Attenborough Ocean film 'greatest message he's ever told'

BBC News05-05-2025

Sir David Attenborough is launching what he says is one of the most important films of his career as he enters his hundredth year.He believes his new, cinema-length film Ocean could play a decisive role in saving biodiversity and protecting the planet from climate change.Sir David, who will be 99 on Thursday, says: "After almost 100 years on the planet, I now understand the most important place on land is not on Earth but at sea."The ocean is the planet's support system and humanity's greatest ally against climate catastrophe, the film argues. It shows how the world's oceans are at a crossroads.A blue carpet will be rolled out at the film's premiere tonight at the Royal Festival Hall.A host of celebrities are expected to attend including Chris Martin and Coldplay, Benedict Cumberbatch, astronaut Tim Peake, Geri Halliwell-Horner and Simon LeBon.Toby Nowlan, who produced Ocean, says this new production is not a typical Attenborough film. "This is not about seeing brand new natural history behaviours. It is the greatest message he's ever told," he says. The film documents how the state of the world's oceans and our understanding of how they function have changed in the course of Sir David's lifetime.
Sir David remembers his first scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef way back in 1957: "I was so taken aback by the spectacle before me I forgot – momentarily – to breathe."Since then, there has been a catastrophic decline in life in the world's oceans. "We are almost out of time," he warns.Ocean contains some of the most graphic footage of the damage that bottom trawling – a common fishing practice around the world - can do to the seabed. It is a vivid example of how industrial fishing can drain the life from the world's oceans, Sir David claims. The new footage shows how the chain that the trawlers drag behind them scours the seafloor, forcing the creatures it disturbs into the net behind. The trawlers are often after a single species: more than three-quarters of what they catch may be discarded."It's hard to imagine a more wasteful way to catch fish," comments Sir David. The process also releases vast amounts of carbon dioxide which contributes to the warming of our planet, yet bottom trawling is not just legal but is actively encouraged by many governments.
Sir David says the state of the ocean has almost made him lose hope for the future of life on the planet. What has kept him from despair is what he calls the "most remarkable discovery of all" – that the ocean can "recover faster than we had ever imagined".Sir David says the story of the world's whales has been a source of huge optimism for him.It is estimated that 2.9 million whales were killed by the whaling industry in the 20th Century alone. Scientists have said it is the largest cull of any animal in history when measured in terms of total biomass. It pushed almost all whale species to the edge of extinction.Just one per cent of Blue Whales were left, recalls Sir David: "I remember thinking that was it. There was no coming back, we had lost the great whales."But in 1986 lawmakers bowed to public pressure and banned commercial whaling worldwide. The whale population has rapidly recovered since then. One of the film's directors, Keith Scholey, has worked with Sir David for 44 years. "When I first met David, I was in shorts," he jokes. That was in 1981, two years after Sir David had resigned as the BBC's director of programmes – one of the most senior jobs at the Corporation. "He'd done one career, and he was off on his next."Despite now nearing his 99th birthday Sir David is still remarkably energetic, says Scholey. "Every time you work with David, you learn something new," he says. "It's really good fun. But also, David keeps you on your mettle, because he is so on his mettle and so, you know, it's always a very creative process."
Sir David's key message in the Ocean film is that all is not lost. Countries have promised to protect a third of the world's oceans. He hopes his new film will spur leaders to take firm action on this promise at a UN conference next month. He believes that could be transformational. "The ocean can bounce back to life," Sir David says. "If left alone it may not just recover but thrive beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen."A healthier ocean ecosystem would also be able to trap more carbon dioxide, helping protect the world from climate change, according to scientists."In front of us is a chance to protect our climate, our food, our home," Sir David says.As he celebrates his 99th birthday this week he is still fighting to protect the natural world he has worked his lifetime to show to us in all its glory.Ocean will be in cinemas across the country from Thursday.

Two issues that brought Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson to a breaking point as actress was ‘desperate' for it to work

