NBA Mock Draft Suggests Timberwolves Pick Thomas Sorber to Replace Rudy Gobert
NBA Mock Draft Suggests Timberwolves Pick Thomas Sorber to Replace Rudy Gobert originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Minnesota Timberwolves front office is making big decisions this offseason, which could drastically hurt or improve their chances of contending for future championships. After back-to-back exits from the Western Conference Finals, it's clear something has to change.

The team's already one of the select few teams that could make a trade with the Phoenix Suns for Kevin Durant, with the Miami Heat another mentioned. Adding KD would seriously boost Minnesota's starting lineup and scoring, but it's going to mean parting ways with other roster members.
Speculation has suggested that either Julius Randle or Rudy Gobert will need to be included in a deal for Durant. Losing either of these bigs would seriously alter the team's frontcourt.

Both provide double-double capabilities, with Gobert adding his defensive presence. Towns, who they acquired in a trade with New York last season, gives a talented inside and outside player capable of scoring in the paint or from downtown.

According to ESPN, NBA insider Dave McMenamin speculated that a potential trade for the Wolves to get Durant from the Suns might include Gobert, not Randle.
With the 2025 NBA Draft approaching, the front office will need to determine the best player to take with the No. 17 pick. Various mock drafts have given different answers for the college star, but focus on selecting a big man to join the frontcourt.
One of those answers is Georgetown Hoyas forward Thomas Sorber. The 19-year-old is 6-foot-9, and while that's not quite Gobert's height, The Athletic's Zach Harper suggests Sorber could be an ideal replacement for him.
Sorber averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, two blocks, and 1.5 steals per game in his one season with the Hoyas.

According to NBADraft.net, Sorber 'plays bigger than his frame' with an impressive wingspan. The outlet compared him to previous NBA big men Roy Hibbert and Vin Baker, both of whom were multi-time All-Stars.
Sorber isn't among the first 13 players ESPN reported were invited to sit in the green room for the upcoming draft. However, BYU's Egor Denim and Georgia's Asa Newell, two other big men that mock drafts have speculated Minnesota could pick, both got invites.
The 2025 NBA Draft begins on Wednesday, June 25 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Stephen A. Smith Accuses Major U.S. City Of Being Unsafe
Stephen A. Smith Accuses Major U.S. City Of Being Unsafe originally appeared on The Spun. For the third time in just the past week, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith has gone viral in the NBA community. Roughly a week ago, Smith made headlines for calling out Tyrese Haliburton. This came after the Indiana Pacers defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. By the time Game 4 came around, Smith received criticism for playing solitaire on his phone while at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Advertisement Fast forward to this Tuesday, and Smith is receiving pushback for suggesting an NBA city is unsafe for players. He made this comment during a "First Take" segment about Ja Morant's future with the Memphis Grizzlies. Smith claims NBA players have told him they don't feel safe in Memphis. "The people in Memphis, it's a great sports town, great fans, great people, but there's an element there where cats like Jimmy Butler and others don't feel like it's the safest environment," Smith said. "I'm talking to the local authorities in Memphis. You've got to clean some of that stuff up because it's dissuasive to NBA players. They have talked about it. I know, they've told me. That's all I'm saying." LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 08: Sports television personality Stephen A. (Photo by)It's certainly possible players shared that information with Smith, we know for sure that Morant isn't one of his sources. Advertisement Earlier this afternoon, Morant called out Smith for dissing Memphis on national television. "Talkin bout the grizz more than the finals wit these [cap emoji] ahh sources," Morant wrote on X. "Instead of focusing on the performances we seen from jdub/shai , tj/siakam, how this series is going. we say sumn negative about a city/team on a national level." Smith has not yet replied to Morant's comments. Perhaps he's saving his response for Wednesday's episode of "First Take." Related: Stephen A. Commanders Running Back Turns Heads In Important Offseason
Commanders Running Back Turns Heads In Important Offseason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Throughout his three-year career with the Washington Commanders, running back Brian Robinson Jr. has been as dependable a player as the franchise could hope for. Advertisement The issue is that they may need more production than Robinson has given. The former third-round pick out of Alabama has recorded over 700 yards rushing in his first three seasons in the league and has averaged over four yards a carry in his career. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, though, Robinson knows he needs to do more than be a dependable player. He will need to excel in 2025 if he wants a lucrative extension. Or at least good enough to get him a nice contract on the open market. The good news for Washington is that Robinson's mindset has been clear. He has participated in off-season workouts while playing at a very high level. Advertisement "B-Rob's a guy who has played an incredibly high level," offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said on the team's website. "I thought early in the year when he was really healthy, he was what we expect him to be, and the focus this offseason has been great. "He knows what this year means to him and can mean to us when he plays at that level." Robinson knows he's sharing a backfield with Austin Ekeler. The two pose an intriguing attack for Washington's ground game and are one of the best duos in the league. Both will be free agents after this season, though. If Robinson or Ekeler want an extension, they must produce even more than last year. Robinson has gotten an early start in that regard. Commanders Draw Comparison To AFC Contender
Commanders Draw Comparison To AFC Contender originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders had one of the most remarkable turnarounds in league history last season. After a dismal 2023 season, the Commanders won eight more games than the year prior and reached the conference title game for the first time in 30 years. Advertisement The tricky part for Washington is sustaining that level of success. While many people believe the organization should be easily able to accomplish that, one AFC team should serve as a reality check going forward. Much like the Commanders in 2023, the Houston Texans were one of the worst football teams in 2022. They had the second-overall pick in the draft, took a quarterback, and completely revamped their coaching staff. It all helped them win the division title and a playoff game two years ago. Houston made the playoffs in 2024, but they took a step back as a contender. That is why Bleacher Report writer Alex Ballentine thinks the Commanders should try to strive for better in their second season of this regime. Advertisement "C.J. Stroud wasn't quite as impactful as a rookie as Daniels was. He did, however, lift the Texans offense from the worst in the league to at least above-average as a rookie," Ballentine wrote. "The Texans then got aggressive and signed Stefon Diggs and traded for Joe Mixon. It looked like they were set to become a top-five they didn't make that jump." Ballentine compared Washington's significant offseason additions this year to the moves made by Houston last year. It's a clear reminder that what worked for a rebuilding team in one season is not guaranteed to do so for the next. And exactly why the Commander's comparisons to Houston may be more accurate than initially thought.
