
‘The Martial Artist' Review: Tap Out
In the self-absorbed action movie 'The Martial Artist,' the director Shaz Khan stars as rising Pakistani American mixed martial arts fighter Ibby 'The Prince' Bakran, an unconventional pugilist whose bouts are live streamed from remote locales like Death Valley in eastern California.
Impressed by Ibby, the head of a mixed martial arts league (Gregory Sporleder) promises him stardom. But alcohol, women and the killing of Ibby's brother and trainer, Ali (Babar Peerzada), by friends of a former opponent, derail his career.
After four years of boozing and working as a waiter, a frustrated Ibby tries to revitalize his moribund career by venturing home to the lush green mountains of Pakistan to be trained and spiritually healed by his grandfather (Faran Tahir).
It's disappointing that 'The Martial Artist,' an adaptation of Khan's 2016 short film 'Say It Ain't So,' is a shallow film. Characters like Ibby's long-suffering mother (Thesa Loving), his estranged girlfriend (Sanam Saeed) and his deceased brother are nothing more than maudlin plot devices. Though Pakistan is filmed with a sense of grandeur, Ibby's return to his cultural roots is rushed and superficial. Khan's lack of screen presence, toothless mixed martial arts sequences and unintelligible editing further knock the film down.
By the end, when Ibby faces the undefeated Decan Johnson (Philippe Prosper) at the foot of some Mayan pyramids in Belize, we're unsure what or who he is fighting for, or why we should care.

Vintage touches help give a New Hampshire summer home a ‘little cottage in the woods' feel
She quickly realized she wished to honor the home's 'little cottage in the woods' feel. 'I want it to feel familiar, like you've been here before,' McSherry says. 'I also want it to be a place where I can be a more relaxed version of myself.' Antiques (and near-antiques) were crucial to achieving the lived-in look. Any furnishings that aren't vintage are inspired by ones that are. 'To me, old is comforting,' she says. The home also needed to work year-round; the family would be there as often to ski as to swim. McSherry points to the Mulberry wool-plaid fabric she used on the living room sofa as epitomizing the design concept. 'Plaid feels equally at home in a summer house as it does in a winter house,' she says. She loves that the colors are a bit off, too. 'They look dirty, faded, and worn,' McSherry says. 'Those are not bad words; I don't want clean, crisp, and fresh.' Advertisement Guests come and go through the mustard front door, where they step onto a vintage Turkish rug. A midcentury tapestry picturing stylized figures of Mayan and Aztec dancers, which remind the designer of bugs, hangs on the wall straight ahead. As much as she wants things to feel familiar, McSherry also appreciates fun, and the quirky tapestry sets the tone. New stairs to the now-finished basement are painted Benjamin Moore's Patina, a color that McSherry describes as 'dirty salmon.' Not only does the unexpected shade render the stairs a statement, it symbolizes McSherry's vow to push herself to take risks that she never would in her traditional Colonial in Newton. 'I'd tire of this color if I saw it every day, but for a weekend, it's so freaking fun,' she says. The entry is inviting thanks to colorful architectural features and vintage finds such as the 1960s Italian rattan and bamboo pendant light. Jared Kuzia Ditto for the color in the kitchen: Benjamin Moore's Caponata, a dark plum. The upper cabinets and range hood disappear into the wall — Sherwin-Williams's Ivory Lace — while the plum-colored paneled fridge, base cabinets, and furniture-like island are earthy anchors topped with black granite. The hand-painted Tabarka Studio tile backsplash echoes the carefree greenery outdoors. Stools are conspicuously absent from the island, which has glass-front cabinet doors to show off the creamy dishware inside. Not having island seating is a controversial decision, McSherry concedes, but she didn't want to clutter the space, and there's a banquette nearby. Needham woodworking studio Saltwoods made the table based on an antique McSherry loved and the vintage razor blade chairs inject woodsy Danish style. Advertisement Martha's Vineyard artist Avery Schuster Bramhall created the painting in that corner. 'I sent her swatches of the pillow fabrics and tidbits about our family, asking for a still life that speaks to where we are at this time in our life,' McSherry says. 'She incorporated motifs that represent all of us, including the dogs.' In the living area, cheerful still-life paintings hang in a line above the mood-defining plaid sofa. McSherry paired it with a slouchy sofa in a dewy morning blue Fermoie fabric that's printed with large-scale, wispy wildflowers meant to harken back to a great aunt's floral sofa. 