DAKOTA Johnson was 'desperate' for her and Chris Martin to work out and was often left in tears by their on/off romance, a source has claimed. The actress, 35, and Coldplay singer, 48, were engaged for years after first being linked in 2017 but never made it official. 5 5 5 PEOPLE revealed on Wednesday that they have broken up again, with an insider saying, "It feels final this time." Dakota was last seen with Chris in Malibu just two weeks ago, and they were also seen holding hands in India during Coldplay's recent tour in January. But they have now called it quits and will be focusing on their respective careers. A source told The U.S. Sun that the 13-year age gap and the topic of children had often caused problems. "Dakota has been desperate for her and Chris to work out for years, and every time they broke up she was devastated and in tears," they said. "Even some of Dakota's team would have to console her when they were apart and she could never move on. "She really loves him and his children, and he deeply loves her, but things were just never lining up for them and it was very up and down. "They really tried to work through their issues but the age gap was often a problem and she'd expressed that she may want children in the future, whereas Chris is kind of done with that part of his life but they discussed it." It'll be hard for both of them to move on." A source told The U.S. Sun They added that they had been "back and forth on issues for years" and tried to figure out a future. "They made some beautiful memories as a family and it'll be hard for both of them to move on after such a long relationship but they will do it," they said. It's believed the pair now feel it's time to start a new chapter but will remain on good terms amid the breakup. The U.S. Sun has reached out to Dakoke and Chris's reps for comment. Dakota is currently focused on her acting career as she is set to appear in the new rom-com The Materialists alongside Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. She spoke about relationships in an interview with the Los Angeles Times this week while promoting the upcoming movie. Dakota said, "For a long time we've all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world. When people should get married. Divorce is bad. All these things that actually, if you think about it, why is divorce bad?' she said. 'Why do people have to get married, or at a certain age or only once? Why? It doesn't matter." Chris famously split from actress wife Gwyneth Paltrow in March 2014 after more than a decade of marriage. He reportedly got engaged to Dakota some years ago and she called his kids her "step-children". Chris, shares daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19, with his ex Gwyneth, 53. A complete timeline of Chris and Dakota's relationship The pair sparked dating rumors in 2017 after meeting through friends. In January 2018, they stepped out in public together for the first time and were seen going for walks on the beach in Malibu. Later that month, Dakota's famous dad Don confirmed their romance and said, "She's a big girl; she can handle herself." In September 2018, their whirlwind romance stepped up when they got matching tattoos. Weeks later, TMZ falsely reported they were expecting a baby and Dakota said, "The only thing I'm pregnant with is a lot of really good ideas." In 2019, they split for the first time - but reunited just two months later. The following year Chris gave Dakota the honor of directing his music video for Coldplay's hit Cry Cry Cry. Over the years, they were faced with further rumors of trouble in paradise. In December 2021, Dakota spoke about life with Chris in an interview with Elle, saying, "We go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it's nice to be at home and be cozy and private." In 2024, it was reported they had been secretly engaged for years but had split again. They brushed off the rumors at the time by putting on a united front and their rep insisted, "They are happily together." Dakota spoke of her close relationship with Chris's kids in an interview with Bustle. She said, "I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart. "How do I feel about motherhood? I'm so open to that. "I've gotten to this place where I really want to experience everything life has to offer. 'And especially being a woman, I'm like: 'What a magical f***ing thing to do. What a crazy, magical, wild experience. "If that's meant to happen for me, I'm totally down for it. "We're not here for very long, so if I'm meant to be a mother, bring it on." Dakota also has the seal of approval from Gwyneth, who attended her 30th birthday party. She said about Chris and Dakota, "I love her. "I can see how it would seem weird because it's sort of unconventional. "But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her. "I always start to think of the —what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by?" She explained, "It's not like there's a finish line: 'Oh, we consciously uncoupled; we're done.' "It's a lifelong commitment to constantly reinvent your relationship with your ex, which you do presumably because you have children together. "I don't see a reason to do it if you don't have children together. Some people do. "But I think we put all the hard work in at the beginning. I would say very rarely is it difficult now." 5

Rumours about their relationship had been swirling for months and it has now been confirmed Dakota, 35, and Chris, 48, have gone their separate ways. 2 A source told the Mail: "Their relationship has been over for a long time, they just haven't been able to figure out to make it official. Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much." The source said they tried the age old technique of spending time away from each other but the absences didn't lead to their hearts growing fonder. The pair were pictured holding hands in January at the Babulnath Temple, Mumbai, where Coldplay were touring. It followed Dakota, who is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, working on new romance movie Materialist with co-stars Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in New York. EXCLUSIVE Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin SPLIT: Hollywood couple end romance after eight years and engagement

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have split after a near-eight year romance, can confirm. Actress Johnson, 35, and Coldplay frontman Martin, 48, first sparked up a relationship in 2017 and got engaged several years ago - but have now gone their separate ways. A source told 'Their relationship has been over for a long time, they just haven't been able to figure out to make it official. Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much. 'Breakups aren't instant and they continued to breakup and makeup and sometimes things would work when they were away from each other, while they were working because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but then they'd get back together and little things just kept adding up to where they weren't right for each other anymore. 'Dakota is devastated that she isn't going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them.' has reached out to representatives for Johnson and Martin for comment but did not immediately hear back. Johnson was last pictured Sunday stepping out with Martin's ex Jennifer Lawrence, and without her engagement ring. DailyMail first reported trouble between the pair in August 2024 but a rep later confirmed they were still together. The pair had a brief rumored split in 2019 which was alleged to be over him pushing for them to have children, but they quickly got back together. Martin famously split from actress wife Gwyneth Paltrow, the mother of his two children Apple, 21, and Moses, 19, in March 2014 after ten years of marriage. The then-Hollywood power couple described their separation at the time as a 'conscious uncoupling' and had their divorce finalized in July 2016. Martin was reported to be in an on and off relationship with actress Annabelle Wallis before they split in August 2017. He was first seen with Dakota at a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles in October 2017 when they were reported to be 'cozy, laughing and affectionate'. Dakota, the daughter of Don Johnson, 75, and Melanie Griffith, 68, was spotted a month later at a Coldplay concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina, leading to fans posing social media pictures of her enjoying the show. The couple were seen out on more dates around Los Angeles in early 2018. But it was nearly a year later that they made their first openly public appearance together at Stella McCartney's Autumn 2018 Collection show in LA. Dakota's father, Don, appeared to confirm his daughter's relationship with Martin in an interview with Digital Spy when he joked: "Yeah, that's... uh troubling, isn't it? No, she's a big girl, she can handle herself!' Her actress mother also opened up about Martin during a Global Gift Foundation USA Women's Empowerment Luncheon, when she said: 'I adore him!' Dakota appeared to confirm her relationship with Martin in an interview with Tatler in September 2018 when she said: 'I'm not going to talk about it, but I am very happy.' The following November, she is said to have met Paltrow, her new husband Brad Falchuk, and Martin's children at a Thanksgiving dinner A source told PEOPLE at the time: 'They're a total modern family and had a great time celebrating together.' The couple were spotted again with Paltrow and Falchuk on the beach in the Hamptons, New York, in August 2019. Paltrow opened up about her ex-husband's relationship with Dakota in a 2020 interview with Harper's Bazaar, describing how the actress had become part of her family. She said: 'I love her. I can see how it would seem weird because it's sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.' Johnson gushed over Martin's children in a 2024 interview, saying: 'I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.'
