Rachel Carson Raised the Alarm About Pesticides in Silent Spring, Changing Environmental History

In 1962, the biologist Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, which captured the public's imagination and led to a shift in the understanding of our relationship with the natural world. Her book criticized the widespread use of artificial pesticides, especially one known as 'DDT.' Notably, Carson's work also helped launch the modern environmental movement and highlighted the environmental consequences of our actions in a way that had never been done before.
At the time, pesticides like DDT were seen as offering a glimpse of a better future, one where humans could control nature. DDT in particular promised to combat insects that carried diseases or destroyed farmers' crops. In fact, the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to the Swiss chemist who first realized that DDT could be used as an insecticide. After it was successfully used to fight disease during World War II, DDT's production soared. It was used in everything from sprays to bug-killing wallpaper.
Applying her skills as a biologist, though, Carson observed that not all was right with this optimistic picture.
Carson was raised in Springdale, Pennsylvania, not far from the polluted, industrial city of Pittsburgh. Her love of nature had been instilled in her by her mother. Carson became a marine biologist and, in 1936, was hired as a scientist, writer, and editor for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. In the 1940s and 1950s, she published a series of popular books about the sea, which conveyed her love of the ocean to a general audience. Carson's ability to understand complex scientific reports and her status as a noted author placed her in an excellent position to write a book exposing the harms of DDT.
Silent Spring argued that the overuse of these artificial pesticides was poisoning not just insects, but many other animals – including people. For example, DDT can cause bird eggshells to thin to a dangerous extent, resulting in reproductive failure. Indeed, the 'silent spring' in Carson's title was a reference to a hypothetical future in which there would be few or no birds left to sing in the springtime. The plight of birds was, however, just one of many examples of environmental destruction Carson ominously highlighted in chapters like 'Needless Havoc' and 'Rivers of Death.'
Although not the first to raise concerns about DDT, Carson's book presented these issues for the public in a way nothing else had done before. She had a knack for making hard-to-understand concepts easier to grasp. Writing Silent Spring during an era of widespread anxiety about nuclear weapons, she highlighted the similarities between unseen pesticides and invisible nuclear radiation. This made the seriousness of her claims about DDT clear, helping readers to understand that just because something was hard to detect did not mean that it was not dangerous or destructive.
Her revelations about DDT must have been surprising to those who believed it represented a progressive step forward for humanity, especially when the consequences for the environment were unintentional.
Carson's willingness to speak up against the chemical industry that produced compounds such as DDT was courageous. At a time when the environmental movement was only beginning, detractors argued she cared more about birds, fish, and insects than the health of human beings. After all, human food security and protection against diseases like malaria or typhus were positive goals – who could deny that? The chemical industry, no doubt genuinely trying to provide useful substances for humanity, was threatened by her work. Upset by her book, some critics also chose to attack Carson personally rather than address her scientific concerns, attempting to portray her as a hysterical spinster and perhaps even a communist.
However, Carson showed that DDT wasn't even helping humans as intended. She claimed that due to the overuse of pesticides, insects were developing something known as 'resistance.' Resistance works like this: if a poison such as DDT wipes out weaker insects, any survivors would be likely able to survive a future spraying — and so might their offspring. What was at first an effective bug killer could shortly become useless as insects evolved to resist the pesticide. Those survivors would then go on to repopulate and, before long, the unwanted bugs would be back, only stronger.
Resistance itself is not new or unusual. Insects have been developing the ability to endure natural plant toxins for hundreds of millions of years. But man-made toxins can increase the speed and scope in which insects can evolve. The counterintuitive lesson of pesticide resistance is that to maintain some ability to control insects, only a small amount of pesticide should be used. Otherwise, any victories achieved could be short lived as harder-to-kill bugs take the place of their more susceptible cousins.
