Inter want Inzaghi to stay despite record final defeat

Yahoo4 days ago

Inter Milan are happy with boss Simone Inzaghi and want him to stay despite their record Champions League final defeat by Paris St-Germain, says club president Giuseppe Marotta.
The team came in for heavy criticism from their fans and the Italian media after a humiliating 5-0 loss in the showpiece final in Munich.

Inzaghi, who was appointed in 2021, has been heavily linked to Saudi club Al-Hilal, but Inter president Marotta says he is happy for him to stay.
"This defeat will not have an impact," added Marotta on Inzaghi, who has one year to run on his contract.
"Almost all the credit for this positive cycle is due to his professionalism and abilities. If he wants to continue, we are happy."
Inzaghi has delivered one Serie A title and won the Coppa Italia twice during his four years in charge.
Inter had beaten Bayern Munich and Barcelona on their way to the final but Saturday was their second Champions League final defeat in three seasons, with Inzaghi's side losing 1-0 against Manchester City in Istanbul in 2023.

Defeat by PSG means Inter end this season without a major trophy, after finishing one point behind champions Napoli in Serie A and losing to AC Milan in their Coppa Italia semi-final.
On the eve of the Champions League final, former Lazio boss Inzaghi told reporters he did not want to discuss his future, adding he would have a "relaxed" meeting with club owners afterwards.
After the final, the Inter boss was again asked about his future.
"We'll see in the next few days with the club," he said.
"After a final like this - the second one lost in three years - there's too much disappointment to try to think. There will be time to talk about it calmly with my club, which was with us again tonight and is always present."

Marotta said Inter would be "honoured" to continue with Inzaghi.
"We are meeting with the coach because this club is not used to letting a manager go into the final year of his contract," added Marotta.
"There is no revolution under way. We will meet to hear what he has to say - I repeat, on our part, we are very proud and honoured to continue with him."
Inter will take part in the newly expanded Fifa Club World Cup, which takes place in the United States between 14 June and 13 July.
Their first game is against Mexico's Monterrey on 18 June in Pasadena (02:00 BST).

'Nightmare' - tears & disappointment after crushing defeat
There were reports that up to 40,000 Inter fans travelled to Munich for the final.
Many of the 18,000 who had a ticket left the Allianz Arena well before full-time as PSG dominated from start to finish, scoring in the 12th, 20th, 63rd, 73rd and 86th minutes.
In addition, about 51,000 supporters gathered at San Siro, Inter's home, to watch the final on a big screen.
For many, the tears and disappointment were plain to see, as a night meant for celebration turned into one of soul-searching.
"Why lose like tonight? To say that hurts, very bad," Inter fan Frederico told Reuters outside the Allianz Arena.

At the San Siro, Inter fan Davide Radice was asked why it went spectacularly wrong.

"That's something you have to ask Inzaghi and the team. Everything did not work," he said.
Meanwhile, the embarrassing margin of defeat was labelled a "nightmare" by Italy's respected daily sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"For Inter, it was the worst match of the year - and of history? - in the most important match of the entire season, after losing the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa," it added.
"In March, after [beating] Feyenoord, Inzaghi raised three fingers to indicate the "treble". All he has left is his fist."
Rome sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport added: "Two years ago, Inter emerged from the defeat against [Manchester] City with their legs and spirit shattered but their minds stronger.

"Last night, on a warm early summer night in Bavaria, Inter left the wonderful Allianz Arena in Munich in pieces. From every point of view."

In Or Out – Next 24-48 Hours Decisive For Inter Milan Pursuit Of Cesc Fabregas

In Or Out – Next 24-48 Hours Decisive For Inter Milan Pursuit Of Cesc Fabregas The next 24-48 hours will be decisive for Inter Milan in their efforts to make Como's Cesc Fabregas their next coach. This according to today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Advertisement The last couple of days have been an absolute whirlwind at Inter Milan. On Monday, Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi officially stepped down after four years in charge. The 49-year-old then officially became the coach of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Inter have made Como coach Cesc Fabregas their top target to replace Inzaghi. Advertisement Yesterday, Nerazzurri Sporting Director Piero Ausilio was in London. And he did meet with Fabregas there. The Nerazzuri executive looked to convince Fabregas on the club's project. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Inter have also had to deal with Como, who will hardly be keen to lose hold of their coach. As of yet, there is still a lot of uncertainty on both fronts. Fabregas, for his part, has neither accepted nor rejected a move to Inter. And Como have not yet green lighted the move. But the uncertainty won't be hanging around for long. The Gazzetta report that, whether Fabregas decides to join Inter or stay at Como, it will be in the next 24-48 hours. He could be Inter's new coach by the start of the weekend.

