INDIANAPOLIS – It was just about 12 noon and Kyle Larson was ready to go as the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion returned to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Indianapolis 500 full field practice session on Monday.
He flew back from Sunday night's NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina and was ready to continue his quest for a second-straight Indianapolis 500.
As Larson was walking down pit lane, he was reminded that he had a nice, leisurely Sunday without the pressure of rushing from Indianapolis to North Wilkesboro in a limited amount of time.
That would have happened if Larson had made the Fast 12 Qualifying and advance into the Fast 6 run for the pole, that didn't conclude until 6:55 p.m. Eastern Time.
Larson said he would have rather been rushed.
'I like hectic,' Larson told me as he walked down pit lane. 'I race all the time, so I'm used to hectic.
'Yesterday was very, very relaxed.'

Larson had to start last in the All-Star Race because his Indy 500 effort kept him out of the qualifying races but was assured of a starting position in the All-Star Race.
Larson raced his way to third place after a two-tire stop on Lap 178. While running third, he hit the wall on Lap 214 and finished 21st, three laps down.
'It was a really fun race,' Larson said. 'I really enjoyed it. That's by far the best short track we have in NASCAR. It's really racy. We have grip, can run multiple lines. Yeah, it was fun.
'We were running third after taking two tires. Was just starting to rip the top really fast and got loose in and smashed the wall, ended our race.'
Monday meant back to work for his second Indy 500 with Arrow McLaren. Larson qualified 21st fastest on Saturday and did not advance into the Fast 12, so his weekend ended early.
But he has already moved up two positions because IndyCar penalized Team Penske's Josef Newgarden and Will Power for unapproved modifications to the rear attenuator of their race cars, sending them to the back of the 33-car starting lineup.
Those two drivers were qualified to start alongside teammate Scott McLaughlin in Row 4. By penalizing Newgarden and Power, everyone who qualified behind them moves up two positions.
'I really don't have, like, an opinion on it,' Larson said of the penalties. 'I don't. Even in the NASCAR side of it, Chris Buescher got hit with his penalty, but I don't even know what it was and don't really care.
'It doesn't affect me in our team, so I don't really get too involved when it's other teams.'

When asked if he thought the Team Penske cars would remain a threat in the race, Larson laughed.
'Did you guys see Josef out there today? He'll be just fine,' Larson said, referring to Newgarden's speed of 225.597 mph in the No. 2 Shell Chevrolet. That was the eighth-fastest speed in the two-hour practice session.
IndyCar Series points leader Alex Palou was the fastest at 226.764 mph in the No. 10 DHL Honda. Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was second at 226.441 mph in the No. 06 Honda for Meyer Shank Racing followed by Takuma Sato, Jack Harvey and Ryan Hunter-Reay.
Larson was 11th, with a best lap of 225.056 mph.
All 33 cars were on the track and ran a total of 2,067 laps in the two-hour session.
'I thought it was decent,' Larson said of his car. 'I feel like when you're out there, everybody kind of looks pretty similar. Yeah, just try to get a little racy at times to learn a little bit for the race.
'But it's so different in practice. I feel like there's more accordion and all that that opens up passing, where the race is a little bit more difficult to pass so…
'Balance definitely feels a little different than last year. There's more of a balance shift throughout the run that I remember having.'
Instead of starting near the front as he did last year, Larson is starting mid-pack and will have to contend with traffic at the start of the race. It will be a difficult time to advance toward the front, but the NASCAR Cup Series points leader for Hendrick Motorsports loves a good challenge.
'It's fun,' he said. 'It seems more challenging. It definitely presents challenges. I had that horrendous restart last year. I think I fell back to close to where I'm starting. We were able to get closer to the front by the three-quarter point of the race.
'I think if you do just normal kind of race stuff, execute good restarts and pit stops and things, you can work your way forward without having to work too hard.
'Hopefully myself and our team can do a good job on Sunday and just chip away at it.'
After Monday's full-field practice, Larson flew to New York City for an Indy 500 Media Tour on Tuesday. After that concludes, he flies back to Indianapolis and will attend Tuesday night's Indiana Fever WNBA game against the Atlanta Dream at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Next-Gen Shelby GT500 Looks Menacing in New Spy Shots

Since the debut of the S650 Mustang in 2023, we've been waiting for a hardcore Shelby model. Rumors of the high-performance muscle car have been circulating for years, but nothing's been made official. That'll likely change soon, judging by these spy photos of a seemingly complete Shelby GT500 mule captured driving around Michigan. Our spy photographer managed to snag some detailed photos of this camouflaged GT500 prototype stalking around on the street ahead of a reveal likely to take place later this year. The front fascia wears a thick layer of netting and tarp to conceal changes to the front end, though we can see wider openings for the upper and lower grilles, as well as some outer bulges on the hood. The thin quad-exhaust pipes are clearly not production ready, while the wing looks to be lifted straight from the lesser Mustang GT . The wheels and tires are the most fascinating part of this tester. Look closely, and you'll see the tires measure 305/30ZR20 up front and 315/30ZR20 in the rear—coincidentally, these are the same exact sizes found on the last-generation GT500. The tires themselves are Pirelli P Zero Rs with "Prototype Use Only" text on the sidewalls. Unlike the last GT500 prototype we saw, this one isn't using carbon fiber wheels, but more traditional alloys. In all likelihood, this wheel and tire setup will likely be the base offering for the upcoming GT500, with a carbon fiber wheel and stickier tire offered as the sportier option. Photo by: KGP Photography There's no official word on what sort of engine will power the next GT500, but we have a pretty good idea of what to expect, thanks to a leaked union memo from the Dearborn engine plant in Michigan. The document, whose contents were confirmed by the Detroit Free Press through internal sources, showed plans to produce an engine nicknamed "Legend." The plant currently builds the supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 found in the Raptor R. That same motor powered the last GT500 , making 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. So it makes sense for the factory to supply the next car's engine, too. Power is still a question mark, though we wouldn't be surprised to see the next GT500 make over 800 hp, possibly matching the track-ready Mustang GTD . Judging by how ready-for-production this prototype looks, we probably won't have to wait much longer to find out. FanDuel bans bettor over heckling incident with Olympic champion sprinter Gabby Thomas