Seen from this angle, Carson was far from being at war on human welfare. She encouraged us to use less spray, not only because it would be better for the environment, but because it would likely be better for us in the long run. In Silent Spring, she gave evocative examples of places where the insect problem was worse after pesticides had been sprayed. For example, in apple orchards in Virginia and Nova Scotia, apple-eating moths became more problematic after DDT had been used.
Despite her concerns about DDT, Carson never called for its outright ban and was not inherently opposed to pesticides. Her real concern was of a coming 'Age of Resistance,' in which increasingly toxic chemicals were used less effectively against insects, resulting in environmental havoc, harder-to-kill bugs, and the need for more potent chemicals.
Carson's detractors may have thought she was overly sentimental about nature — she did write movingly about the plight of natural creatures — but she was also an excellent scientist who supported her claims with carefully compiled evidence. Like any good scientist, she provided a list of references at the end of her book, citing the work of many other biologists and researchers. If the mild-mannered Carson was 'emotional,' then so were a whole body of scientists who were reaching the same conclusions. Carson denied being an emotional crusader but maintained that she was merely collecting the facts so that the public could make up their own minds about pesticides in an informed manner.
In time, the public and many policymakers listened to Carson and her fellow scientists who raised concerns about DDT. In 1972, the newly formed Environmental Protection Agency banned the general use of DDT in the United States. Elsewhere, the compound is largely out of use, with only limited controlled spraying in places where malaria is still a problem.
The world has changed, and many more people today recognize the impact we have upon nature, including the fact that our actions often have unintended consequences. However, understanding these relationships is not easy, and many of the questions that Carson raised remain with us. The lessons that we can learn from her courage and scientific mindedness will continue to be relevant as we study not only the environment, but also our relationship with it.

Humans were letting the bed bugs bite long before beds existed, and while they do live on other species, we're the main reason this notorious parasite is still going strong. In fact, bed bugs might have been the first pest to plague our cities – earlier than the black rat, for instance, which joined us in urban life about 15,000 years ago, and even the German cockroach, which only got the memo about 2,100 years ago. Researchers think the blood-sucking pests – Cimex lectularius – first jumped from their bat hosts onto a passing human some 50,000 years ago, a move which would change the course of the insect species forever. Human bed bugs, it turns out, have boomed since the Last Glacial Maximum about 20,000 years ago. But it's a different story for those populations that continued living on bats. "Initially with both populations, we saw a general decline that is consistent with the Last Glacial Maximum; the bat-associated lineage never bounced back, and it is still decreasing in size," says entomologist Lindsay Miles, from Virginia Tech. "The really exciting part is that the human-associated lineage did recover and their effective population increased." The researchers were able to track this evolution because the human bed bugs have a much narrower genetic diversity, since only a few 'founders' probably came with us when we abandoned life in caves. But our move into cities around 12,000 years ago is what really kicked off the human bed bug boom. This was only briefly interrupted when DDT was invented in the 1940s. Populations crashed, humans slept sweetly, and then five years later, the bed bugs were back. Since then, bed bugs have travelled around the world with us, and even become resistant to our pesticides. For now, it seems, bed bugs are here to stay. It's been a long-term relationship, after all. Protect LIGO's science and local impact from Trump's budget cuts

The Trump administration wants to slash funding for America's two Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatories (LIGOs) as part of broader cuts to the National Science Foundation. That would be a devastating blow to the nation's global leadership in scientific research. When Congress writes its fiscal 2026 budget, it should ignore the president's anti-science request. One of the LIGO sites is on the Hanford nuclear site. The other is in Louisiana. The White House proposes cutting 40% of their funding – $48 million to $29 million. And it also dictates how that cut should be made. It wants one of the two sites shut down. Given that Washington is a blue state that is participating in multiple lawsuits against the Trump administration