Sandro Tonali and the tactical tweak that changed the face of Newcastle's season

The 2024–25 season was undeniably one of the best in Newcastle's history. Not only did they clinch their first domestic trophy in 70 years after defeating Liverpool 2–1 to lift the Carabao Cup, but they also secured Champions League qualification for the second time in three years after edging out Aston Villa on goal difference. Advertisement However, heading into the festive period, things were looking very different for Eddie Howe's side. Despite still being in both domestic cups, a resounding 4–2 loss away at Brentford on December 7 left them 12th in the table, with seemingly nothing to play for in the league. But a run of nine straight wins in all competitions — including six in the league — transformed Newcastle's season. Unsurprisingly, it coincided with Sandro Tonali beginning to make his newfound No 6 role, — where he was first deployed against Crystal Palace on November 30 — his own. On the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, Taylor Payne and George Caulkin discussed how pushing Tonali deeper changed the face of Newcastle's midfield and their season. A partial transcript has been edited for this article. The full episode is available on the 'Pod On The Tyne' feed on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Taylor: George, after a mixed start to the season, there was a remarkable uptick in form, consistency, attitude and application, and all over the pitch Newcastle seemed to kick into gear. That midfield rejig we touched on earlier was really the springboard for it all wasn't it? George: Yeah it was, and that had actually happened before results turned around, but only only just before they did. It was the 1-1 draw away at Crystal Palace where Tonali had been moved back into that deeper position. It's funny because we talk about it as being a defensive role, but Tonali still manages to run more than anybody else. So that idea of him just sitting in front of the back four, tidying things up and playing the ball simply, that's just not what he does. He's absolutely everywhere, that's the incredible thing about him. But it was such a big deal, and they saw signs in there that perhaps that was the answer. It took another major reset after Brentford away, and we all heard on this podcast how that loss affected Chris. I've never heard of a flatter or more broken Chris before. But then they were fortunate to play against a Leicester team after that who were so naive that day in mid-December, and were battered 4-0. They were precisely the opponents that Newcastle needed. Advertisement Having that week of total reset at the training ground was vital. Howe took all his players aside and tried to explain to them that what was happening wasn't acceptable. And that God forbid if any of the players wanted to leave, the only way they could do that was by playing well for Newcastle. He was also trying to get into their heads by showing them clips of where it was going wrong and starting again. The players themselves had a meeting, and they knew it wasn't right. Then finally when it clicked, they just didn't look back. But that run of games where they got nine wins in a row was extraordinary because it took them to mid-January, and by that time the season was beginning to look very different. Taylor: Steven Levy on X agrees with us, and he said, 'The moment of the season was when Howe saw the light and moved Tonali to play No. 6, everything changed from that point on.' George: I must say that there is this idea that Eddie Howe was reluctant to play Tonali in that position, and I honestly think that's unfair. When Tonali arrived at the start of the previous season, there was talk of Newcastle playing with a sort of double-pivot. The idea was that Tonali and Bruno were interchangeable, where one would go and the other would stay. Whether or not that would have come to fruition, we don't know because it wasn't working seamlessly at that point. But then Tonali was obviously out of the team for a while, so when he came back into the team this season it took him a while to adjust. To play in a position where you're going to end up running more than anybody else, you can't just do that straight away on day one. So it's taken him time to get his match fitness back. And running was one of the very specific things that Howe and his staff worked on with Tonali. There were specific things that the coaches were doing with Tonali to get him up to speed, Chris and I wrote about this earlier in the season. They took apart his running action and started again with it, which made him more efficient and changed his gate. So you're now left with a player who runs more than any other player in the Newcastle team, and more than anyone else in most other Premier League midfields. That has been massively beneficial for Newcastle. But to say that it was down to Eddie Howe to see the light about where he could play, that's only part of it. It's also about the player himself understanding what's being asked of him, and the changes to his technique that were implemented during his time out. So I just think it's slightly more rounded than that, but his impact this season can't be overstated.
