TAIPEI: Taiwan said China escalated military pressure around the region in May, deploying dozens of warships and government vessels daily in what it described as an extreme pressure campaign.
China sent an average of 50 to 70 vessels per day across the first island chain - a key strategic arc stretching from Japan through Taiwan and the Philippines - between May 1 and 27, said a senior Taiwanese security official, who asked not to be identified, citing government protocol.
The official, who spoke at a briefing on Thursday (May 29), called it a record high for May, though did not provide comparable figures from last year. A document shared at the briefing showed the scale and range of the deployments stretching from the Yellow Sea to the East and South China Seas.
Tensions have steadily risen since President Lai Ching-te took office in May last year. Beijing, which views the democratic island as part of its territory, has called Lai a separatist and carried out at least seven sets of military drills around the island since his inauguration, a pace not seen in previous years.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday urged partners in Asia to raise defense spending toward five per cent of gross domestic product, warning that more urgency is needed to prepare for a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
Chinese activity peaked around May 27, when more than 70 vessels - mostly naval - were observed operating in the region, according to the Taipei official. Two aircraft carriers, the Shandong and Liaoning, took part in the activities last month, with the Liaoning conducting takeoff and landing drills for warplanes in the East China Sea for the first time, the official said.
Chinese patrols also appeared to press closer to Taiwan's 24-nautical mile boundary during joint combat exercises, which the Taipei official said go far beyond Beijing's defense needs.
Separate data from Taiwan's Defence Ministry shows around 254 Chinese warships and government vessels were spotted around the archipelago over May 1-27, averaging nine a day, according to Bloomberg calculations. That's slightly up from an average of seven a day last year, the data shows. - Bloomberg

Justice Dept accuses 2 Chinese researchers of smuggling 'potential agroterrorism weapon' into US

WASHINGTON: US federal prosecutors have accused two Chinese nationals of smuggling a dangerous biological pathogen that had the potential to be used as an agricultural terrorism weapon into the United States for research. The US Department of Justice on Tuesday identified the pathogen as Fusarium graminearum, a fungus it said was classified in scientific literature as a potential agroterrorism weapon. In a statement, it said that the fungus causes "head blight" in some crops and is responsible for billions of US dollars in economic losses globally each year. According to an FBI criminal complaint, Zunyong Liu, 34, a researcher currently in China, brought the fungus into the United States while visiting his girlfriend, Yunqing Jian, 33, in July 2024. He admitted to smuggling in the fungus so he could conduct research on it at a University of Michigan laboratory where his girlfriend worked, according to the complaint. The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment. According to the complaint, an examination of electronic communications between the two indicated that they discussed shipping biological materials and research being done in the laboratory prior to Liu's arrival. Jian and Liu were accused in the complaint of conspiracy, smuggling goods into the United States, false statements and visa fraud. Cheyvoryea Gibson, special agent in charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, said the pair's actions "posed an imminent threat to public safety." Jian was expected to appear in court in Detroit, Michigan, on Tuesday. A judge appointed a public defender, who could not be immediately reached for comment, to represent Jian.

Kasada targets first North Africa hotel deal

Kasada Capital aims to close a fund for investments in Morocco by the end of the year. — Bloomberg ABU DHABI: Kasada Capital Management, a private equity firm backed by Qatar's US$524bil sovereign wealth fund, expects to strike a hotel deal in Morocco in the first half of 2026, marking its entry into North Africa's booming hospitality and tourism industry. The hospitality-focused firm, whose backers include the Qatar Investment Authority and French hotel group Accor SA, has set up an office in Casablanca to assess opportunities and aims to close a fund for investments in Morocco by the end of the year. The North African Kingdom received 17.4 million tourists last year. That eclipsed Egypt as the most visited country in Africa. The country is expected to draw soccer fans from all over the world when it holds the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2025-26, and co-hosts the FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal in 2030. 'North Africa is a priority for us,' Olivier Granet, Kasada's managing partner and co-chief executive officer, said in an interview. 'Morocco is, today, the number one tourism destination on the African continent,' Granet said. 'And, for us, to become the leading platform we have to become pan- African.' Kasada has focused on sub-Saharan Africa since closing its first fund of about US$500mil in 2019. Its portfolio of 19 hotels across seven countries in the region include South Africa's iconic Cape Grace as well as upscale Pullman-branded properties in major cities in Kenya, Ivory Coast and Senegal. Africa is a burgeoning market for travel driven by strong economic growth, an expanding middle class, increasing consumer-spending power and growing air connectivity. It was the best-performing tourism region in the world in 2024 after the Middle East, with foreign arrivals 7% above pre-pandemic levels, according to the United Nations tourism agency. Kasada's ambitions for Morocco dovetail with its plans to grow its portfolio across the budget and luxury hotel segments in key cities in sub-Saharan Africa, while balancing the revenue earned from letting out rooms with that from its food and beverage, co-working and events offerings. 'The African continent is, frankly, enormous but the penetration levels are still fairly low,' said David Damiba, Kasada's managing partner and co-chief executive officer. 'We think that there's scope to increase the scale of what we've built already by a factor of two to three times fairly easily in these markets while being concentrated to take advantage of our scale in core cities.' — Bloomberg

Tesla UK Sales Fall 45% in May Despite BEV Market Growth

TESLA'S new car sales in Britain tumbled more than 45% from a year earlier in May, preliminary data from research group New AutoMotive showed on Wednesday. The automaker, which has been losing market share in part because of CEO Elon Musk's embrace of far-right politics in Europe, sold 1,758 units in Britain last month, down from 3,244 a year earlier, the data showed. Yet, Tesla remained the best-selling battery electric vehicle in Britain so far this year. Overall new car registrations in the UK increased 4.3% to 144,098 units in May, according to New AutoMotive, with BEV sales rising 28% year-on-year. Among Chinese rivals, BYD more than doubled its new car sales in the UK to 1,388 units during the month.