and Louisiana is a red state that voted for the president, the odds of LIGO Hanford surviving seem low. Either way, scientists' ability to explore the universe by detecting gravitational waves would suffer significantly. Shutting one site down would compromise scientists' ability to verify detections of cosmic events and weed out false readings originating from local disturbances. It also would prevent the two sites from triangulating where an event occurred in the sky, allowing telescopes that rely on light for observations to also find and research them. The two LIGOs work in tandem. In 2015, the Hanford observatory and its sibling in Louisiana detected gravitational waves for the first time when they measured the ripple in space-time caused by two black holes merging 1.4 billion light-years away. The findings provided fresh confirmation of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity and earned researchers a Nobel Prize in physics. Since then, LIGO has detected hundreds of events, including black holes merging and neutron stars colliding. The Hanford site continues to refine its tools and push science forward. An upgrade a couple of years ago installed quantum squeezing technology that allows scientists to detect 60% more events and probe a larger volume of space. If funded, the observatories will continue to help humanity answer profound questions about the universe. Projects like LIGO are expensive. The National Science Foundation has spent more than $1 billion on detecting gravitational waves over four decades. At the start, skeptics deemed it risky, but it has provided tremendous return on investment. It epitomizes the sort of Big Science research that few institutions other than governments can afford. Think Europe's Large Hadron Collider, the Manhattan Project and the international Human Genome Project. Undercutting LIGO as it reaches its full potential and produces its most impressive results just to save a few million dollars would be a colossal mistake. As one commenter on the Tri-City Herald's website put it, 'It would be like inventing the microscope, seeing a cell for the first time, and then discarding it.' The best is yet to come. Even if a future administration were to restore funding, rehiring skilled researchers would be a monumental hurdle. A temporary shutdown will delay scientific progress and result in America losing ground to international researchers. LIGO has a local impact, too, and not just that it is visible from outer space. Its presence helps the Tri-Cities and the Hanford nuclear site evolve their scientific narrative from Cold War-era nuclear development to 21st-century astrophysics. It is a symbol of progress, diversification and positive global contribution that is invaluable for regional identity and attracting future talent and investment. LIGO staff go the extra mile by working with local STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students. They speak in classrooms about science careers and explain the complex workings of the observatory in a way that young people can understand. An $8 million LIGO Exploration Center, which opened in 2022 and was funded by Washington state, further enhances that public-facing mission. Such direct engagement cultivates future STEM talent and inspires the next generation of scientists and engineers. The proposed cuts to LIGO would lead to an irreversible loss of U.S. leadership in gravitational wave astronomy and an immense loss to the Tri-Cities. The Trump administration must reconsider. If it does not, Washington's congressional delegation must convince their colleagues to preserve this cornerstone of American scientific preeminence.

Jan Beutel was half-watching a live stream of Kleines Nesthorn, a mountain peak in the Swiss Alps, when he realized its cacophony of creaks and rumbles was getting louder. He dropped his work, turned up the sound and found himself unable to look away. 'The whole screen exploded,' he said. Beutel, a computer engineer specializing in mountain monitoring, had just witnessed a glacier collapse. On May 28, an avalanche of millions of tons of ice and rock barreled down the slope, burying Blatten, a centuries-old village nestled in the valley below. Local authorities had already evacuated the village after parts of the mountain had crumbled onto the glacier; a 64-year old man believed to have stayed remains missing. But no one expected an event of this magnitude. Successive rock avalanches onto the glacier increased the pressure on the ice, causing it to melt faster and the glacier to accelerate, eventually destabilizing it and pushing it from its bed. The collapse was sudden, violent and catastrophic. 