Andy Peebles, former Radio 1 DJ and presenter, dies aged 76

The Guardian23-03-2025

Andy Peebles, the former Radio 1 DJ and presenter who was one of the last people to interview John Lennon, has died aged 76, his family has confirmed.
Peebles began his radio career in Manchester in 1973 and joined Radio 1 in 1978, where he was a familiar voice for 14 years.
His friend and former colleague Mike Read said on X that he was 'devastated' to hear the news. 'We joined Radio 1 together. Knew his music and cricket inside out.
'Raise your bat and enjoy a long rest in the pavilion.'
Read posted a recent picture of him having lunch with Peebles and fellow former Radio 1 DJs Dave Lee Travis and Adrian Juste.
Tony Blackburn, the first DJ to be heard on Radio 1 when it launched in 1967, posted: 'So sorry to hear that fellow DJ from Radio 1 when I was there Andy Peebles has passed away.
'He was a lovely man and a great broadcaster, very sad news. R.I.P. Andy.'
Peebles said the highlight of his career was interviewing Lennon in 1980, although it was bittersweet because, two days later, the former Beatle was dead after being shot by Mark Chapman.
The interview lasted three hours and 22 minutes, Peebles later recalled. 'It is a staggeringly long time to actually talk to somebody and that was all down to him.'
Peebles' final question was about how safe Lennon felt living in New York. Lennon suggested he felt very safe as he could easily walk down the street and go to movies and restaurants, whereas in London he 'couldn't walk round the block'.
Peebles, in an interview with RTÉ to mark the 40th anniversary of Lennon's death, recalled going for dinner with him at Mr Chow's in Manhattan after the interview.
The whole restaurant turned their heads. Lennon put his arm around Peebles' shoulder and said: 'They're all saying who the bleep is that with Andy Peebles?'
Born in 1948, he began working as a club DJ in the 1960s before joining BBC Radio Manchester in 1973 and then helping to found Manchester's Piccadilly Radio, where he presented his weekly Soul Train programme.
He joined BBC Radio 1 in 1978 and presented a variety of programmes including a soul show and My Top Twelve, in which music stars would choose their favourite records and talk about their life and career.
Peebles also presented 15 episodes of Top of the Pops and a number of Radio 1 roadshows.
After Radio 1, Peebles had stints at Manchester's Smooth FM and London's 102.2 Jazz FM, and was inducted into the Radio Academy's hall of fame in 2011.

Kerry Katona shows true colours over Katie Price friendship after cancelled tour

OK! Magazine columnist Kerry Katona appears to have thrown shade at her long-term friend Katie Price after their joint upcoming tour was cancelled as she says she's finally 'back on track' Kerry Katona has shared her thoughts on some of the latest hot topics in showbiz, including Chris Martin's shock split with Dakota Johnson after eight years, Jessie J's breast cancer diagnosis, Jamie Laing becoming a first-time-dad, and Kerry herself feeling 'back on track' after her joint tour with long-term friend Katie Price was recently cancelled. Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson's shock split I was sad to read about Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson's split, I thought they made a really nice couple and seemed very happy. I hope they're both doing OK. I really like Chris and his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. ‌ I think they're such a great family and it's amazing how they have managed to co-parent their kids and stay friends. I take my hat off to anyone who can do that, I wish I could have. ‌ I always wish Brian and I could have stayed friends. Molly went to watch him at a festival last week and I would have loved to have gone with her and been able to enjoy it as mates. His fiance is lovely and they've got a gorgeous little one. It would be great to have a better relationship. Love to Jessie J I'm sending all of my love and prayers to Jessie J after her shock breast cancer diagnosis, it's just awful. I want to give her all of the strength in the world, I can't imagine what she's going through. I know she's got a little one too, so my heart is going out to all the family. My health anxiety has always been bad and, as I get older, hearing about people being diagnosed makes me so nervous. I have a lump on my armpit which is just swollen lymph nodes, but I've got to keep an eye on it anyway, which scares me. I recently found out my biological family history, because I never knew my dad or what health issues were on his side of the family, and my grandmother had breast cancer. Thankfully, I've been checked and i'm OK, but it's scary. A decade of love Love Island is back and I cannot wait to get stuck in - it's my guilty pleasure! We've got Love Island and then my series of Celebs Go Dating, so it's a good summer for TV! I've been so busy that I haven't seen much about the new islanders, but i'm sure they will be great. The show is celebrating ten years on TV and I really hope they do something to honour Caroline Flack - the show was her baby and she loved it. I was disappointed to see that she didn't get a tribute in the Decade Of Love special they did earlier this month, I think that's wrong. ‌ Jamie's baby joy I'm so happy for Made In Chelsea couple Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo, who have announced they're having a baby. They're a really great couple and I can't wait to see them as parents. It's such a beautiful thing to become parents for the first time and I'm wishing them all the best. I know they've been hosting Radio 1 together recently, which I think is great, but unfortunately I'm loyal to Heart FM - Amanda Holden cracks me up on the breakfast show! Back on track I'm feeling so much better this week after being run-down the last while. It's great to finally feel like myself again. I went to Oxford Natural Clinic last week to help me feel revitalised, and they topped up my Botox too, so I'm feeling glam again. Aside from filming Celebs Go Dating, which we are almost finished with, I've just been spending time with the family. Lilly has been home this week from Ireland and Molly's also just arrived, so I'm happy to have my babies back. I always love having the kids at home - it's the best feeling in the world.

