Nick Kyrgios will miss Wimbledon and the entire grasscourt season due to a minor setback in his recovery from injury, the Australian said on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old has struggled with a litany of foot, knee and wrist injuries since his runner-up finish at Wimbledon in 2022 and has played only four singles matches this year.
He recorded his first singles win since 2022 at the Miami Open in March but pulled out of the French Open with a knee issue.
"I've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass season this year," Kyrgios posted on social media.
"I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. This is just a bump in the road though, and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever."

Leishman calls out claims that LIV players can't win majors

SYDNEY - Australian Marc Leishman has rubbished the idea that players who have defected to the LIV Golf series are ill-prepared to win major championships. The former world number 12, who joined LIV in 2022 after winning six U.S. PGA titles, qualified for next week's U.S. Open at Oakmont on Monday to end his three-year absence from the majors. Leishman grinned when asked about comments made by commentator Brandel Chamblee, who said Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau fell out of contention at last month's PGA Championship because of LIV's format and lack of competition. "I would disagree with that," the 41-year-old told reporters by video call from the U.S. on Thursday. "I think the way our schedule is set up actually lends itself to being able to prepare very well for the majors. "We're playing against great fields every single week on tough golf courses. Yes, it's 54 holes, but it puts a bit of pressure on that first round to get off to a good start because they are a little bit more of a sprint. "We're still playing a lot of golf away from tournaments, enjoying golf more and I think when you are enjoying your golf and it's not so much of a grind, that lends itself to better play. "I would probably disagree with Brandel Chamblee ... a lot." Leishman, whose best finish at a major was a tie for second at the 2015 British Open, felt he could be a title contender in Pennsylvania next week. "Obviously golf's a funny game and you need a lot of stuff to go right on the right weeks, particularly the major weeks," he added. "And sometimes even if you do have your good stuff and you make the parts and you get a couple of lucky breaks, someone can still go crazy and beat you so you need a lot of stuff to go right. "But definitely I feel like that my game is probably as good as it's ever been. My mindset is as good as it's ever been and hopefully I can get the breaks and come out on top." Luciano Spalletti confident in Italy's quest for World Cup return

Italy coach Luciano Spalletti believes he has all the tools needed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. PHOTO: REUTERS OSLO – Italy manager Luciano Spalletti is framing the June 6 clash in Norway as a decisive moment in their 2026 World Cup qualification and says his side are fully equipped to deliver. The Azzurri begin their qualifying campaign in Group I in Oslo against hosts off to a flying start with six points from two matches and nine goals scored. Four-time World Cup champions Italy have failed to reach the World Cup Finals since 2014, and are only now beginning their qualifiers after competing in the Nations League quarter-finals in March, where they lost to Germany. 'Let's be clear – in Norway, everything is on the line when it comes to whether or not we'll qualify for the World Cup,' Spalletti told reporters. 'We have a duty to fulfil this task that's been entrusted to us. We need to qualify because it's absolutely crucial for us. As for us, we have everything we need to play our game. We have all the potential for a great match, and that's exactly what we intend to put into practice.' He will not have Inter Milan's Francesco Acerbi, however. The veteran defender withdrew from the squad on June 1, the day after his club's loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, citing a lack of respect from Spalletti. Acerbi has not played for Italy since November 2023, but after his recent exploits with Inter – where he scored an equaliser in their semi-final with Barcelona – Spalletti named him in his squad. The 37-year-old's announcement comes immediately following Inter's 5-0 loss in Munich, but Acerbi, who spoke with Spalletti on the morning of June 1, said the defeat had nothing to do with his decision. 'I felt that, in light of recent events, the conditions to continue this path peacefully do not exist today,' he said in a social media post. 'I don't seek alibis or favours, I demand respect. And if this respect is lacking on the part of those who should lead a group, then I prefer to step aside. I've always given everything, but I don't stay where I'm no longer really wanted and it's clear that I'm not part of the manager's project.' Norway coach Stale Solbakken, meanwhile, do not fear Italy after his team's impressive start. 'I'm not sure they're the favourites. For me, it's more of a 50–50 match on our home ground,' he said. 'The most important thing for us is that we are ourselves.' The 2026 World Cup will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 to July 19. Brazil need to get the best out of Vinicius Jr, says Carlo Ancelotti

PHOTO: REUTERS Brazil need to get the best out of Vinicius Jr, says Carlo Ancelotti SAO PAULO – Brazil must help Vinicius Jr rediscover the form he has displayed at Real Madrid, new national team coach Carlo Ancelotti said on June 4. Ancelotti, who guided the Spanish giants to several titles alongside the Brazilian forward, including two Champions League triumphs and two La Liga crowns, said that the player's unique ability to unsettle opposing defences made him a vital asset. 'I don't know if he's been at his best here, but he has time to do what he does at Real Madrid,' he said ahead of Brazil's World Cup qualifying match against Ecuador on June 5 (June 6, Singapore time) – his first match in charge of the national team. 'For us, he's a fundamental player. We have to work to ensure he performs at his best here.' Vinicius made his World Cup debut in Qatar in 2022 and has been a regular during their qualifying campaign for the 2026 tournament. However, he has struggled for form with the national team, falling short of his usual standards at Real. Regarding his tactical approach, Ancelotti stated that he aims to field a compact, balanced team. 'I don't want a team with a clear identity. We have to defend well, whether it's 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. We have to defend together and use creativity with the ball,' the Italian said. 'Individual quality is not enough today; you have to combine it with attitude, drive and commitment.' He did not reveal his starting line-up for his debut as coach, but he did have words of praise for 18-year-old Estevao, who is leaving Palmeiras for Chelsea and has been tipped for a bright future with the national team. 'He's got a special talent... he's got character, he's a good person, he's humble, and he seems fine to me, but with a young player we have to be patient and careful. He has the characteristics to be very important for the future of the national team,' Ancelotti said. Brazil are fourth in the standings for the South American World Cup qualifiers, while their opponents Ecuador are second, behind world champions Argentina. The top six qualify directly for the World Cup. They will host Paraguay in Sao Paulo next week and could secure an early spot at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, meanwhile, said he had yet to decide whether captain Lionel Messi would start in their next qualifier against Chile, as he continues to closely monitor the 37-year-old's fitness. With their place at the Finals already secured, Argentina travel to face bottom-placed Chile on June 5 without several regulars and with Messi's role uncertain. 'We've been in contact (with Messi) recently. We haven't decided yet whether he'll play from the start or not. It would be good to know how he's feeling physically,' Scaloni said. 'In principle, he's available to play, and we'll decide later.' With a number of key players sidelined by injury or suspension, Scaloni called it a chance to test new talent ahead of their World Cup title defence next summer. 'We're going to have a lot of players out. If some of the guys we call up are fit and ready to play, they'll get their chance,' he said. 'I don't have the starting eleven confirmed yet, but we will give some playing time to players who haven't played much and who we believe are ready to play. 'Although the result is always important, we don't think it's crucial today. We'll probably try to help these players settle in and give them the chance to get some playing time with the team.'
