short statment earlier this week to confirm Gyokeres' exit. It read: "Viktor Gyökeres is not available for the men's national team's friendlies against Hungary and Algeria due to a minor injury. "The striker will leave the squad after dialogue with the national team's medical team. Gyökeres needs to rehabilitate a minor injury and is therefore not available for the upcoming international matches against Hungary and Algeria. "In consultation with the medical team, the decision has been made that Viktor will leave the national team. The men's national team will face Hungary on June 6th away and Algeria at Strawberry Arena on June 10th." The striker provided an update on his future earlier in the week. He insisted that he had not made a decision on his future despite the Gunners having opened talks with Sporting chiefs. "We will see… nobody knows anything yet," Gyokeres said on the Flymoduspod podcast. "I wish I had a more fun answer, but that's all I can say for now."

He then took charge of football operations at the club and has been in that role for a year trying to implement change at the club. The report adds that Geraint Thomas will be taking a senior leadership role at Ineos' professional cycling team when he retires as a rider at the end of this season.
