HBO shoots down claims Harry Potter TV show will be 'most expensive ever made'
The highly anticipated TV adaptation of the Harry Potter series has been reported to be a record-breaker before it even hits screens.
HBO will adapt each of JK Rowling's wizarding tomes into a season of television, as part of a ten-year plan to bring a new generation of viewers to the long-untouched Hogwarts IP.
The budget reported so far would make the HBO show the most expensive ever to be made, trouncing Prime Video's $465 million (£399 million) price tag for Rings of Power.
The Express reported each episode would cost £75 million to make, boosting the UK economy by billions.
However, a source close to the production has now confirmed to Metro that the reported figure is inaccurate.
Instead, the production costs will be on a par with Game of Thrones' budget. The eighth season of the show was its most expensive, costing roughly $15 million (almost £12 million at the time) per episode.
Yet the wizarding adaptation is set to be a high numbers affair regardless, with 30,000 young hopefuls having thrown their name into the sorting hat at the casting director's office, each vying to follow in the footsteps of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.
HBO has now confirmed Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout have been cast as Harry, Hermione and Ron in their first screen acting roles.
The production had already shared a swathe of casting announcements, with John Lithgow set to play headmaster Albus Dumbledore, I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu taking on Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
The benefit to the UK from the next decade of Potterdom is said to be 'probably incalculable', according to Tom Harrington, an analyst at Enders Analysis.
He told The Times: 'It's not just the box office, the merchandise, the tourists or the tours arising from the books, but the resurgence of big UK film and TV production that came in the wake of the Potter films.'
Pictures have already emerged of the £1billion 'mini city' being built for the adaptation at the Warner Bros studio complex in Leavesden.
The vast studio extension reportedly includes a (real) school for its young actors, who will continue their education as they juggle shooting responsibilities with their studies. More Trending
Francesca Gardiner, who's worked on Killing Eve and His Dark Materials, will serve as showrunner after winning out a hugely competitive process, which required writing a pilot script and being interviewed by Rowling for the sign-off.
She'll be joined by directing wizard Mark Mylod, the talent behind Succession and the pivotal attack on Jackson in the second season of The Last of Us.
The first season is set to begin filming this summer and will arrive on screens in 2026.

It's all thanks to an army of loyal subscribers paying £16 every month for content. One of them even has a fetish for pretending to be a bug, and paid Megan £30k over the course of two months for videos of her 'squishing' him. Outside of Only Fans, Megan has released her own range of mushroom supplements, Foreea, and has sponsorship deals with Shein, White Fox and Love Honey that make her £200k. But she has long-term plans, and spent lockdown studying for a diploma in interior design for their multimillion-pound property empire, The Bowen House Limited. The couple now own six properties, including a £128k one-bed in Birmingham and a £175k three-bed, plus two mansions, as well as a plot of land they're developing in Spain. EXCLUSIVE Oar-kward! Emma Watson swaps Rowling for rowing as she lands role coxing her Oxford college team... but gets trounced
As swotty Hermione Granger, she had a reputation as one of the bossiest pupils at Hogwarts. Now that same forceful spirit is helping actress Emma Watson in her new role – coxing her Oxford college rowing eight. Our exclusive pictures captured her yelling instructions at the New College women's third team yesterday. But unfortunately her efforts were in vain, as her crew lost three of their four races across the week. To add insult to injury, rivals from Jesus College celebrated their victory by playing the Harry Potter theme tune – though the actress took their teasing in good spirits. And when her team lost the last race, she remained sportsmanlike when conceding defeat, giving her Somerville College opponents the thumb-ups. Ms Watson has been at Oxford since 2023, when she decided to take a hiatus from acting to take a master's degree in creative writing at Lady Margaret Hall. She has since reportedly progressed to a DPhil – Oxford's version of a PhD – at New College. As cox, the 35-year-old steered her crew along the Isis – as the Thames is called in Oxford – in the university's annual Summer Eights competition. She wore Ray-Ban sunglasses and a white baseball cap, while her crew had donned purple face paint and tied their hair back with purple ribbons, the boat club's colours. Crews start one-and-a-half boat lengths apart, and the aim is to catch up, or 'bump', the team ahead. The actress's team was bumped three out of four times, meaning they narrowly missed out on the humiliation of 'spoons' – the term when a boat is bumped every day. The performance may not have been helped by Ms Watson failing to attend the compulsory cox briefing before the competition began – as sources allege – because she was at the Cannes Film Festival. It was a rare appearance at the event for Ms Watson, whose last film was Little Women in 2019. While at Oxford, Ms Watson is said to be dating Kieran Brown, who just finished his doctorate at the university. They were spotted kissing at a Gail's Bakery in the city last year. Ms Watson, who is also a Prada ambassador and co-founder of the gin brand Renais, has been at loggerheads with Harry Potter creator JK Rowling over the author's views on trans issues. Last week a new Hermione was announced. Arabella Stanton, 11, will take over the role in the much-anticipated Harry Potter TV series for American broadcaster HBO, which is set to be filmed this summer. She previously took the title role of Matiltda on the West End stage.

Sydney Sweeney says she has to ‘prove' herself as an actor and businessperson
Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney has said she has to 'prove' herself as a young woman, actor and businessperson. The actress, 27, rose to fame after starring in the hit HBO series Euphoria, alongside Zendaya and Saltburn's Jacob Elordi, playing the popular and troubled high-school pupil Cassie. Sweeney has since starred in the hit HBO TV show The White Lotus, playing spoiled Olivia Mossbacher in the first series, and stars alongside Julianne Moore in the upcoming thriller Echo Valley. Speaking to the Sunday Times, she said: 'I have to prove myself as a young woman, as an actor, as a businessperson, all of it.' In 2020 she launched her own production company, Fifty-Fifty films, which was behind the hit romantic comedy Anyone But You which she starred in alongside US actor Glen Powell. Speaking about her role in the company, she said: 'I have to be like, I want to be in the room, I want to sit in every single meeting and want to be involved in every decision, I want to be taken seriously as a producer. 'To be honest, actually, I always find that it's the women who give me the hardest time.' She said this happens outside the boardroom and in auditions too. She said: 'I see it all the time where they don't think I am right for (a role) because they watched Cassie in Euphoria. Especially because Cassie was such a sexualised character, that puts a wall up for people. 'I feel like I'm constantly having to be like, no, no, I'm an actor, I'm supposed to be different characters. 'When I see a script or a character I find a little scary and it's going to challenge me and I don't know if I can pull it off, I've got to do it.' She has also starred in the blockbuster Madame Web and the horror mystery Immaculate, in which she plays an American nun whose new home in a convent in Italy proves to be not quite what it seems. Her fame, however, has come at a cost, and she has described the lack of privacy she now has. She added: 'A lot is gone, like privacy. Which is huge. You don't realise how much that means until you lose it. I see all the time, 'Oh, they sold themselves, they knew what they were signing up for'. But 18-year-old me had no idea what she was signing up for.' She also spoke about her long-term relationship with Anyone But You co-producer and ex-fiance Jonathan Davino, 41, adding that she is now single. She said: 'I'm learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I'm loving it.' Sweeney received two Emmy Award nominations in 2022, one for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series for her role as Cassie in Euphoria, and the other for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for her role in The White Lotus.
