A man who built a two-storey house on his driveway after only being given planning pemission for a garage has had to pull it down following a bizarre six year row.
Madam Pal Singh was granted planning permission for a single-storey garage at his semi detached home on Vaughton Street in Highgate, Birmingham, back in 2019. But council bosses were left baffled after a small two-storey house had been constructed on the driveway instead in October 2022, reports the Mirror.
Mr Singh claimed there were only 'minor differences' from what had originally been agreed, but was ordered to bulldoze the illegal structure.

The family even argued that the 8.7m by 4.7m property was being used as a gym. However, in images taken on Monday it appeared Mr Singh had converted the building into the previously approved 5.3m by 4.6m garage.
Neighbours have spoken of their relief that the "bizarre saga" was finally over following years of building work along their street. One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "We're glad it's finally all over now, it has been going on for years.
"I dread to think what it has cost the poor bloke. To build a house, knock it down and then build a garage instead, must have cost tens of thousands of pounds at least. But he's only got himself to blame, I don't know how he thought he was ever going to get away with it.
"The building work has been a bit of a pain but I'm just happy we don't have to look at that eyesore anymore. It's been a very bizarre, long-running saga."
However, another local was more sympathetic and added: "I feel a bit sorry for him to be honest. Yes it wasn't what was entirely agreed, but it looked smart. And some of the houses around here are much more run down.
"You would have thought they could have come to a bit of compromise with him to save a lot of time and money." Planners had originally given approval for a garage to be built at the location, which the new building exceeded by several metres.
Planning Inspector Thomas Shields wrote in his report: "The appellant's case is that the building already benefits from planning permission granted by the council in 2019.
"He argues that although there are differences between the approved plans for the garage and the appeal building they are minor differences. The approved plans for the garage show a single storey detached garage with a footprint of 5.3m x 4.6m and a height of 3.6m.
"It was also shown having a standard garage door to the front and no windows on any elevation. In comparison with the approved garage the appeal building has a footprint of approximately 8.7m x 4.7m and a height of 5.3m Consequently, it is substantially larger than the approved building. It is not a minor difference."

I think he did everything for her." The neighbour said he saw John help Lynn to the car on Friday afternoon. They also had their two dachshunds with them, the friend added. They said: "His wife looked really, really frail. She was hunched over quite badly and was finding it very difficult to walk. I was surprised to see her out of the house." Police launched an investigation into the pair's deaths are believed to be searching the couple's rented terrace home in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Pictures have shown officers there and at the fatal crash scene - at the well-known coastal spot on the west of the island. Mercy crews, including Coastguard, police, firefighters and paramedics were all deployed to the horror scene on Friday, and within minutes, reportedly fought to save a man who was pulled from the wreckage and onto the shore. More info An associate of Mark Richardson is understood to have been targeted for a third time by henchmen working for Dubai-based gangster Ross McGill. A Transit van linked to Richardson's associate, Paddy Beatson, was torched in the early hours of Monday morning. The incident happened outside his home on Niddrie Marischal Crescent, reports the Daily Record. Only days before, Beatson taunted his rivals - known as Tamo Junto (TMJ). In a post online, he urged them to 'come and get him'. He wrote: "I'm home, if anyone's looking for me. I've never once ran. I've never even left my bit, other than to take my boy on a holiday. "If anyone wants it with me today, get on me. I won't be roped into a slagging match or arguments with fake accounts. I don't do that." (Image: Daily Record) The Ford van at Beatson's home was torched at around 4am on Monday. Half a mile away - and at the same time -a Range Rover believed to be owned by another associate of Richardson's was firebombed at a property on the capital's Campion Road. Cops are treating both incidents as suspicious. Images taken in the aftermath show the burnt out shells of both vehicles. Tamo Junto were quick to claim responsibility for the attacks in a video. Footage shared by the gang shows flames bursting out of the Range Rover and the Transit van. In one clip a hooded figure can be seen standing with an accelerant canister before he backs away from the fireball. The property on Campion Road, where the Range Rover was torched, was also on attacked before on May 10 - the same day Ross McGill "rejected a truce offer" with his enemies. Pictures taken at the time showed windows boarded up in the wake of the attack after men were filmed kicking in the door. McGill has been waging war on Richardson and his cronies in a series of violent attacks since March. We previously told how the pair are locked in a bitter feud after McGill was ripped off in a £500k cocaine deal. Homes, cars and businesses belonging to associates of Richardson have been hit in a series of firebombings and shootings. Machete thugs also pounced on his close ally David McMillan Snr at his home on Pitcairn Grove in the city last month. Police said they are treating the attack on the 56-year-old as attempted murder. It was the third time McMillan had been targeted in recent weeks. On April 17, two masked thugs set fire to his front door while children slept inside. Just three weeks later on May 8, a white Land Rover SUV in his driveway went up in flames after his family returned home from a shopping trip. McGill's enforcers have also gone after the notorious Daniel crime clan during the feud due to their association with Richardson, with properties linked to the clan torched as violence spread to Glasgow. In April, a carpet and flooring unit owned by Daniel enforcer Craig "Rob Roy" Gallagher was torched in Bishopbriggs. And in Milton, a female pensioner and 12-year-old boy were injured after hoods stormed their home looking for a high-ranking member of the Daniel family. McGill's men went on to target the home of Steven 'Bonzo' Daniel, as well as the properties of his mum Annette, uncle Norman and sister Kelly 'Bo' Green. Last month, two men were attacked with a machete at a garage owned by Robert Daniel in East Kilbride. Last Saturday night, key Lyons clan lieutenants Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan were assassinated outside Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola. Or we will relentlessly come after you." Police Scotland has arrested 42 people in connection with a series of linked incidents relating to the war across the country in an investigation called Operation Portaledge.

Welshpool drink driver caught with partner in BMW car
A driver who was found to be twice over the drink-drive limit with his partner in the car has been banned from driving. Police were called at 11.20pm on May 16 after receiving a report from a member of the public in Welshpool who believed that the driver of a BMW X1 was under the influence of alcohol. Officers stopped the vehicle driven by Sukhminder Singh in Church Street and he failed a roadside breathalyser test. The 31-year-old was arrested and found to be twice over the drink-drive limit almost two hours later following a further breathalyser test at the police station. Defence solicitor Owain Jones told Welshpool Magistrates' Court that Singh couldn't recall how much he had drunk that evening, but it was "clearly more" than the two beers he had told police. Mr Jones said: "I explained the risk to himself, other road users and his family. His response was of guilt, and he feels ashamed and deeply regrets his actions. "He has no previous convictions and has never been in trouble before. This has been a lesson to him." Welshpool Magistrates' Court was told that Singh and his partner sought asylum in the UK due to religious persecution in India. "He has no benefits, but he lives off the generosity of friends, family and Sikh community," Mr Jones explained. Singh, of Mason Street, West Bromwich, was given a 20-month driving disqualification and ordered to pay the court £253 within three months after pleading guilty to drink driving. Nicholas Powell, chair of the magistrates' bench, said: "We are very disappointed seeing you here under these circumstances. "Drink driving is very foolish which could have resulted in injuries to people, yourself and your family. It seems that you gave no great thought about them."
