Jared Cannonier acknowledges current 'gatekeeper' position before UFC Fight Night 251 headliner
LAS VEGAS – Jared Cannonier doesn't feel like he's the UFC's middleweight gatekeeper but understands why it may appear as such.
In 2022, Cannonier (17-8 MMA, 10-8 UFC) came up short in a title shot against then-champion Israel Adesanya. He has since gone 2-2, with both losses coming back-to-back in 2024.
In the UFC Fight Night 251 main event Saturday at the UFC Apex, 'The Killa Gorilla' aims to rebound against Gregory Rodrigues, a rising contender on a three-fight winning streak. On paper, it's a big step up in competition for Rodrigues (16-5 MMA, 7-2 UFC).
'I think he's pretty much earned what he's done,' Cannonier told reporters at Wednesday's media day. 'I guess you can consider me the sacrificial lamb in that regard, right? This is the name of the game: we fight each other. I try to separate the emotional aspect from what we're doing here.
'This is a business. We're doing business. So that's just it. Plus, my last two fights were of the same essence, if you will. … Same situation again.'
Cannonier is currently promotionally ranked No. 7 in the middleweight division, whereas Rodrigues is unranked. Although he's hesitant to put the dreaded gatekeeper label on himself, Cannonier gets why it looks that way.
Cannonier held the No. 5 spot when he fought No. 12-ranked Caio Borralho, the widest gap in rankings for a matchup since his title shot. Even though it was Fight of the Night, Cannonier walked away with a second straight loss, which followed a fourth-round finish by Nassourdine Imavov.
Now, Cannonier gets an opponent on the outside looking in, someone who is hungry to make a statement against a top 10 fighter. When asked if the division is currently set up to allow challengers to rise the rankings quickly, Cannonier said it depends on the fighters holding those lower numbers next to their name.
'I don't know, that onus will be put on the guys who are facing off against the contenders, i.e. myself,' Cannonier said. 'I'm losing these fights against the up and comers and opening the door for them. I don't want to say it, but it's not that I've found myself in a gatekeeper sort of position, but it kind of smells like it if you're on the outside, know what I mean?
'I'm just analyzing it for you. You're asking the question; I'm doing some analysis on it. This isn't how I feel. I don't really consider all this sh*t when I'm thinking about what I'm doing on a daily basis or when I'm matching up with these guys. I'm just getting prepared to go to war with another big up and comer.'

Michael Bisping: 'Patchy Mix sh*t the bed' in UFC debut
Michael Bisping: 'Patchy Mix sh*t the bed' in UFC debut Michael Bisping was brutally honest about Patchy Mix for talking a big game but failing to deliver in his UFC debut. Mix (20-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) lost a unanimous decision to streaking bantamweight contender Mario Bautista (16-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) on Saturday's UFC 316 main card. He looked tentative and was outstruck. The elite grappler also attempted just one takedown, which was easily stuffed by Bautista. "Patchy Mix sh*t the bed," Bisping said on his "Believe You Me" podcast. The former Bellator champion was very confident heading into the fight, calling himself the best bantamweight in the sport and one of the most hyped prospects to ever sign with the UFC. He also heavily dismissed Bautista, which is what Bisping mainly took issue with. "Especially after the confidence and the sh*t talk at the press conference, and the way that he just dismissed the threat of Bautista," Bisping added. "It was a forgone conclusion that (he's) going to walk in here, destroy everybody, become the champion. Then you go up against Bautista, who is chipping away in the background, beating people like Jose Aldo but doesn't get the fan recognition if we're being honest, but a tough guy to beat. "He was beaten soundly. He wasn't in the fight. He didn't really do much. On the striking numbers, it was surprising because they were kind of close. But Bautista was clipping him, he was landing good shots, and every time Patchy Mix took a shot, he was pulling his face. It was like, 'Oh, I didn't like that one.' That's not a good idea because if it's close, the judges are going to go, 'Well, you were reacting every single time to those shots.'"

Netflix to stream Canelo Alvarez title defense in September
Netflix to stream Canelo Alvarez title defense in September Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez will return to the ring in September to face undefeated Terence Crawford in a bout streamed live on Netflix. The battle for the unified Super Middleweight title will take place September 13 in Las Vegas, according to a news release from the Saudi Boxing Federation, which is promoting the match in partnership with UFC chairman Dana White. 'I'm super happy to be making history again and this time on a Riyadh Season Card that will be broadcast on Netflix," Alvarez said in the release. "On September 13, I'm ready to show once again that I am the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.' Alvarez will take a 62-2-2 record into the fight. Crawford is 41-0 with 31 knockouts. The bout comes roughly 10 months after Netflix rode a wave of massive public interest in its production of Jake Paul's unanimous decision over Mike Tyson last November, which tallied upwards of 65 million streams. However, Netflix's first foray into live boxing also suffered from a rash of technical glitches that drew widespread frustration and criticism from viewers. The streaming giant also pulled in another 65 million combined viewers on its two NFL broadcasts on Christmas Day 2024. But perhaps more significantly, the glitches that plagued the Paul-Tyson bout were largely corrected. Netflix's says its live coverage of Alvarez vs. Crawford will be available to its more than 300 million worldwide subscribers at no extra cost.
