Spurs' Victor Wembanyama reveals Gregg Popovich's ‘incredible' quality

The post Spurs' Victor Wembanyama reveals Gregg Popovich's 'incredible' quality appeared first on ClutchPoints.
Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama offered a striking tribute to the remarkable character of Gregg Popovich. Speaking after Popovich transitioned to the Spurs' front office, Wembanyama reflected on the coach's 29 legendary years on the bench. He praised Popovich as a figure whose influence goes far beyond X's and O's.

'What's incredible with him is that he keeps giving hope being the person that he is. He keeps inspiring us. Because the way he works, he works harder than most athletes in the world,' Wembanyama said, honoring a mentor whose work ethic rivals his own.
With Mitch Johnson now stepping in as head coach, the Spurs enter the 2025–26 season grounded in Popovich's foundational values. Wembanyama's words reflect the emotional weight of the transition while affirming that the Spurs culture Popovich built remains intact.
Wembanyama didn't just highlight Coach Pop's legendary tactics or practice habits. He focused on the emotional investment Popovich made in his players.
'We were all really close,' he said, acknowledging how much the departure stung.

Still, in typical Pop fashion, the veteran coach pulled the team together. 'It's always sad and shocking when something like this happens,' Wemby added. But Pop's response 'kept inspiring us.'
The reflection came during a whirlwind offseason for the young All-Star. Wembanyama had just returned from the Shaolin Temple in China, where he trained in Kung Fu and even shaved his head. The experience left him mentally sharper. Despite dealing with a blood clot in his shoulder, Wembanyama still emerged last season as the defensive anchor for the Spurs. The temple trip added to his growing mental and physical toughness.
San Antonio's future now lies in Johnson's hands. The former assistant takes over with strong momentum. The Spurs made a splash by acquiring De'Aaron Fox at the deadline and still hold multiple draft assets. Pop's blueprint appears built to last, even with him no longer on the sidelines.
Wembanyama's tribute is a reminder: the Spurs' greatest strength isn't their scheme, it's their culture. And no one embodied that more than Popovich. Even off the court, Pop continued to inspire. He worked harder than most athletes, guided and cared. And most importantly, he led.

Popovich's coaching era may be over, but his legacy remains deeply rooted. Through Wembanyama's words, that legacy is already being carried forward, and it's nothing short of incredible.

New York Jets' Allen Lazard reportedly may not want Aaron Rodgers reunion with Pittsburgh Steelers

New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard has spent the majority of his NFL career catching passes during the season from Aaron Rodgers. With the future Hall of Famer now signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, many have wondered if the quarterback and receiver will reunite again. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Lazard sees 'a very real potential benefit' in demonstrating his ability to contribute without catching passes from the four-time NFL MVP. In addition, the veteran wideout fits nicely in a Jets' offense that will be more run-heavy and rely on sound blocking by its receivers. Advertisement Related: Jets insider sheds light on likely cost of Sauce Gardner contract extension Allen Lazard stats (ESPN): 37 receptions, 530 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns, 14.3 yards per reception in 12 games last season In Lazard's last full season without Rodgers under center, he struggled to make an impact. Across 14 games in 2023, he recorded just 311 receiving yards on 49 targets, even becoming a healthy scratch in multiple games. It's also worth noting that Lazard agreed to a pay cut in April that kept him in New York. Heading into minicamp, Lazard would likely be the second receiver on the depth chart behind Garrett Wilson. However, he would also be competing with wide receivers Josh Reynolds and Malachi Corley, along with rookie tight end Mason Taylor for targets in a run-heavy offense. Related: Steelers have set timeline for T.J. Watt contract extension Pittsburgh is still looking to replace George Pickens, who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys. Lazard would have the advantage of an established rapport with Rodgers, which could prove significant considering the 41-year-old quarterback's history of heavily targeting wide receivers he completely trusts regardless of the talent around him on the field. Advertisement What's unknown is whether or not the Jets would be willing to move on from Lazard, especially if it means releasing him or trading him to Pittsburgh for a swap of late-round picks. Given Lazard's blocking ability, he might be more valuable to the team than a future Day 3 pick. Read More: NFL power rankings 2025, see where Jets and Steelers land Related Headlines

