PoK Karakoram highway protests: Thousands block Pakistan-China road for 3 days to protest against Shehbaz Sharif govt's policies

Time of India5 days ago

Thousands of residents in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan have blocked the Karakoram Highway for the third straight day, protesting against the Shehbaz Sharif-led federal government's trade policies. The highway, which connects Pakistan to China through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has seen a complete halt in vehicular movement since Friday. Protesters demand customs clearance of stalled Chinese consignments, accusing Islamabad of economic neglect.
PoK Karakoram highway protests over stalled imports
The protest began after customs authorities suspended clearance of Chinese-imported goods at Sost Dry Port nearly six months ago. Protesters claim that at least 257 consignments remain stuck at the port since December, resulting in expired goods, daily port charges, and financial losses.
Protesters are demanding a one-time amnesty scheme to clear the stranded goods. 'The policies of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Customs Department have economically murdered us,' protesters said. 'We cannot bear the losses anymore.'

Traders' groups lead the blockade
The protest is led by the Pak-China Traders Action Committee, which includes the Gilgit-Baltistan Importers and Exporters Association, Nagar Chamber of Commerce, and various small trade bodies from Nagar, Hunza, and Gilgit.
Since the protest began, long lines of vehicles have formed on both sides of the highway, leaving thousands of passengers and tourists stranded. The sit-in is taking place in Gulmat Nagar and has drawn support from traders, students, scholars, and civil society members.

Recurring protests in Gilgit-Baltistan
This is not the first time people in the region have taken to the streets. Last month, residents protested a proposed bill that would allow land and mineral grabs, along with prolonged power cuts. In October 2023, Skardu residents demanded the opening of the road to Kargil in India, citing rising prices and shortages of basic goods.
Demonstrators have also protested what they describe as the illegal occupation of their lands, shouting slogans such as 'Kabze par kabza namanzoor' (we reject repeated occupations).
Political voices join the protest
Local leaders of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) met protesters and expressed support for their demands. However, efforts to persuade the demonstrators to end the blockade were unsuccessful.
Javed Hussain, a local leader of Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif
's own Pakistan Muslim League (N), openly criticised the federal government's handling of the issue. 'GB people have been paying all taxes, yet the FBR is reluctant to clear their consignments. The government of Pakistan even gave amnesty to high-profile terrorists. So, giving a one-time amnesty to clear 250 consignments after paying taxes was not a big demand,' Hussain told Dawn.
Gilgit-Baltistan government passes responsibility
Muhammad Ali Quaid, special assistant to the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, said the local administration lacked the authority to resolve the issue. He added that the matter must be handled by the federal government in Islamabad.
The repeated protests across the region reflect growing frustration with the central government's economic and political approach toward POK. The continued unrest also exposes the widening gap between local needs and federal policies.

1 2 3 Jamshedpur: Officials in South Eastern Railways and the Chakradharpur railway division are trying to fast-track the process of selecting an agency to carry out the redevelopment of Tatanagar railway station. "Technical evaluation of the documents is presently being done, and subsequently, financial evaluation will be done ahead of the finalisation of the agency," Aditya Chaudhary, public relations officer of Chakradharpur railway division, said. Ten agencies participated in the tendering process and submitted their documents, Chaudhary said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in February last year and the railways has sanctioned Rs 348 crore for the project. Notably, the 110-year-old Tatanagar station handles 100-plus trains daily, and it is the only A1 category station in the division. Senior officials at the division said the rebuilding work will begin in five months. The redevelopment plan involves adding new platforms, constructing a new model building, and removing encroachments from a wide area in the vicinity of the platform. "Besides that, the laying of the third and fourth lines between Tatanagar and Gamharia stations is also part of the redevelopment plan," Arun Huria, divisional railway manager of Chakradharpur, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo The railway plans to add three more platforms to the existing five at Tatanagar and ensure all eight platforms are equipped with escalator and lift facilities to aid Divyang commuters in reaching the foot over bridge (FOB) for entering and exiting the station. Irate HC intimates contempt against 2 chief secys

Chennai: Expressing deep anguish and displeasure towards the attitude of Tamil Nadu chief secretary in disrespecting court orders, Madras high court initiated suo motu contempt of court proceedings against the officers who served as the chief secretary to the govt from Sep 19, 2023. "This court is expressing its deep anguish and displeasure towards the attitude of the chief secretary in disrespecting the court orders and executing them in true letter and spirit," Justice Battu Devanand said. "As the chief secretary, who is the head of the executive of the state, does not implement the court order and takes it lightly, this court cannot expect that his subordinate officers would implement the orders in true letter and spirit," the court added. The court passed the order on four petitions in which the court directed the govt to implement the scheme of compassionate appointment from 1972 to 2023. The high court passed the order while allowing the pleas moved by legal heirs of deceased govt employees against infirmities in implementing Tamil Nadu Civil Service (Appointment on Compassionate Grounds) Rules, 2023. The court directed the state to consider the suggestion for feasibility to maintain a state-wise list of the dependants for compassionate appointment and to take steps to obtain a report from the committee within two months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fastest Selling Plots of Mysore from 40L | 40+ Amenities PurpleBrick Learn More Undo The court also directed the chief secretary that the action taken report be placed before this court within three months . On June 6, the court was informed that no such report was filed within the time prescribed by the court. Recording the submission, the court said, "After considering all these facts, this court is of the prima facie opinion that the chief secretary failed to comply with the order of this court in true letter and spirit." On several occasions, this court noticed that only after the filing of contempt cases and after issuing statutory notice for the appearance of the officers, the authorities choose to file appeals with delay condonation petitions. No doubt, it is the right of the respondents to file appeals. But it has to be filed within the time stipulated for the limitation of filing of appeals, the court said. The court then adjourned the hearing to June 20.