A sports bettor who heckled Olympic champion sprinter Gabby Thomas during a Grand Slam Track event in Philadelphia over the weekend has been banned by the betting site FanDuel Sportsbook. In a statement sent to The Associated Press on Wednesday, FanDuel wrote it 'condemns in the strongest terms abusive behavior directed towards athletes. Threatening or harassing athletes is unacceptable and has no place in sports. This customer is no longer able to wager with FanDuel.' Last weekend, Thomas finished fourth in a 100-meter race won by Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. The bettor wrote in a post on social media that he 'made Gabby lose by heckling her. And it made my parlay win.' He posted a picture of his parlay that had Jefferson-Wooden winning the 100. Thomas, the 200-meter champion at the Paris Games last summer, explained the heckling incident on X. She wrote: 'This grown man followed me around the track as I took pictures and signed autographs for fans (mostly children) shouting personal insults — anybody who enables him online is gross.' Grand Slam Track, a track league launched by Hall of Fame sprinter Michael Johnson this spring, wrote in a statement it was 'conducting a full investigation into the reprehensible behavior captured on video. 'We are working to identify the individual involved and will take appropriate action as necessary. We will implement additional safeguards to help prevent incidents like this in the future. Let us be clear, despicable behavior like this will not be tolerated.' ESPN first reported the bettor had been banned by FanDuel. The Grand Slam Track season wraps up with the fourth and final meet in Los Angeles on June 28-29. The Thomas incident is the latest in a string of stalking and abuse of female athletes. Frida Karlsson , a Swedish cross-country skiing world champion, recently brought her experience with stalking into public view when she went through a trial. A man in his 60s was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay 40,000 kronor ($4,100) in damages after being convicted of stalking Karlsson for a year and four months, according to Swedish news agency TT. The man, according to the indictment, called Karlsson 207 times, left her voicemails and text messages and approached her, including outside her apartment. In February, police in the United Arab Emirates detained a man who caused British tennis player Emma Raducanu distress by exhibiting ' fixated behavior ' toward he at a tennis tournament. Preview capsule for the NBA Finals matchup between Indiana and Oklahoma City

No. 4 Indiana Pacers (50-32, 12-4) vs. No. 1 Oklahoma City Thunder (68-14, 12-4) Season series: Thunder, 2-0. Schedule: Game 1 at Oklahoma City on Thursday, Game 2 at Oklahoma City on Sunday, Game 3 at Indiana on June 11, Game 4 at Indiana on June 13, Game 5 at Oklahoma City on June 16 (if necessary), Game 6 at Indiana on June 19 (if necessary), Game 7 at Oklahoma City on June 22 (if necessary). How they got here: Oklahoma City overwhelmed Memphis in a first-round sweep, survived seven games against 2023 NBA champion Denver, then eliminated Minnesota in five games in the Western Conference finals. The Thunder finished off the series in a romp, leading by 39 points in a 124-94 victory, and are winning by about 11 points per game in the postseason. The Pacers aren't as dominant but find a way at the finish, taking out Milwaukee and top-seeded Cleveland in five games before knocking off New York in six in the East finals. Their four victories after trailing by 17 or more points are the most by a team in a single postseason. Storyline: The small markets get the big stage. For Oklahoma City, it's a second trip to the NBA Finals since moving from Seattle in 2008. The Thunder lost in their first try against Miami in 2012 but are heavy favorites in this one after compiling the NBA's best record behind MVP and scoring champion Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Pacers are making just their second NBA Finals appearance, having lost to the Lakers in 2000. Key matchup: Tyrese Haliburton vs. Lu Dort, Alex Caruso, Cason Wallace and Gilgeous-Alexander. Nobody can throw as many good defensive guards at a team as the Thunder, as Anthony Edwards found out when Oklahoma City limited him to 12-for-31 shooting in the final two games of the West finals. Haliburton is having a memorable postseason, hitting three game-winning or game-tying shots and topping all players with 9.8 assists. But the Thunder limited him well in the two regular-season matchups, holding the All-NBA point guard to 11 points and 5.5 assists per game. X-factor: Indiana's defense. The Pacers are potent, with their 117.4 points per game in the postseason the second-highest ever by a team entering the NBA Finals. But even they can't count on offense alone against a top defensive squad like Oklahoma City. The Pacers are going to have to slow down the Thunder and showed no signs of being able to in the regular season, as Oklahoma City reached 30 points in six of the eight quarters they played and averaged 126 per game. Prediction: The Thunder are top-to-bottom the best team in the NBA. The Pacers' road success and high-scoring offense allow them to compete in this series but not win it.