Texas A&M starting QB Marcel Reed is being highly undervalued this offseason

Texas A&M's 2025 football season is critical for several reasons, starting with second-year head coach Mike Elko's future with the program, and followed by starting quarterback Marcel Reed's standing in the depth chart, knowing that he'll need to improve as a pocket passer to lead the Aggies to the program's first College Football Playoff berth. It's early, and quarterback rankings, especially in the SEC, are premature. Still, we've all assembled our own, including Aggies Wire contributor Dylan Flippo's SEC QB rankings, where he placed Marcel Reed at No. 6, providing an accurate assessment of his reasoning behind the high standing. "Amongst a stacked class of dual-threat quarterbacks in the conference this season, Reed has what it takes to be the best. His 1,864 passing yards in 11 games and 12.2 yards per carry last season were just a glimpse into the potential he has at the helm for the Aggies. Staying present and in the moment will be key for Reed with just a year of SEC experience under his belt." Advertisement Marcel Reed doesn't lack confidence, and as Flippo noted, he was close to passing for 2,000 yards in a season where quarterback Conner Weigman also started several games before transferring to Houston this offseason. Reed's legs are his strength, but his offseason workouts have shown a player with plenty of zip on his throws and velocity to boot. Still, Reed remains undervalued among SEC signal callers. While he should be ranked under Arch Manning (Texas), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), and LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina), every other projected SEC starting quarterback is up for debate. On Monday, College Football Report released its latest SEC QB rankings, unsurprisingly being ranked at No. 10 below first-year Ole Miss starters Austin Simmons (Ole Miss) and Ty Simpson (Alabama). One theory is that non-Texas A&M media members are judging Marcel Reed based on his poor play against the Texas Longhorns in last season's 17-7 loss. If that is indeed the case, it is highly unfair and one of the primary reasons his skillset is being overlooked. However, while he has shown flashes of brilliance, it's time for the Tennessee native to put together a complete season in 2025. 'Marcel (Reed) has been great' Texas A&M HC Mike Elko praises his QB's development

Texas A&M's 2025 season will wholly depend on starting quarterback Marcel Reed taking the next step in his development, and while most of the national media are highly skeptical, coach Mike Elko has vocally backed the redshirt sophomore based on his offseason development, and continued to do so on Tuesday night during the Forth Worth Coach's Night. Reed is a dual-threat quarterback in every sense of the definition, flashing brilliance as a runner, while he has shown the arm strength and accuracy needed to thrive in the SEC. However, inconsistency in the pocket was a constant issue outside of a handful of games, while his poor performance in the season finale loss to Texas resulted in the national media losing confidence in the former four-star recruit. Advertisement Still, thanks to his father, Rod Reed, we have been able to witness Marcel put the work in the offseason, working with various coaches to refine his technique as a passer, mainly working on his accuracy and quick release. In OC Collin Klein's balanced offense, Reed will need to make the tight window throws and complete enough deep passes to open up the running game, which shouldn't be an issue on paper given the influx of talent in the wide receiver room from the transfer portal. With KC Concepcion and Mario Craver joining Terry Bussey, Ashton Bethel-Roman, Izaiah Williams, and Jonah Wilson in the 2025 WR Corps, Reed can thrive in the short to intermediate passing game given every player's ability to gain yards after contact. On Tuesday night, Elko once again praised his QB based on the work he's put in, reminding the Aggies in the audience that during his first starting season as a redshirt freshman, mistakes are almost guaranteed, but he's on the right track regardless. "Marcel (Reed) has been great." "I don't think anybody really appreciates the development that Marcel made because a lot of his development happened at the end of the year when we didn't get the results that we wanted. … We have to finish those games and get the results, but if you're looking for signs of growth from the quarterback, those signs were there." "Growth" is everything when it comes to quarterback development, and while some will see this as coach-speak, Elko has kept it real when discussing player development, especially given the importance of the 2025 campaign.