'The flowers, butterflies, and weeds are fitting; I'm not tending to the yard here,' McSherry says. McSherry avoided safe colors for the kitchen cabinetry, opting for Benjamin Moore's Caponata. Jared Kuzia Aside from the bunk room downstairs, the home has two bedrooms just past the salmon-colored stairs. The primary bedroom is wrapped in dusty mauve, while raisin-colored beams echo the rich kilim rug underfoot. 'The tone-on-tone-on-tone is enveloping,' McSherry says. 'I never lived with this color before, but I love it.' In the guest room, wallpaper with garnet vines and spiky blooms tops the chocolate brown beadboard wainscoting of the built-in bed, where a vintage Indian throw offers a random hit of glow-y blue. The decor here in New Hampshire, McSherry says, explores her alter ego: the loose, chill side of herself that doesn't need things to match. It also represents who she hopes to become. 'I want to be the cool older lady who wears a caftan, chunky jewelry, and red glasses,' she says. 'This house shows how I can do that.' 'We want WrestleMania to come to London': Mayor makes pitch to WWE legend Triple H
London Mayor Sadiq Khan made a pitch to World Wrestling Entertainment legend Paul "Triple H" Levesque to bring the wrestling promotion's biggest event, Wrestlemania, to the U.K. capital. "I'd love for WrestleMania to come to London," Khan told CNBC's Tania Bryer. "Triple H if you're watching, we want WrestleMania to come to London." Speculation has been rife about London as a destination since 2023 when wrestling legend John Cena made a surprise appearance at a show in the city and gave backing to the idea of bringing WrestleMania to the British capital. If the event, dubbed the "Super Bowl of Wrestling," were to come to the U.K.'s capital city, it would be the first time the event is hosted outside of North America. Levesque, whose ring name is Triple H, is now chief content officer of the WWE. Khan held talks with Levesque in July last year, adding to the speculation. He then made a further pitch for London during the CNBC interview. "If WrestleMania came to London, my message to the team there is that we wouldn't just have a great weekend, we'd have a festival, of you know, legends in WrestleMania coming to London, current stars, but also future stars as a well," Khan said. "It will open a completely new market for them as well." WrestleMania 41, the biggest show in the WWE calendar, was held in Las Vegas this year. The two-day event takes place over a weekend with shows such as "Smackdown" and "Raw" usually taking place around the time of the main event. Khan described London as the "sporting capital of the world," touting events such as the tennis at Wimbledon and even American football matches as evidence of its sporting achievements. WWE, which is owned by TKO Group, has looked to expand the appeal and audience of the wrestling brand. WWE's Monday night weekly show "Raw" began streaming on Netflix this year. Khan said London could provide WWE the chance to expand further. "I think the potential has not been reached in terms of WrestleMania. We are the sporting capital in my view, of the world. And if WrestleMania wants to expand, the obvious place to come is London," Khan said.

Tony Khan Reacts To WWE Frequently Counterprogramming AEW Events
Tony Khan assesses the competition. Last weekend, AEW and WWE went head-to-head, with Double or Nothing and NXT Battleground both airing on Sunday evening in the United States. This wasn't the first time the two companies have gone directly against each other, as AEW Collision has occasionally competed against WWE premium live events, and AEW Dynamite famously battled NXT in the Wednesday Night Wars. Advertisement At the Double or Nothing post-show media scrum, AEW CEO Tony Khan addressed this trend, likening it to another popular wrestling franchise. 'It's pretty consistent. I'd say it's the most consistent event head-to-head scheduling since Jim Crockett Promotions,' Khan said. 'Saw a lot of scheduling that went that way, and I can tell you that this will go a lot differently than that did.' Before its sale to the Turner Broadcasting System in 1988, Jim Crockett Promotions stood as a popular wrestling organization, with successful pay-per-view events. Under the Vince McMahon Jr. regime, however, JCP saw their shows frequently countered by WWE, with a notable example being the annual WWE Survivor Series event, which directly opposed Starrcade in 1987. Given Khan's statement, it seems AEW is confident that they will not suffer the same fate as JCP.