'This one just left no moment to catch a breath,' Beutel said. The underlying causes will take time to unravel. A collapse of this magnitude would have been set in motion by geological factors going back decades at least, said Matthias Huss, a glaciologist at the Swiss university ETH Zürich. But it's 'likely climate change is involved,' he said, as warming temperatures melt the ice that holds mountains together. It's a problem affecting mountains across the planet. People have long been fascinated with mountains for their dramatic beauty. Some make their homes beneath them — around 1 billion live in mountain communities — others are drawn by adventure, the challenge of conquering peaks. These majestic landscapes have always been dangerous, but as the world warms, they are becoming much more unpredictable and much deadlier. 'We do not fully understand the hazard at the moment, nor how the dangers are changing with climate change,' said David Petley, an Earth scientist at the University of Hull in England. Snowy and icy mountains are inherently sensitive to climate change. Very high mountains are etched with fractures filled with ice — called permafrost — which glues them together. As the permafrost thaws, mountains can become destabilized. 'We are seeing more large rock slope collapses in many mountains as a result,' Petley told CNN. Glaciers are also melting at a terrifyingly rapid rate, especially in regions such as the Alps and the Andes, which face the possibility of a glacier-free future. As these rivers of ancient ice disappear, they expose mountain faces, causing more rocks to fall. There have been several big collapses in the Alps in recent years as ice melts and permafrost thaws. In July 2022, about 64,000 tons of water, rock and ice broke off from the Marmolada Glacier in northern Italy after unusually hot weather caused massive melting. The subsequent ice avalanche killed 11 people hiking a popular trail. In 2023, the peak of Fluchthorn, a mountain on the border between Switzerland and Austria, collapsed as permafrost thawed, sending more than 100,000 cubic meters of rock into the valley below. 'This really seems to be something new. There seems to be a trend in such big events in high mountain areas,' Huss said. Melting glaciers can also form lakes, which can become so full that they burst their banks, sending water and debris cascading down mountainsides. In 2023, a permafrost landslide caused a large glacial lake in Sikkim, India, to break its banks, causing a catastrophic deluge that killed at least 55 people. Last year, a glacial lake outburst caused destructive flooding in Juneau, Alaska — a now regular occurrence for the city. After two years in a row of destructive glacial flooding, Juneau is scrambling to erect temporary flood barriers ahead of the next melting season, the Anchorage Daily News reported this week. As well as melting ice, there's another hazard destabilizing mountains: rain. Extreme precipitation is increasingly falling on mountains as rain instead of snow, said Mohammed Ombadi, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. His research shows every 1 degree Celsius of global warming increases extreme rainfall events by 15%. This pushes up the risks of flooding, landslides and soil erosion. Northern Hemisphere mountains will become 'hotspots' for extreme rain, Ombadi said. Heavy rainfall this month in Sikkim, a Himalayan state in northern India, triggered a series of landslides, killing at least three people. Images show deep muddy scars carved into the mountain, with buildings and trees obliterated. Scientists do have tools to monitor mountains and warn communities. 'There are fantastic instruments that can predict quite accurately when a rock mass (or) ice mass is going to come down,' Huss said. The difficulty is knowing where to look when a landscape is constantly changing in unpredictable ways. 'This is what climate change actually does… there are more new and previously unrecognized situations,' Huss said. These are particularly hard to deal with in developing countries, which don't have the resources for extensive monitoring. Scientists say the only way to reduce the impact of the climate crisis on mountains is to bring down global temperatures, but some changes are already locked in. 'Even if we manage to stabilize the climate right now, (glaciers) will continue to retreat significantly,' Huss said. Almost 40% of the world's glaciers are already doomed, according to a new study. 'We could have maybe avoided most of (the negative impacts) if we had acted 50 years ago and brought down CO2 emissions. But we failed,' Huss added. The consequences are hitting as the numbers of people living in and visiting mountains increases. 'We're just more exposed than we used to be,' he said. Ludovic Ravanel, an Alpine climber and geomorphologist who focuses on mountains' response to global warming, has a front line view of the increasing dangers of these landscapes. Mountains are the 'most convincing' hotspots of climate change, he told CNN. When he's focused on the science, he keeps his emotions at arm's length. But as a father, and a mountaineer, it hits him. 'I see just how critical the situation is. And even then, we're only at the very beginning.'
