Britain plans at least six new weapons factories in defense review
MANCHESTER, England: Britain will build at least six new factories producing weapons and explosives as part of a major review of its defense capabilities, the government said on Saturday.
The 1.5 billion-pound ($2.0 billion) investment will be included in the Strategic Defense Review, a 10-year plan for military equipment and services. The SDR is expected to be published on Monday.
The Ministry of Defense added that it planned to procure up to 7,000 long-range weapons built in Britain. Together, the measures announced on Saturday will create around 1,800 jobs, the MoD said.
'The hard-fought lessons from (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine show a military is only as strong as the industry that stands behind them,' Defense Secretary John Healey said in a statement.
'We are strengthening the UK's industrial base to better deter our adversaries and make the UK secure at home and strong abroad.'
The extra investment will mean Britain will spend around 6 billion pounds on munitions in the current parliament, the MoD said.
Earlier on Saturday, the MoD said it would spend an extra 1.5 billion pounds to tackle the poor state of housing for the country's armed forces.

Israel army says shelling Syria after projectiles launched
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said it was shelling targets in Syria on Tuesday in response to a pair of projectile launches, with Defense Minister Israel Katz saying he held Syria's leader 'directly responsible.' A military statement said that 'two projectiles were identified crossing from Syria into Israeli territory, and fell in open areas,' adding in a subsequent statement that its 'artillery struck in southern Syria' following the launches. Syria's official news agency SANA reported shelling 'targeting the Yarmuk Basin, in the west of Daraa' province. Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said bombardments had hit farmland in the province, without reporting casualties. 'Violent explosions shook southern Syria, notably the town of Quneitra and the Daraa region, following Israeli aerial strikes' overnight Tuesday to Wednesday, the monitor said in a statement. Israel said it had targeted weapons belonging to Syrian authorities following the launch of the projectiles. There were no reports of casualties or damage on the Israeli side due to the projectiles, which the military said triggered air raid sirens in parts of the southern Golan Heights, a territory Israel conquered from Syria in 1967 and annexed in 1981. Katz, the Israeli defense minister, said in a statement released by his office that 'we view the president of Syria as directly responsible for any threat or fire directed at the State of Israel.' 'A full response will follow shortly,' he added. Syria's interim president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, led the Islamist group that spearheaded the offensive that toppled longtime ruler Bashar Assad in December. Israeli media said Tuesday's projectiles were the first fired from Syria into Israeli territory since Assad's fall. Following his overthrow, Israel moved its forces into the UN-patrolled demilitarised zone in the Golan Heights, and has carried out hundreds of strikes against military targets in Syria. Israel says the strikes aim to stop advanced weapons reaching Syria's new authorities, whom it considers jihadists. In a statement on Sunday, Israel's military said its troops were continuing 'defensive operations in southern Syria' to 'dismantle terrorist infrastructure and protect the residents of the Golan Heights.' Syria and Israel have technically been at war since 1948.

Spain into last four of Women's Nations League after 2-1 win over England
BARCELONA: Spain's Claudia Pina came off the bench and scored twice as the reigning Nations League champions came back from a goal down to beat England 2-1 on Tuesday and claim victory in Group 3, booking their spot in the last four of this year's competition. With Germany and France having already secured victory in Groups 1 and 2 respectively and Euro 2025 only a month away, world champions Spain and European champions England met to decide their group in an intriguing clash of styles. Vast majority of Brits want full arms embargo on Israel: Poll
LONDON: Around 80 percent of the British public support a full arms embargo on Israel, and just 16 percent oppose expelling the country from the UN, according to a poll conducted by Opinium. Around three-quarters of respondents want public sector pensions to disengage from investments linked to Israel. The findings come in the aftermath of Co-op members voting at their annual general meeting last week for the supermarket to stop selling Israeli products. Two-thirds of those surveyed by Opinium back similar boycotts by other UK supermarkets. Ben Jamal, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said in a statement: 'The polling … speaks to Israel's growing isolation and the significant public support for sanctions. 'By continuing to arm and support Israel even as it enacts a genocide and a policy of forced starvation, the British government is holding on to an increasingly fringe position, completely out of sync with public opinion, and with the views of those who supported it at the last election.' On Wednesday, thousands of activists are set to form a kilometer-long cordon around the Houses of Parliament in London, linked by a stretch of red fabric, to call for an end to UK military aid to Israel and the imposition of sanctions on the country. Jamal said: 'Those bringing the demand for an arms embargo to Parliament … in a symbolic red line are doing so knowing that the demand is supported by the majority of their fellow citizens.' The PSC said in a press release: 'For nearly 3 months Israel imposed a total blockade preventing all humanitarian assistance, resulting in deaths by starvation, widespread malnutrition and hunger amongst 2.3 million people. 'Israel has now imposed a severely limited and militarised aid operation, condemned by international aid organisations, that has resulted in scores of Palestinians being shot dead as they search for food.'
