How Venus-Like Exo-Planets Can Help Map Nearby Habitable Zones

The old adage that it's easier to prove a negative could play a crucial role in characterizing nearby exoplanets that could harbor life. The idea is that looking for earth-like planets is tough enough without wasting time on false positives.
Yet the authors of a recent paper appearing in the journal Science Advances propose using the detection of sulfur dioxide in the atmospheres of extrasolar Venus-like planetary hellholes to serve as a negative chemical marker for water and life as we know it.
It's really difficult to look at the exoplanet population and identify habitable planets that have liquid surface water, Sean Jordan, the paper's lead author and a planetary scientist at ETH Zurich, tells me at the recent European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2025 in Vienna.
But if you can identify sulfur dioxide in their atmospheres, that is a negative sign for water, says Jordan. That's a telltale sign that that, at least for now these planets don't have liquid water and are not going to be a great place to look for life, he says.
We show that the inner edge of the habitable zone can now be mapped among exoplanets using their lack of surface water, which, unlike the presence of water, can be unambiguously revealed by atmospheric sulfur, the authors write. For instance, sulfur dioxide is abundant in our own Venus's atmosphere compared to Earth but the authors note is expected to be scrubbed from habitable planetary atmospheres by precipitation.
These types of searches would also enable planetary astrophysicists to finally define the inner edge of habitable zones around dozens of nearby M-dwarf spectral type stars. Such stars range in size from about a tenth to a half the mass of our own G-type star. And, perhaps most importantly for astrobiology, have exceedingly long lifetimes on the so-called main sequence, as hydrogen burning stars.
Not only are red dwarf stars the most common stars and planetary systems in the galaxy, but they are geometrically favorable because they're smaller, so we get higher planet to star size ratios, says Jordan. This gives us a bigger signal when these planets transit in front of their parent stars, he says.
Until now, a key challenge has been defining a given solar system's so-called habitable zone, the most simplistic definition of which is where a given terrestrial planet can harbor liquid water on its surface.
Whether planets orbiting these M dwarf stars can even hold on to atmospheres at all remains an open question, says Jordan. That's because they're being blasted with so much extreme ultraviolet and X ray radiation, he says.
In truth, given its size and mass, our planet Venus is virtually an astrophysical twin to our own Earth. But that's where most of the comparisons end, since Venus' surface is hot enough to melt lead and its atmospheric pressures are more than 90 times that of our own. Yet as is oft repeated, if we can't understand the planet next door, what hope do we have of understanding the thousands of new extrasolar planetary systems that have been discovered by astronomers in the last three decades?
Estimates of the inner edge of the habitable zone depend heavily on modeling assumptions and whether or not a planet has evolved from a 'hot start' or a 'cold start,' the authors note. Models of slowly rotating planets initialized with surface water oceans (a cold start) can maintain habitable conditions well inside the traditional Venus zone of a star via a cloud-climate feedback, they write.
With NASA's Webb Space Telescope, the critical next step in testing the origin and prevalence of life on nearby exoplanets lies in mapping the inner edges of habitable zones around M-dwarf host stars, the authors note. Positively identifying a Venus-like atmosphere, with a surface too hot to support liquid water, is imperative in constraining habitability among the rocky exoplanet population, they write.
We can't say yet with any certainty whether Venus was born dead, and water only ever existed as steam in a really hot atmosphere that was eventually lost, or whether it was habitable, says Jordan. But the question of whether our Venus could have ever been habitable in the past will have sweeping implications for the possible habitability of Venus-like exoplanets, he says.
As for Earth?
We're very fortunate to have a planet where all of these stabilizing climate feedbacks are occurring, but we don't know how prevalent that is in the universe, says Jordan.

