Social media hails Cristiano Ronaldo after UEFA Nation's League win: ‘Longevity is insane'

Popular footballer Cristiano Ronaldo once again became the center of global admiration on Sunday night, as social media erupted in praise following Portugal's victory over Spain in the UEFA Nations League final. Fans and football followers flooded platforms with messages hailing the 40-year-old's longevity, leadership, and unmatched passion for the game, as Portugal secured the title after a dramatic 5-3 win in the penalty shootout. The match, held at the Allianz Arena in Munich, saw Cristiano score the all-important equaliser in the 61st minute, extending his international tally to a record-breaking 138 goals. That strike not only kept Portugal in the game but also further cemented his position as the highest goal-scorer in international football history—well ahead of his counterpart Lionel Messi. Social media users lauded Cristiano's determination, especially after he revealed post-match that he had been carrying an injury. Despite discomfort, he chose to play, saying that he would have 'broken his leg' for the national team if needed. "I had already felt it during the warmup, I had been feeling it for some time, but for the national team, if I had to break my leg, I would have broken it. It's for a trophy, I had to play and I gave it my all," he said after the match. The sentiment struck a deep chord with fans, many of whom shared clips of the moment he broke down in tears after the final penalty secured Portugal the win. The emotional scenes of Ronaldo on his knees, crying with joy after being substituted in the 88th minute, dominated online conversations. Viewers were quick to point out how the Portuguese team dedicated the win to their long-time captain, acknowledging his decades of service and unwavering commitment to the national side. While much of the pre-match focus had been on the clash between experience and youth —CR7 vs. Spain's Lamine Yamal— it was the veteran who stood tall when it mattered most. Social media posts widely noted that Yamal struggled to leave a mark on the final, while Ronaldo's goal and leadership proved decisive. As Portugal lifted their second UEFA Nations League trophy, fans across the world came together online to celebrate not just a win, but yet another iconic chapter in Cristiano Ronaldo's legendary career.

Watch: Cristiano Ronaldo Inconsolable On Winning Nations League, Fans Recall Virat Kohli

Just days after the Indian cricketing spectrum witnessed Royal Challengers Bengaluru clinch their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, another sporting spectacle unfolded in the football world, as Portugal beat Spain in the final of the Nations League. The thrilling contest required a penalty shootout to determine the name of the winner. Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who had to be subbed before full-time due to a cramp, could barely stand to watch as the final penalty kick was taken in the final. As soon as Portugal converted the penalty to clinch the Nations League title for the second time, an extremely emotional Ronaldo went down on his knees, tucking his head under his arms, possibly crying inconsolably as his team lifted the title. I'm crying man no one gaf abt Ronaldo — sazzy (@sazzyLM8) June 8, 2025 At the age of 40, when most footballers take up the roles of pundits or start their journey to become coaches, Ronaldo continues to inspire his team. The former Real Madrid man even scored the equaliser for his team in the second half, before the game had to be taken to extra time and a penalty shootout. On June 03, Virat Kohli was at the center of a similar spectacle as Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat the Punjab Kings by 6 runs to win the IPL title for the first time ever. Virat had tears in his eyes during the final moments of the game. As soon as RCB sealed the victory, he went down on his knees, in a similar fashion to Ronaldo. - Kohli after winning IPL Trophy. - Ronaldo after winning UEFA Trophy. "A captain with the type of experience he has is essential to show the necessary values and personality," said Portugal coach Roberto Martinez. "Spain was ahead on the scoreboard twice, but the captain has a lot of experience, and we used his experience to show we are ready to win." "He deserves everything. He helps us a lot on the pitch and off it," said teammate Nuno Mendes. "He's got a winner mentality. He's a role model. We're happy we've got him."

Cristiano Ronaldo's blunt response ends all speculation regarding his future with Saudi club Al-Nassr

Portugal talisman Cristiano Ronaldo put an end to all speculation, confirming he is going nowhere from Saudi club Al-Nassr. The forward's contract was set to expire on June 30 and there were rumours of the Portugal star moving away from the club. However, after the Nations League win, Ronaldo confirmed he is going nowhere. Portugal defeated Spain 5-3 on penalties to win their second Nations League title at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Ronaldo registered the equalising goal before being substituted in the 88th minute of the match. Speaking after the UEFA Nations League Final, Ronaldo revealed that he was being courted by several clubs participating in the FIFA Club World Cup but he intends to stay at Al Nassr. 'Future? Nothing will change. Al Nassr? Yes,' said Ronaldo while speaking to reporters. In May 2025, Al Nassr's sporting director, Fernando Hierro, stated that the club was negotiating with Ronaldo regarding the latter's contract extension. He was also candid enough to admit that the club was facing competition to retain the services of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner. Last month, the Portugal forward gave a hint, saying he could leave the club after Al Nassr's season-ending match at Al Fateh. He had then taken to social media to post, "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written." Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in December 2022 after parting ways with Manchester United. For the second season in a row, the 40-year-old finished as the top-scorer in the Saudi Pro League. He registered 25 league goals this season. However, this effort was not enough for the club to go all the way, as Al Nassr finished in a disappointing third spot. Hence, the club also missed out on a spot in next season's AFC Champions League. Ronaldo might have scored 99 goals in 105 matches for the Saudi club but he has missed out on major trophies, winning just the Arab Club Champions Cup in 2023 since his arrival. Speaking about the Nations League Final, Ronaldo scored his 138th international goal as he extended his lead as the highest goal-scorer in international football, ahead of Argentina's Lionel Messi and India's Sunil Chhetri. 'Winning for Portugal is always special. I have many titles with clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. It's tears. It's duty done and a lot of joy,' said Ronaldo.