Station fans had previously threatened to switch off as they slammed the decision to put Made In Chelsea star Sophie, 30, on the airwaves as "gross". Sharing an expert from an i article to Instagram, Sophie wrote on her Stories today: "Thank you @carsonsarah @theipaper. "I've been reflecting on my first week of Radio 1 and it's been such a surreal experience to connect with the nation. I love it!!!" Chief Culture Writer Sarah Carson had praised Sophie in her opinion piece, claiming - while her hiring may not be "fair - the reality star still "deserved" her place. Advertisement She wrote: "The primary function of Radio 1 in the afternoons is providing a bit of distraction, energy, and silliness as people leave work or school. "It's not supposed to be challenging, or specialist - it's low-stakes, unwind, chatty stuff that needs someone sparky on the mic between the pre-made playlists. "Habboo is likeable, a sharp wit, withering, quick to laugh, and sweet. She's smart, comfortable being open about her relationship, self-effacing, and happy to indulge a bit of nonsense (she needs to be, being married to Laing). "She feels like a friend - the kind who gives you tough love while giving your arm a gentle squeeze - and she's got charisma. That counts for a lot more than skill and experience in this landscape." Advertisement Her comments were a far cry from some listeners, who had slammed the latest hiring by bosses. On the official social media account of BBC Radio 1, fans flocked to the comments section as they claimed the station has "fallen" in standards. Vick Hope finally reveals pregnancy - and date she's going on maternity leave from BBC Radio One One disgruntled listener fumed: "How far we've fallen from Vick and Jordan…" A second exclaimed: "There is something really gross, about two such privileged and independently wealthy (the Laings)given access to prime time national radio shows over people who have trained and studied for years in media." Advertisement "Please get some good DJs back in the drive time slot. It's getting embarrassing," stated a third user. While someone else raged: "Wealthy Reality stars just being handed roles for nothing now. They're sooo unrelatable." And a fifth added: "Im a big radio 1 fan but shouldve been jerry .....jamie and sophie is a bad move be a switch off for me sorry." Many longtime fans of the station directly blamed bosses for a decline as they hired "influencers". Advertisement They slammed the decision not to look for upcoming talent or give the role to an existing cover presenter who has trained for the job "for years". Another fan noted: "Where is the dislike button? "There are so many hard working and capable presenters covering gigs on R1 atm, how undermining that they weren't given the chance to show the listeners what they're capable of!!" Someone else agreed" "Really glad I'm not the only one who was disappointed by this update. Advertisement "It really doesn't sit right with me when there's people trying so hard to get a break. It's a no from me I'm afraid." Please get some good DJs back in the drive time slot. It's getting embarrassing Radio 1 fan While another added: "I think I'll be finding a different radio station to listen to for my 'going home' slot in the week now. "Something just doesn't sit right with me, that his wife has got the job… when there must be some amazing local talent & those that have worked really hard in the industry that will have been overlooked for celebrity privilege…" One more fan stated: "Radio 1 turning into a constant influencer podcast.. what happened to actually knowing music to being a radio DJ! Many years of listening, only holding on for Greg! Time to switch!" Ringo Starr admits 'I didn't practice' on drums but still improved as musician

Beatle Ringo Starr admits he only likes to be on drums when there is an audience Ringo Starr has insisted he got by with help from his friends when it comes to drumming. The Beatle says he didn't become a top drummer through practice, but simply by constant performing with pals. The Fab Four beat man described prepping moves at his home alone as 'boring" and never took lessons. ‌ Ringo, 84, admitted that his work behind the kit improved because he just went out and played shows. And at that started as a teenager working in a school equipment factory playing with pals to workers during lunch breaks. Asked whether he spent hours in his bedroom or having lessons to become so good behind the kit, Ringo confessed: 'I didn't. I hate practicing. ‌ 'I hated sitting there. I tried it when I first got the kit upstairs in the back room like in all those movies that were made. And it was the most boring thing ever. "I did all my learning with other musicians, other bands. I was lucky because there were a lot of us around and we weren't all great players. We were all learning. 'So I learned everything with everyone else at that time in Liverpool." Ringo got lucky by having pals who loved to do jam sessions during lunchtimes at their local factory. 'But I was lucky in the factory. The guy who lived next door to me in the street worked in the factory. He was Eddie Miles, a great ‌ guitarist. He's just one of those guys, who could play anything. And my best friend Roy had made a tea chest bass and I had a snare drum and brushes. 'And we used to play to the men at lunchtime in the basement. And that's how I started. And now look at me.' Ringo recalled to AXS TV in the US how he had a great well respected role as a drummer with a bigger band than The Beatles in the early 1960s. ‌ Ringo did the rhythms for Rory Storm And The Hurricanes, who were Liverpool's top act with bigger audiences and respect than John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best. But Ringo boasted that he adored their work and would always be in the audience cheering them at gig. "I loved them from Germany where we met really. We were playing as Rory and Hurricanes and the Beatles on the same club. And I loved John, Paul and George. I just loved that front line and I'd be there for the last gig just sitting there watching the front line requesting songs. "So when they asked me to join I had no hesitation, but people did say, 'are you going to leave Rory?; I said, 'yeah, yeah, I'm going to leave and make a step up' Ringo and his All Starr Band have announced a run of autumn tour dates, built around a six date residency at The Venetian in Las Vegas.