ST. PAUL, Minn., June 11 (UPI) -- A suspected link between childhood trauma and the risk of developing endometriosis in later life was strengthened Wednesday with the publication of study that showed a greater chance of the condition among women with histories of difficult childhoods. The study of hundreds of thousands of women in Sweden found those who as children experienced substance abuse, had a teenage or mentally ill parent, financial problems or a death in the family were linked to a 20% increased risk of an endometriosis diagnosis compared to women who had not been exposed. However, the risk was much greater for girls exposed more than one of those factors, rising to 60%, while those who witnessed or were subjected to violence saw more than twice the risk of developing endometriosis later in life compared to women who had not been exposed, the Swedish authors reported. The study published in the British medical journal Human Reproduction builds on earlier findings that women who experienced physical and sexual abuse as children had a 79% higher risk of developing the painful condition, which affects one in 10 reproductive-age women in the United States. Lead author Dr. Marika Rostvall, a physician and doctoral student in the Department of Global Public Health at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, told UPI the findings provide more evidence of the strong connection between mental and physical health. The findings "support previous studies in other areas of medicine suggesting that the mind and body are intimately connected and that psychologically taxing events can have biological consequences," she said in emailed comments. Endometriosis usually affects women in their 20s and 30s, and while there are a handful known risk factors such as starting menstruation early and having a lean body type, the cause remains unknown. The problems stem from the behavior of tissues known as endometrium, which under normal circumstances are found only in the inner lining of a woman's uterus. Those tissues grow to a thick, blood vessel-rich layer during the menstrual cycle to prepare for possible implantation of an embryo, and then shed the blood at the end of the cycle if there is no embryo present. But in some cases, endometrium behave abnormally and start growing outside of the uterus. When they do so, they can attach themselves to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder or other parts of the body, triggering frequently severe pelvic pain as they carry out their monthly thickening function. As a result, endometriosis can cause excessive bleeding and even infertility -- which is the case for up to half of women with the condition -- as well as cysts, scar tissue and adhesions. Those in turn can trigger chronic pain, including during with sexual intercourse as well as during urination or bowel movements. The Swedish researchers began by looking at the health records of more 1.3 million women born in in the country between 1974 and 2001, eventually narrowing it down to 24,000 who were diagnosed with endometriosis. They then tapped several national registers to track their childhood experiences, looking for evidence of trauma or difficulties, including crimes such as violence and sexual abuse. The results, they said, demonstrate the importance of considering "the whole person" not just the symptoms of endometriosis. The negative physical consequences of psychological trauma can perhaps be traced to a compromised ability of the immune system to protect against the condition, or even in how the body perceives pain, Rostvall said. "I think the immune system is an interesting part of the puzzle when it comes to trying to understand why some women develop endometriosis," she said. "Chronic inflammation is a big part of the disease, and it has also been shown that women with endometriosis have a higher incidence of autoimmune disorders compared to healthy women. "There is a lot of interesting research being done in the area, and a deeper understanding of exactly how the immune system functions in relation to endometriosis could potentially help bring forward new kinds of treatment." Like some other women's health issues, the pain of endometriosis is often dismissed and sufferers have reported negative experiences with healthcare professionals, often in the form of providers "trivializing" symptoms, which can cause feelings of loneliness and alienation. This, in turn, can make obtaining a diagnosis difficult and prompt some to choose to avoid engaging with doctors altogether. A British psychological-based study from last year showed some women who suffered symptoms felt they had experienced a form of "medical gaslighting" in which they were made to doubt their own perceptions of pain. Rostvall said these kinds of experiences are especially relevant when the patients are women who come from socially and psychologically traumatic backgrounds. "A lot of women presenting with pain, especially socioeconomically disadvantaged women and women with psychiatric comorbidities, who are more likely to have experienced childhood adversity, have their pain dismissed. They then have to wait for a long time to receive a diagnosis and treatment, potentially allowing the condition to worsen," she said. "I think physicians should be aware of the complex linkage between the mind and body in general and be more open to listening to their patients' stories, take their pain seriously, and offer a thorough physical examination."

Saab and Helsing pit AI-piloted warplane against real fighter pilot

By Tim Hepher PARIS (Reuters) -Sweden's Saab and German defence startup Helsing have conducted combat testing of a Gripen E warplane flown by AI against a real fighter pilot, they said on Wednesday, in a step forward in European efforts to compete on autonomy in defence. Last week's trial is the first publicly known instance of artificial intelligence being tested in a warplane beyond visual range (BVR) rather than in a close-range dogfight, or that AI has controlled a fully fledged jet rather than a test plane. In May last year, then-U.S. Air Force secretary Frank Kendall flew in a modified F-16 called X-62A VISTA fitted with machine learning supplied by Shield AI to demonstrate the ability of AI to enter aerial battle with a crewed F-16. The European trials, known as "Project Beyond", included three flights carried out between May 28 and June 3, the last of which pitted Helsing's "Centaur" AI agent piloting a Gripen E against a human-operated Gripen D fighter jet, the companies said. Funded by the Swedish government, the trial was inconclusive on whether the human Top Gun or the AI-powered foe performed better, but the trial highlights an increasing focus on integrating AI and autonomy into combat systems. "I would say it is not a given who will win... you have to be on your game as a pilot," Saab's Chief Innovation Officer Marcus Wandt, who is also a Swedish astronaut and ex-fighter pilot, told reporters. "If you need to retrain for a new weapon system or new tactics, it will be difficult to stay on par. Right now there are still pilots out there that will have a chance, but that will change fast." NEXT-GEN COMBAT JETS The trial comes as Saab is exploring concepts for the next generation of combat jets expected to combine crewed and uncrewed planes, under Sweden's KFS future air combat study. Sweden has not decided whether to continue to pursue its own independent fighter plane as a successor to Saab's home-grown Gripen. It was previously involved with Britain's Tempest fighter project, but pulled back to focus on its own research as the programme widened to include Japan and Italy. The other major European fighter in the works is the Franco-German-Spanish fighter programme widely known as SCAF. Kendall, who stepped down with the outgoing Biden administration after leading the U.S. next-generation fighter project that laid the groundwork for the recently launched F-47, has said AI decision-making will routinely overpower humans. However, Western projects for incorporating AI into weapons systems call for humans to be able to intervene at some point. Saab and Helsing executives said the AI initiative exemplified the need for fast development timelines and dismissed the 10- or 15-year timetables of rival projects. Details of their trial were unveiled ahead of next week's Paris Airshow, following months of simulator work in which the executives said the Centaur AI agent was fed the equivalent of 30 years' of experience every week.
